Top three attributes of a drummer - your opinion?

You don't offend at all!! If I tried to take any sort of power tool to a bass then I'm sure the results would be offensive to everyone here. My DIY skills are shockingly bad and mostly just involve swearing at inanimate objects. I'd love to have a go at modifying a bass outside of a few things I can do with a screwdriver, but it's not for me I'm afraid 😁

If you read his blurb about the vid he says something about Bruce Thomas contacting him and saying he's one of the only people he's seen to nail all the fills. Bruce Thomas even posted this vid on his own site in a hall of fame! I love his background! I guess you're not into horror, but he has a few other vids going through his horror collectables and his Halloween decorations. Great stuff!!

I had a 75JB deco off them (are deco's still a thing they do?) and it was a lovely bass......that also had the ability to attract black holes into its gravitational pull.

Those new J's do look great green pink and LPB all look pretty tempting. Does anyone know what the deal is with 'caramelised maple'? Is it just regular maple that has been dyed rather than roasted? Or maybe it's been fried?
-
I thought that when I saw those J basses the other day, but the tuners are different. I wonder if there's still something more to come?

I love this line, it's a lot of fun to play and has some nice little fills in it. When I first learnt it I got all of the little fills down (I think?!) but just add in which ever I fancy playing and don't stick to the recorded version. There are some great lessons and covers on YouTube to help you and your wife out when it comes to learning it. Troy nails it here 😃 (as ever)

Following the cliche: Precision 62, Sunburst, Tort, Rosewood

Just to add to the burst and tort P basses, here's mine. It's a 2016 MIJ Hama Okamoto sig. Essentially it's a 62 PBass body with a 62 JB neck. -

Loverly bass! And it is a US model. As well as having US pups, you can spot the US models as they have spiral bridges (apart from the 70s reissues) and have the tuners with the large bass plates. -
There's also Fiona Kitschen from Tropical F-uck Storm.. And Hiro-chan, from Otoboke Beaver....
-
Billy Corgan seems to have a thing for female bassists. As well as those already mentioned, he's also played with..... Ginger Pooley.... Nicole Fiorentino.....

I really used to hate the headstock when I first saw the Sire range. Now I just don't like it 😁

I've heard good things about the LeBass! It'd be a bit excessive to get another pre if you're happy with the LeBass, but you could get a MiM, set of GZRs and a preamp for £800ish?
-
Same here, Aaron's tone is pretty gnarly. Get yourself a Sunn Beta bass pre along with your new bass and you're there!
-
If you want a more aggy PBass then you could pick up an older SB1.......? Or just whack some EMG GZRs in whatever PBass you pick up. I think they're based on Geezer's 70s PBass pups, so are a bit more toppy.
-
I'd always heard this, so had written them off whenever one came up near me, despite being really interested in the MFD pups and liking what I had heard from vids/reviews. I played one the other day and didn't think they were too bad. Despite being chunky at the nut, it didn't feel too deep front to back. Now I'm kicking myself for all the ones I've missed out on!
-
The P5R is pretty tasty in natural..... If they did that body with the roasted maple neck then I'd be very tempted!
-
The 70s PBasses do it for me in both vids, they just seem to have a bit more bite to them and sound like they're snarling their way through a song!
-
I've got your back on this. I really like the headstocks and can't see what all the fuss is about. If it comes to a fight we can use the headstocks like a pointed stick!
-
There's been some great players mentioned already, I'd throw Georgia South from Nova Twins into the mix as well. She has some ace lines/riffs and plays with cool effects too.

Do you have any preference on neck (size, finish, frets) or tone? Generally they're all PBasses, right? So you're going to be in the same ball park tone wise. I played a Vintera 50s P and Player Series P the other day in guitarguitar. The Player Series was a more modern hi-fi tone to my ears and a bit clinical. The Vintera was rounder sounding, but still had some grunt to it - I really liked it. The only thing that put me off was the neck as it's quite a chunky boy, its thin back to front, so not unmanageable, but still quite wide in the hand, especially down the dusty end. I've sold basses with thinner necks because of that issue, but it still doesn't stop me wanting to buy one! Who goes up the dusty end on a P Bass anyway?!?!?! If I was looking at a P Bass I'd be thinking about 2 options......... MIJ PB 70US. Lovely necks (40mm - the same as the Nate Mendel) that are a dream to get around. Gloss finish and thin vintage frets, which I really like. Ace workmanship and US pups/hardware. G&L SB1. The MFD pups can be lovely and vicious, but there's loads of play in them and they can be gentle too. I always keep an eye out for them in the sale forums here and they don't come up too often. I don't even think many shops stock them over here, so if you wanted to go full fat US then ordering from the States might be your only option. You'd get a load of custom options if you did this and @Ricky Rioli would be your man to chat to on how best to go about it. If you wanted the cheaper option then pick up a G&L Tribute SB2. Same bridge and MFD pups that are in the US models, with an added J pup for more bite. What @Lozz196 doesn't know about PBasses probably isn't worth knowing 😃
-
I had the exact same problem when I first picked up a J. It took me ages and lots of playing around with pickup height, blend an EQ'ing before I got to a place where I was happy with the tone. My J is a G&L Tribute JB and I eventually upgraded the pups and loom and am now even happier with it. It sounds like a series parallel switch could be what you're after, it does change the tone of a J completely so it's almost like not having a J at all, but I like using it in certain songs where I want more bottom end.

I think if we knew the answers to the following then we might be able to get you some more meaningful suggestions..........What have you got at the mo (complete signal chain) and what's wrong with them, what are they missing from the tone you want? Aaaand, what is the tone you want? The answer might be more to do with some EQ options or a pedal rather than picking up new pups. However, not too long ago I replaced the pups in my Jazz and looked at a few, spending countless hours on YouTube to try and get a gauge of the choices out there. My favourites were...... - DiMarzio Model J. Hum cancelling, ceramic humbuckers. These sounded really beefy, but not quite like a trad Jazz. - Fender Pure Vintage 74. These are one of the most middy J pups around, so will cut through and add some horrible aggression to your tone. Love em! I went for the 74s and couldn't be happier with them. You could also talk to ki0gon on here and get one of his looms (maybe even look at that first as it'd be a cheaper option), I added one of those with a tone bypass (for more agg!) and also a series/parallel push pull. That really adds more beef to the tone and my J is now a monster!
