yea, i would take it back to where you bought it, if you can -- most UK companies, even web retailers, are pretty good about dealing with faulty products, that that sounds faulty to me, even for behringer.

If you do get the V3, I'd be really interested to know if the "preamp voicing" bit is any good...think this may call for a BC review

My housemate has the third one, the one going for 33 pounds, and I've been really impressed by it -- I know someone else who has one as well, and loves his. They're pretty tough, and all metal on the outside, and they sound great. Never figured out why they were so cheap, guess they're just simple....probably just due to their not using high voltage. Really though, you can't really go wrong for the price, if it was me, I'd probably go for the v3 model....or the cheap one.
I just think Ashdown have lost the qualities and goodwill they had early on.
Agreed. I'm often disappointed by them as well, not in their ideas but in their execution of them. Some great ideas wasted by carelessness. Here's to hoping ashdown will wake up to that before it's too late.
Everyone has their own brand bias - justifiable or not. Isn't that what discussion forums are for?
Sure, and if someone's had an issue in the past they'd like to share, then by all means, i think they should, it helps the whole community. But bashing a product that clearly isn't even finalized yet, just because a company has made some products in the past that someone didn't like?
...what about a horrible high-pitched whistle? What did they do when that problem came to light? Recall them? Nah... sold 'em off on the cheap. Classy.
I'm hardly trying to say ashdown are the best company ever; i wasn't aware of that but that's completely unethical - if in fact that is the whole story. But sometimes it seems it's become cool to hate ashdown, to the point where that attitude starts to eclipse what's important - which is how the products perform. If performance is crap, then by all means, trash them for it -- but if not, at least give them credit where it's due.
that really wasn't the point being made. it did go into reliability but would you spend a load of dosh on what is essentially an average amps preamp that isn't a valve preamp patched onto an all valve power section? basically ashdown have turned into hashdown with their latest efforts. they're getting the naff stigma that trace elliot once had. ashdown realyl should of just started afresh with this all valve head. 10 years of rumors of one and it's a lazy effort. ashdown are a joke now. far too many products. 4 different 8x10's! they simply need a neo range, an ABM range and a MAG range for cabs. heads wise, ABM, MAG and the Valve and klystron stuff should simply be called classic with all valve pre's and SS power on the 1000 and 500 watters.
How it sounds defines it's worth -- if now one buys it, I'm sure the price will change -- but it's whatever the market will bear. If people will buy them at that price, then who's to blame? And what, only valve preamps can sound good now? As for starting afresh with this amp, well, it's not that easy. Good preamps can take years to design, and once a company gets one down they usually just tweak it as the years go by -- why NOT use the ABM preamp, which a lot of people already love, instead of risking a new design that might not go down so well? Besides, the rest of it, from the tube output stage to the power supply, was undoubtedly redesigned anyways. And what does it matter how many product lines they have?

This isn't raised at anyone in particular, just in general: Why do some people have such an issue with ashdown? Every company has had reliability problems here and there, ashdown is far from the first. In fact, i seem to remember certain black and yellow amps a few years back which had hideous reliability issues at the start, some of which have even been known to catch fire. Ashdown have had a few radical designs, sure -- the superfly was probably not the best technical execution of an idea in recent years -- but if you don't like it, because you don't have a use for outputs that can't be bridged, or whatever other issue you have with it, then don't f**king buy it. Whatever the trendy amp of the month is this month, I can guarantee you that it only got that way because it's makers took a chance on something new; weight reduction, design, whatever -- and luckily, it paid off. I've got a PRC made, fanless, ashdown amp that i thrashed time and time again for a year and half without so much as a hiccup or complaint from it. it's brilliant. obviously YMMV, etc, but it's hardly a "joke". "Try before you buy" seems to be the advice given around here all the time, except, of course, when it comes to speculation on ashdown products, and their subsequent bashing by.....err...oh so "knowledgeable" people.

there seems to be this black art mystique surrounding valves, and tbh it just sort of makes me laugh...as mentioned previously, valves have been used in tanks, aircraft, etc. Just because they're made of glass doesn't make them fragile, yes there's a heater element however it's not like a lightbulb where the filament is loose, valve filaments are pretty rigidly fixed in place. The technology behind them is so simple, and so proven, that it's very unlikely for the average valve circuit to have reliability issues. In terms of reliability, I'd much rather have a valve head than any head with an SMPS in it. What kills a valve? Well, in this case, probably just one valve that had a QC issue from the start, and took some others out with it.
Do you know, back in the day (back when you could buy these new) I absolutely DETESTED the looks of H&H... And yet here today, what 25/30 years later, and they look VERY tasty and more classic than I could have ever imagined. Thats a great looking rig you have there buddy!

Yeah the H&H looks brilliant! Is it heavy?
haha yes, it's one downfall is weight. The upside of that is, the cabs are absolutely indestructible; and to me, [s]the sound and the look justify[/s] the sound alone justifies it all at least it's not an 8x10 haha!
100% old skool. BTW: love the HH rig - used to use a bass machine head, fantastic !!!!
haha thanks dude, loving your rig as well, doesn't get much more classic, or rock, than that ampeg/fender combo

Aria TD1 Platinum Drive Tube Distortion Pedal - BUZZING
escholl replied to ben_eat_pie's topic in Repairs and Technical
it could be that a ground connection has come loose somewhere, or it could be that the tube(s) need replacing, or it could be something completely different. i had a humming noise in my blackfinger that was steadily getting worse, and it turned out that one of the op-amps was dying....unfortunately humming/buzzing noises can be caused by almost anything. take a look inside, if it's not anything obvious (like a wire that's come loose or something) then replace the tube, since you're intending to anyways....and if that doesn't work...err...let us know? -
I watched a program about how they make cathode ray tubes (I know how sad I am) I was suprised how much work and technical know how goes into making them. Sorry little bit OT.
what's even sadder is that I wish I'd seen that too....

i think that looks pretty good too, i've kinda been hoping Ashdown would do something like that. My guess is that it will be "available" to buy in the next 6 months or so, but won't be actually in stock anywhere till about 2011 still, would love to try it when they do come out, it's exactly the sort of thing i go for...

Is 'Headless' about to come back into fashion?
How about this then?
I'm not normally a fan of headless basses, but that i could definitely go for. well done to you -
I find that they are excellent strings from my experience, but the high F on my 7 string ALWAYS snaps before reaching tension :/ I have a Roto F on at the moment because I know it doesn't snap... Overwater are next on my list to try for 7 string sets. But yes, excellent service at any rate
If they snap before even reaching tension, surely that's a fault with the product? Have you tried talking to them about it? Not the same company, i know, but i had/have a set of status strings (which are also brilliant) on which the G string snapped before reaching tension; i emailed them and they sent me a new one free of charge (which has, fingers crossed, now lasted for months - still sounding great too). I'd imagine Newtone would probably have a similar customer support philosophy?
Yeah but you can say that about anything, I prefer to have qualified people build my s&*t so I can just play it and not have to spend a week wondering why something isn't working
you've obviously never been an engineer!
-
triode/pentode combination tube? gee, i'm sure there's loads of replacement options there. sometimes i think manufacturers try to be too clever. there's no real reason why they couldn't use two separate tubes, say, an ef86 and a 12a series.
That looks stunning and I bet it sounds just as good. I love Bass Machines, cool name, cool designs.
Thanks, good to see someone else appreciating it It sounds fantastic, SO much power, taken a bit of effort to restore it but definitely worth it. HH seem to have gotten a bit of a bad name in the past years, and i'm not really sure why; great sound and huge reliability, mine had been running for 27 years before i got it, and was still going strong despite several several important parts failing -- which i only discovered when i opened the amp. Can't ask for more than that, an amplifier that doesn't break down even when it does. British engineering win.
because its compeltly transparant, noiseless, and perfectly effective limiter for what i need...the boss limiter colours the sound more than this, to my ears the behringer doesnt change tone whatsoever
if you say so. i've never used it, so was just wondering.
-
By doubling the impedance on one side of the output transformer (in going from 4 to 8 ohms) you will also double the impedance on the side the valves see...all of which means that LESS current will actually flow through them, not more. The power transfer characteristics will not be ideal and you may end up with more power reflected back internally, but honestly, it'll be fine in these circumstances. Also, don't play with the biasing. Just gives you a reason to buy another cab!
complete for now i think although an octaver would give me the phattest synth tone everrrrrr.....
why behringer?
