Is there any way we could collate all the entries so far at the top of the page like on the voting pages? Just add new ones as they are submitted? I only ask as I've just had a listen to all the pieces submitted thus far and its a bit difficult tracking which track belongs to which person, what with links being requoted etc. This is probably loads of work for someone though I'm guessing? Had a listen to everything so far and as per last month I'm very impressed with the quality. I'm always in awe of people prepared to put vocals on their compositions, it really takes something to bare your singing voice for the world to hear. I've enjoyed elements of all the pieces but I especially likes Steve's submission. Not just because I like to get involved in a bit of solo bass myself, but also because I really enjoyed the melodies in the solo. I felt the whole thing held together really well and managed to sound like a tune and not an endless stream of unrelated phrases as a solo sometimes can. I'm a bit of a defender of solo bass compositions and its music like this that makes it a much easier medium to champion. Rob
Wow, thanks for the positive comments Rob, really appreciate it. I agree about getting the list of entries up as they appear, could we perhaps set up the voting thread early, but with the voting option disable in some way until the appropriate time?
I really like the idea of joining in...but I'm a bit rubbish. Might do it anyway.
you should go for it, the worst that could happen is you'll get some constructive criticism, which is also the best that could happen, hang on, I've confused myself now
Ok, but shouldn't that D chord sound terrible in theory? Being played on a keyboard F# A D btw (it's all based on chord triads).
All the theory is telling us is whether it conforms to the tonality of Fmajor, you ear tells you it sounds good (or not, but in this case IMHO it sounds very nice). If it was a D minor chord, played in that inversion, you would have an F natural, but substituing the F# gives voice leading in the chord roots of F, F# (in D maj triad) to G assuming the other chords are in root position.
If someone can tell my why it works I'd appreciate it
In the context of F major, Gm Cm F D can be thought of as II-v-I-VI first three chords are close a ii-V-I progression (change Cm to C7 by raising the Eb to E natural and addind a flat 7th (Bb)), and changing the Dmaj to Dm would give you the vi chord in Fmajor, so what you have is a modified vi-ii-V-I turnaround (a common progression), which (I assume) your cycling round, but starting on the ii.

you could always pick up some hide glue and a couple of clamps and have a go yourself?
Lovely feel and tone to the piece Steve I like it

Thats a lovely piece Steve , well in , Mine is nearly done , I have recorded a vocal but I am really hoping to get our bands singer to do it so that I can ditch mine , If its a possibility I will hang fire , but if not, I will put mine up.
Thanks very much, kind of you to say so btw I'm not being ignorant regarding other peoples tunes, I prefer to wait until voting starts and then listen to all of them in one sitting

I've managed to get something done this month. It's an instrumental as I thought I'd spare your ears on this occasion All tracks were recorded on my ACG sixer, and except for the pad tracks at the beginning, are all clean, with reverb and a bit of eq'ing done in the mixing stage. This may not be the final version, as I would like to rerecord some parts if opportunity arises, but here it is anyway http://soundcloud.com/stevemcevoy/the-andean-incident
160EUR for 7 strings: Wound E, wound A, plain A, plain D and three gauges of plain G - all the strings they do, basically. I imagine if you were more selective you could get a set cheaper, but I didn't know what to expect. I honestly think they would sound a lot better on a brighter bass. The laminate I put them on is very ****ing loud and not at all cultured, it's full of bottom end and I've played it with other basses in the same ensemble and it woofs them all out of existence. I'm hoping to get the post adjusted and calm it down a bit but seriously I've never heard another bass voiced so deep or as loud acoustically. I reckon on a more balanced bass they would sound a lot better.
hmm, I think i'll send the maker an email - if I do get a set and don't like them, I suppose I'll be able to move them on without taking too much of a hit
I just gave them a little go, just for you, but I am terrible with the bow. I think they'll want plenty of rosin - the E and A particularly didn't want to pick up at first but they got going in the end. I know what you mean about the slaps, the G just sounds hilarious in the higher positions it sounds like a kazoo, but the Lambert G is definitely much better, it can sound good all the way up so long as you adjust the position of the bow towards the bridge. It seems they work best with a light touch but that might be my fault. The strings have a coarse surface so they can sound a bit scratchy, and I found I got that effect when I used more pressure. So like I said I'm no expert but they are definitely much better than the Slaps for bowing. I think with enough talent they could sound really good, but they take more discipline than the smooth steels and steel-wound hybrids I'm used to, and I definitely ran out of talent.
Thanks for responding so quickly and comprehesively, my interest is piqued to say the least, how much did the set cost?
-
Have you had chance to try them with a bow at all? I'm using golden slaps, which I'm happy with for pizz and slap, but arco sounds too nasal.
PS: Off topic, but this seems like a good place to let y'all know that the programme for this year's Manchester Jazz Festival was announced yesterday: http://www.mancheste...programme-2013/ If anyone's coming up for it then let me know. I'll be mooching around as much as I can...
fantastic, I've been waiting for the programme to be released, I'll be heading down to as much of this as I can get to too
+1 In any case you won't cook the amp by using speakers rated at a lower handling power. But you may damage the cabs... it's a case of using your discretion, your ears and that volume control thing. You won't be running the amp at full tilt. If I had a PF500 I too would opt for the Portaflex cabs, they're lighter than a 410HLF and have 'that' sound by all accounts.
I did, and they do to my ears
