4 strings sound better than 5 string basses. Discuss.
escholl replied to EBS_freak's topic in General Discussion
probably no difference. but i voted 4 cause, you know, they're better. -
I visited the Vestax link and as soon as they mentioned 'DJ' my perception of Watts turned from RMS to PMPO. I could be over cynical though
The first thing that came to mind for me was that it was probably 500 watts at 10% THD (which would sound awful). This is how most cheap "1000 watt home cinema surround" etc. systems are rated. But, it's not quite as bad as all that, as down at the bottom they have the specs listed as: Power continuous, both channels driven 4 ohm= 2~ 390W(1KHz, 0.5% THD) 8 ohm= 2~ 240W(1KHz, 1% THD) The EIA power is listed as 500W; EIA is measured at 1%THD and a little bit differently. Either way, I probably wouldn't go for it, tbh.

the happiest of new years to you all

I don't think I'm very good, or at least I'm nothing special. But the drummer and guitarist keep telling me otherwise, as do seemingly everyone else -- they must be deaf

Replacing a dodgy jack on an aphex bass xciter?
escholl replied to gafbass02's topic in Repairs and Technical
Cheers dude, I can't do anything technical but I'm hoping father in law can fix it. Anyone got a link to a suitable socket and switch? I reckon it is the socket as there is a gold springy flat bit of metal on the top that sticks up too far compared to the other ones, making the contact with the end of the jack dodgy.
you may be able to bend the bit of metal back in the socket that has bent away, if that makes sense. Otherwise something like this for the switch and for the socket, just browse rapid electronic's site until you find something that looks like it will fit, or maplin might have something as well but their component selection seems to dwindle as time goes on. -
I don't know if anyone has suggested Bassmasta, but I've actually gotten some really good tabs from there. Well, good enough, anyways.

Replacing a dodgy jack on an aphex bass xciter?
escholl replied to gafbass02's topic in Repairs and Technical
i've replaced the switch on one of these before, and i took pics when i did it, so if you want me to post them and how i did it, just let me know. the jack shouldn't need replacing, but the solder joints may have come loose and need re-doing. It looks complex, I know, but in all honesty the circuit is pretty simple -
I've been a member for longer than I've been here, but only by a few weeks and I don't think I've logged on once since I joined here. I'm not even sure I ever posted anything. Even though I'm American like most of the people on there (although I reside in the UK), there are several to many varied reasons why I don't really care for it and find Basschat to be, well, much better. So, I'm technically a member, but really only so I can log in if I want to for whatever reason.
Hi again, I love them both, the possibilities of adding little runs are endless! If I get a chance tomorrow I will PM you, there are a few notes in the tab that sound a half step out, but I can't be sure until I get a proper chance to listen again. As you rightly said, angling the neck up a bit does make a big difference, I managed to squeeze in a few more hours tonight, great fun, man I love playing fine tunage!!!!
Awesome, I'm glad to hear that new neck position worked out for you If you manage to figure out what notes are off I'd really appreciate it, haven't yet found a guitarist who'll play along with me, but when I do I don't want to be out of key haha ^_^ Such a great song for the bass though, and in general really -- one of my all time favorites. I haven't played it in aggggeeesss though -- and I never added any extra runs, I was too rubbish (probably still am! )

--------5-----------------16-------------------- -------------17--5--X--------------------------- -7--------4-------------5-----14---------------- ---5-3--------------------15-------X------5--3- -----------------------------------------3------- I won't be able to play this, as I've only got 4 strings I could always drop D, I suppose.
Just played it and lost the ability to use my left hand for a few days
See, this is why I have a "no bass soloing" policy.....

Haha maybe, I never played much by way of the chorus....the verse is much more fun to play. if you don't mind, which bits aren't right?

This is the one I used to play, always sounded right to me.
You will severely limit your options if you choose to go forward and play a left handed bass – there is simply not the demand for them – I think I’ve seen one lefty bass in a shop.
I was going to say this as well, don't go left-handed unless there really is no other alternative -- plus the fact that you'd have to re-learn everything you've done in the past weeks -- which is probably not the hugest deal, but the limiting your options bit you may regret later, if only for the fact that you won't really be able to play anyone else's bass at your next local bassbash In regards to the medical aspect -- I understand, I won't go into detail, but trust me I can understand where you're coming from. Someone else mentioned a chiropractor, would you consider something like that, or some alternative treatment, an option? Anyways, the real reason I posted is because I think I might be able to help -- a few people have mentioned playing height, and playing hand-position, and I think that may help you out a lot. When I play, my wrist is usually almost straight and it's just my hand which is bent, unless I'm playing on the E string, in which case it's often bent only slightly. You can see it here where I'm playing. I'm sure I've got my bass a bit too high to be a rock god, but I'm not exactly Mark King either -- yea, anyways, I thought that might help, as it reduces the bending-your-wrist bit, doesn't involve you changing your bass or buying a new one, and avoids the doctors. It may take a while to get used to, and you might not exactly have the muscles for it yet, but as long as it's only the muscles which are sore and there's no agony, then you'll be ok -- building up the muscles takes forever, but you'll get there. Of course, I could just be completely spouting nonsense, in which case I'm sure someone point it out.
yep, def should! Would of been pretty cool to get a decent length piece and then hear other peoples interpretations of it when recorded! -Jake
Yea, I would have liked that.... Should we correct it to keep it in key and keep going?
-
--------5----------------- -------------17--5--X--- -7--------4-------------5 ---5-3------------------- I think when we get to a certain point, we should all post up our recorded interpretation of it....

ooo sleek and shiny, I like it. nice one
Balanced cable is usually screened with foil or braid and has a twisted pair of inner cables. The idea is that any interference picked up on one wire is picked up equally on the other. The balanced input stage on the preamp rejects any noise that's common to both cores. Stereo cable ideally has a separate screen round each wire, so the two signals are kept separate. You can of course use a TRS jack for either.
Oh right, duh haha....i knew that Wasn't thinking of the cable itself, was just thinking of what the difference would be in that situation. Probably should have thought about it a little harder.

I feel quite lucky, in that our guitarist is actually pretty good, both as a guitarist and a person. Doesn't understand any theory, but I can forgive him for that, and he doesn't seem to suffer from CPC...thankfully. But for some reason, he tends to play every single note or chord with the same exact intensity; that is to say completely flat without any variations in dynamics or rhythm or anything. I suppose dynamics might be tough to control with so much distortion, but really the end result is that it sounds like a poorly-programmed MIDI track. I tried explaining this to him once, but, you know...blank look He also doesn't seem to be aware of the fact that some of the fancier stuff he tries just gets completely lost in a wall of distorted noise.
Then, you should look at all the cables you use and have OBBM make you new ones. You'll sound better and they'll last longer, they'll also be cheaper than any other decent cable you can buy.
so, he can't afford to buy one new cable, and your solution is that he buys all new cables?
Neat idea but do you mean a stereo cable or a balanced cable? They are different.
In what way? TRS is TRS, it's all wired the same way...unless I'm missing something?

epic win. so glad you've finally got it, that's a sexy collection you've got there now
