So many to choose from but if pushed it'd be Mountains off the Parade album..
-
Ta again - I look forward to watching the live stuff.. As an aside, the opening to the track Skate U is reminiscent of Jeff Beck's Cause We've Ended as Lovers off his Blow by Blow album, which is an album you might enjoy?
Their last strict studio album was 8 years ago, so everything since 2008 is a CD/DVD combo! The DVD's are GREAT watching lots of good angles to see how each player plays, what gear they use etc.
Ta. Really fallen into the Tell Your Friends album (not watched the DVD yet). The music's right up my street, and the band are fabulous, but wow, Michael League is such a tasty player - groove and melody in abundance, and the way he plays with/leaves so much space is just great..
That Snarky song is called 'Flood' it's from the album Tell Your Friends
Cheers! Purchased from Amazon (and it's a CD/DVD to boot..)

Thanks for Fela Kuti/Afro Beat/Snarky Puppy recommendations - lots to check out. I found a Snarky Puppy Dunlop Sessions gig on YouTube that I love but can't find anything similar on record - anyone point me in the right direction? Wow! Some great introductions to artists/players for me in this thread that I've never really dug out before - Snarky Puppy/Michael League and Fela Kuti. I'm finding my way a bit with Snarky Puppy (some of the random live bits on YouTube are drawing me in more than the studio stuff at the minute) but Fela Kuti is just great. I had in my mind something completely different previously but the stuff referenced on this thread is lovely. Still keep watching the original video, mind..! I can hear little bits of mid-period Talking Heads in there as well.. Great stuff..

Really like that a lot. Can't stop watching it. Is it at all similar to Snarky Puppy? And (even if it's not similar) where would one start as an introduction to Snarky Puppy?

I can't recommend the Micro Cube highly enough - a cracking little amp, great for practicing and loud enough to annoy the neighbours, if you ever wanted to! The effects are all top drawer and the amp simulators are really impressive. The drum machine is good for jamming along to and you can even tune your bass, if you're that way inclined.

Seven female bassists who helped shape modern music.
It's just one person's opinion, I don't think the article is trying to be a definitive summation of the state of the art !
That's alright then, I'll calm myself down! (*Mumbles to himself*... "still don't know why Sara Lee wasn't mentioned... bloody lists for this and that and the other etc etc and no Sara Lee...") -
Great choices
Ta. Two of my favourites - tend to get overlooked but both right up there for me (and let's be honest how can Luther Vandross be anything but great?!)..
Is that played with a pick?...admire anyone who can play that fast with a pick..fingers no probs.
Always assumed it was fingers? I'd find both styles hard to play if I'm being honest. It's a killer line.. Anyway, another from the mighty Hamilton Bohannon - and if shouting "key change" in the manner of Mel Brooks is your thing then this record's for you.. Out of control 'Lead' Guitarists vs Out of control Saxophonists

Definitely the "sax-a-ma-phone".. -
Whilst not working for or affiliated to any brewery I do have a bit of insight into the licensed trade through my work and it's an incredibly tough time out there at the moment (and has been for a number of years). It's worth bearing in mind that any landlord/venue committed to putting on live music these days probably does so in battle with an area manager being challenged on profit and loss by the brewery head office (who in turn will be being challenged on profit and loss). A number of the larger UK breweries see live music as "old hat" (unless it's an iconic venue or it's catering for a 'trendy'/student audience) and believe there are better ways to get punters through the doors and deliver a better return on profits - Sports TV being a big driver (even with the insanely high costs set by Sky) along with a focus on food sales (whether cheap food deals or what's on the menus etc.) - the return on food sales is hugely higher than those against drinks (and let's not forget the majority of breweries tie the venues into a deal where they supply the drinks at significantly higher cost than could be sourced elsewhere). Even if a landlord has any say as to what actually goes on at their venue they will be looking for anything that is hassle-free and returns the best/biggest profit. As I say, it's tough out there so spare a thought for those that are still trying to keep music live. The above said, there is no excuse for poor/late communication and if I were the OP I'd be feeding back to the venue advising on the consequences (to the band) of being told so late in the day and ensuring the venue is made aware of other means of contact moving forward... whilst looking to book their next gig(s), obviously..
The best intro to introduce the band by a mile, by my namesake https://youtu.be/hcrUuCDFLOQ
Love it, not seen that before!

Seven female bassists who helped shape modern music.
This. Music journalism aimed at musicians is awful for excluding women. And that needs to change. One magazine that is doing amazing things is She Shreds. Check them out over here: http://sheshredsmag.com/
It's a fair point but it's hugely inhibiting (and widely open to debate) when it's referenced as 'shaping' music. If they're trying to promote positive reaction to female players then surely reference players who have 'inspired' - with a little artistic licence you could legitimately name any/every female who has ever been near a bass guitar and say that someone has been influenced by them. So, Annie Holland from Elastica would get a mention, ditto Tessa Pollitt from The Slits and Este Haim from Haim and Tracy Wormworth, along with Gail Anne Dorsey and Gaye Advert (both mentioned above) and countless others. And if they are going to reference someone shaping modern music (which is an incredibly difficult thing to quantify) then why leave out Sara Lee and her work with Gang of Four; a band that hugely influenced Flea and RHCP as just one example? -
Something New for the Tedeschi Trucks Band Fans
Old Man Riva replied to Mykesbass's topic in General Discussion
And lurking at the back is my new favourite bassist Tim Lefebvre.. Derek Trucks is such a fabulous player. There's a clip on YouTube of him playing with the Allman Brothers (Dreams) that is just stunning.. such a great/natural feel for the guitar. -
I think football should be banned from pubs tbh. It's hard to hear yourself think. Even when games are over , the shouting carries on. Even the lunchtime games are shouty affairs . When I was gigging , we often used to avoid playing on a footie night . We knew of the irritations that are caused.
Not much (any) chance of that happening, with the pub trade struggling as it is. If anything you'll see more sport on TV in pubs (along with associated/targeted advertising - betting etc..) as it gets people through the door and spending at the bar esp. for England games, tournaments and the dreaded Premier League.

Many mixes (and re-recordings) of this out there but this one really shows that killer bass line.. Flares are compulsory! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mls04iVmU9o&list=RDmls04iVmU9o

Not necessarily the greatest technically but they can convey emotion, tell a story and sound utterly believable.. So Joni Mitchell singing Hejira, Roberta Flack singing The First Time Ever I Saw Your face, Karen Carpenter singing Goodbye to Love, Dusty Springfield singing Goin' Back, Aretha Franklin singing Until You Come Back to Me... Jeff Buckley singing Last Goodbye, Curtis Mayfield singing Now You're Gone, Steve Marriott singing The Autumn Stone... If I could sing like anyone, though, it'd be Rod... Rod the Mod taking on Man of Constant Sorrow https://www.youtube....h?v=nvfItj_qzNg
Goodbye to Love, The Carpenters (the verses), then back in the world with that soaring guitar break at the play out.
The opening line is enough..

Always have a lot of time/admiration for those who play in the house bands we see on TV - e.g. Dave Swift on Later, Will Lee on Letterman, the bassist on BBC's The Voice (not sure who it is?).. etc. A huge array of styles/songs covered expertly due to their versatility.. JPJ was phenomenal in the 60s but for me the modern player who shows the most versatility would be Pino - the list of acts he's played with (see post above) is so diverse and I can't think of another bassist who could match that level of diversity. Edited to give an honourable mention to Chris Chaney - another hugely versatile player..

Life on Mars - Bowie The Downtown Lights - The Blue Nile Flamenco Sketches - Miles Davis Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye - Roberta Flack That said, the older I get I find I blub at pretty much anything..
