Just had a look and Andertons have the new Kiloton's in stock if you wanted to check them out. They also have this B Stock SB2 for chirpy cheap https://www.andertons.co.uk/bass-dept/bass-guitars/b-stock-%3A-g-l-tribute-sb-2-bass-in-sonic-blue-3-ply-white-guard-scratches-on-bridge-was-112377

The tributes are great, you get so much bass for the dosh. They've released a few new colours too, there's more on the G&L site, but here's my favourites..... I haven't seen them in stock anywhere though ๐ If it were me, I'd go for the SB2. It's got a slimmer neck than the LB100, a bit more versatility with the PJ setup and the MFD pups. What's not to love?!?

They're so nice that I almost considered selling my other basses and buying another one, just so I could have a P with flats and P with rounds. I soon came to my senses, but I do always keep an eye out for another one, just in case.......
-
Is it just the tone you don't like about your current bass'? And what's been wrong with the P's you've played that made them not 'the one'? If you know the answer to those then you'll be closer to finding what series P that might fit the bill, it even if it's def a new bass you need. I've had a few Precision's and always ended up thinking they're a bit boring (mostly just because everyone has one) and moved them on, I've also always hated natural finishes. Anyway, now one of my favourite basses is a natural Japanese P with a maple board ๐คจ It just sounds so good with the rest of the band and always gets compliments. It's a 70s reissue, so also has a neck a lot closer to a jazz, which is a big plus for me too.

Different Genres - Same or Different Gear for Each?
Jonesy replied to Lozz196's topic in General Discussion
I use 2 completely different tones for the 2 bands I'm in, so I have a few different setups. Grungy noise band = horrible clanky mess, plenty of hi gain, driven solid state, distortion and bright round wounds. Blues band = smooth buttery fatness with occasional tubey overdrive and flats. I use the same head and cab for both, with a lot of the difference coming from pedals and strings. If the 2 bands were similar sounding then I'd probably get away with sharing gear, but I don't think it's doable. We'll, I tell myself all of this anyway so I can hoard more gear ๐ -
Before starting this thread I didn't know this Bowie tune, but it's an absolute cracker. 3 great versions of it so far, but I think this one is my favourite. Thanks again for all of the suggestions. On to White Room 95 next ๐

I generally don't care too much about the bridge (I even don't mind the Gibson 3 point bridge ๐คจ) and whatever tonal difference there is would probably be lost in the mix imo. However, this bass whisperer vid on the difference between a locked and unlocked G&L bridge is pretty good and you can hear quite a difference...... Whether or not it makes much of a difference when the rest of the band kick in is another thing, but I do lock the bridge on my G&L. You can hear a difference here in this comparison too...... I wouldn't say it makes the tone more vintage sounding though, nor would I go out of my way to change a bridge unless there was something wrong with it

I do love BC for the endless recommendations and for being a deep pool of knowledge! There are a lot of great suggestions from everyone and I'm working my through them. I'm near the end of disc 1 of stage and the versions of The Jean Genie & Speed of Life have been the standouts so far. Looking forward to hearing Stay!

You beat me to it, I don't get that logic at all ๐ค

Ah makes sense I guess seeing as time was against him. I gave Low a listen today too and liked the playing there. The Berlin trilogy are the 3 albums I had origianlly listened to completely. Thinking about it, that's wrong as I also own Let's Dance, so that makes 4 albums from his catalogue! Have you got any other live albums you'd suggest giving a go?
-
I listened to Blackstar at the time of his passing, but have just gone through it again today. Sue is a great track with a nice line, it gets a bit horrible on places, which is great! Any idea why Dorsey isn't on it though?
-
I checked out that Soul Tour '74 live album off the back of your suggestion in another Bowie thread and it's a cracker, thanks for that! I'll give those other suggestions a spin tomo when I've got some decent speakers to do them justice.
-
Ta very much for that, I'll check Blackstar out in more detail as well as his Glasto set. Her vocals are out of this world! I checked out a few versions of Under Pressure on YT and didn't realise she could sing like that too.

You know, I was going to caveat Gail Ann Dorsey and probably should have in my original post - I know she's a great bassist, but I've never heard her play on a Bowie tune and been blown away. In truth, part of the problem with that statement is that I haven't listened to loads of Bowie and I've listened to even less of Bowie live, which I'd imagine is where the bass lines get noodled away on. If you have any clips of her (or other Bowie bassists) that you really like then I'm sure my ears would be grateful ๐

A singer of a old band was once so drunk that he stumbled into the drumkit, luckily it didn't completely ruin the song and we were able to play on. I think that whole gig was cursed though as later on in the set there was a photographer on stage getting too close for comfort and he ended up tripping on my cable, ripping it out of my bass, and I gently nudged him off stage with my foot. We had a producer who had worked with Biffy Clyro down to watch us that night, so it wasn't the best night for that to happen. He thought it was 'very rock n roll', needless to say that was the last we heard from him ๐ Band break ups on stage is a great little YT wormhole to go down though, this is pretty cringe....

I'm not the biggest Bowie fan - I know his hits and a handful of album tracks, but can't say I've actually listened to more than 3 of his studio albums (an issue that I am fast remedying with the help of the favourite Bowie albums thread on here). Anyway, by chance of the Spotify algorithm, one of the album tracks from 'The Man Who Sold The World' was on my play list and the bass really jumped out at me, so I gave the whole album a listen and was pleasantly surprised. I generally think Bowie's bassists are 'fine' and nothing had really grabbed my attention before, but I really like the playing on 'The Man Who Sold The World' - it's great stuff with a tone I really dig and interesting lines that aren't overly busy to the detriment of the song. The whole album actually surprised me tbf, and is a lot rockier than I had expected. It's almost like Bowie is backed by Mountain or Zeppelin ๐ Anyway, the bass player is Tony Visconti and there's loads of stuff out there that he's produced etc, but I can't seem to find much about his bass playing outside of this album and a Bowie covers band he's in. Does anyone know if he's played on other albums? Here's the track that got me hooked....

Some of their prompts aren't the best at helping with GAS....... I've never bought a guitar from Amazon, but it does know me well and it's hard to disagree with it ๐
-
That's exactly what I thought, it's just lacking the oopmh that their previous albums have. It's a shame because Aaron's bass tone is pretty huge and always something I look forward to. On the plus side, they're still killing it with their videos!
-
Thanks for reminding me about that, I've been meaning to check it out for ages and it's now on my list for tomorrow ๐ค Another good choice, although the production isn't quite as raw sounding as their previous albums ,which is a shame imo. My favourite so far has been Drool by Part Chimp. Going to see them in a few weeks too and I can't wait! Welfare Jazz by Viagra Boys is a close 2nd. On the flip side, I was quite disappointed with Arrows by Red Fang. They're one of my favourite bands and it's not a bad album, but the production seems to have sucked all the low end out. Maybe it sounds better to guitarists.
-
How many bottles do they have to fosters in to meet their targets on urinary volume? ๐ค I use them for a lot of things to be honest. Like others have said, for price and efficiency, they're hard to beat. When it's music related buys I try to buy from a shop, or at least an online music shop. For gifts and that I try Etsy first, but prime next day delivery is pretty handy when I've forgotten a bday!

That Waterstone is lovely and I really like that scroll top horn. I was looking around at potential basses to use and the Ibanez Jet King really fits the bill with the retro look. They're not the cheapest of cheap basses to use though. If a cheapo Bronco or Talman come up near me then I may be tempted for a bit of fun
-
Ah nice! I keep on toying with the idea of picking up a beater short scale and having a go, but then I think it may just sit in a corner gathering dust after a couple of weeks. I haven't got a band situation I could use it in, so it'd just be for noodling around on and playing some Morphine tunes on. Was there any reason why you chose fretless over fretted?
-
There's a few topics over on TB about him, his gear and setup etc, but there doesn't seem to be much over here. I was just wondering if anyone has played any slide bass or setup a 2 string bass? Here's some Morphine for your listening holes
-
Nice, very nice. They really are lovely basses with a wide range of tones available. Good luck with and have fun with it. I have to stop reading all these Casady bass topics, it's no good for GAS and makes me regret selling mine!

I really love this one and it works a lot better than it should! https://youtu.be/JR3uz8rq4ng
