2.
I gave up classical piano years ago. Actually... joking aside and remembering I'm new to bass, I've seen Bach mentioned a few times for bassists. Why is this?
there are quite a few solo pieces that are suited to the range of a bass, there's a site mentioned in this forum quite recently where you can download the notation in dots form, so you get to practice your reading while you learn some interesting tunes. Melbay also does a couple of books with bach transcriptions with added tab

+1 on the white one - I think white basses with black hardware look fantastic
  4.
Wow a flame tail. That figuring change is really something Dave.
+1, and the darker bit will make it look like the bridge is melting!
  5.
I highly recommend using floating thumb regardless of the number of strings on your bass. That way if/when you switch to a 5/6+ there's less transitionary practice needed, you can play someone else's etc. Other advantages are it's easier to shift up/down strings, easier to shift along the string length (no need to unanchor each time you want to move), reduces tension in the right hand as you don't have to anchor, makes you play with a lighter touch, can help you to keep a more natural hand position, etc. Disadvantages: some feel less 'contacted'/'connected' with their instrument, some feel they can't dig in as much, some feel it's less secure, etc. Basically it's great for relaxation and ease of movement beyond a point. However anchoring can help provide a comparatively more secure anchorpoint, and will work fine. My opinion is that it is more of a hindrance than a help in the long run though. Mark
+1, but I didn't encounter any of the disadvantages, I've found it a more intimate way of playing. does that sound a bit creepy? I also (try to) mute the strings below the one I'm playing with the fingers of my left hand as mentioned by Jennifer

Bought Wills LittleMark II head today. Top unit, exactly as described, He's great to deal with, and helped me out by dropping the amp off. Thanks very much mate cheers Steve

  10.
Eight: you are right about Ableton, very user-friendly, after 1/2 an hour I'd imported some drum loops from EZdrummer, synched 4 different keyboard midi tracks and played a bass groove along at the same time thru an audio track. It has a GUI feel that I find a lot easier and more logical to move around in so i guess the Cubase LE will gather some more dust while I learn the ropes.
I'll give Ableton a +1, I have cubase with reason and BFD, had to set up a separate winXP partition on my laptop, which was a complete PITA, and use it with a M-Audio FW410. The whole cubase thing I find unmusical and not particularly intuitive. I bought an M-Audio Fast Track USB this week, which installed in Vista with no problems, and I'm using Ableton Live Lite, and it's great - I'm going to do the upgrade soon because I find the whole creative process much easier with Live

  13. I think you should be telling all this to Carl the manager, and expect to get a cash reduction on a new cab for your trouble. Failing that you could write to head office with your complaint (I assume they are a chain)
  14.
I think he's a bit of a retard. Fair play for having a view and sticking to it. But he's Jeff Berlin. He's done nothing musically of interest to me EVER. There are plenty of musicians who took the short cuts, who didn't learn to read, who interest me musically in almost everything they do. Some of these guys have no real technical skill, I just like what they do. Also, Jeff Berlin seems to have the view that if your not learning to read then you shouldn't be playing an instrument. What about the countless people who are happy blindly fumbling around in their bedrooms just for the fun of it? What about those gigging musicians who go out of a saturday night with their covers band for a laugh and a bit of beer money. Not everyone wants to be a mulletted, hi-tech wearing git like him. He always sounds very bitter about the fact that there are countless "lesser" bass players who have much more success than he does. Mention Jeff Berlin outside of the bass community and you'll get one response; "who?"
+1 I like punk, indie, rock, where the theoretical side isn't required particularly, and some of it isn't musically challenging, but that doesn't mean it's any less valid, some of the more popular covers we play are the simpler ones. Having said that, I do practice to improve my playing and reading, and I am interested in theory, but I do it because I want to, not because anyone else says I should
  15. If you're prepared to post it I'll take it off your hands
  16. cool, I'm quite taken by the fretboard markers and the rail pickups
  17. Looking really good Dave - as I said in Alans thread, the top looks mesmerising. You must be really chuffed
  18. don't know what the value is but that could be the basis of a cool circuit bending project
  19.
Deaver Junior fully kitted out in accordance with heath and safety
tut tut, I don't see any breathing apparatus. Have fun tho' - I got a real sense of achievement doing my frankenP project
  20. Would that amp stand be stable enough for two Omni 10.5s with a rack-mounted head? If so, I might be interested (depending on shipping costs obviously as well)
