How can you tell a good drummer and a bad drummer apart?
MacDaddy replied to Phil Starr's topic in General Discussion
On a serious note, the two things I look for in a 'good' drummer are; 1) Can keep time ...(snip)
Thing is, there's keeping time, and there's keeping time with the band. Listen to any live footage of Guns n Roses during their first album. Steve Adler is not a rock solid time keeper, but they slow and speed up as a band, which kind of adds to what they were doing. -
“The Monks of Cool, whose tiny and exclusive monastery is hidden in a really cool and laid-back valley in the lower Ramtops, have a passing-out test for a novice. He is taken into a room full of all types of clothing and asked: Yo, my son, which of these is the most stylish thing to wear? And the correct answer is: Hey, whatever I select.”
It always baffles me why people use free, highly restrictive versions of 'name' DAWs when Reaper is available. Si
because as a noob, the bell and whistles of non-restricted DAW's just serve to confuse the issue. Studio One Free, is a complete DAW without the frippery.

Anyone else using this? I've finally got a decent laptop and interface and am going to try to use it, complete numpty and technophobe that I am.

John is still spraying. He said it's taking a fair bit of building up to get the decals level with the rest of the finish and then sanding back, but he should have all the lacquer work done this week. He's gonna send a few pictures through as soon as it's done, then he'll be assembling and finishing off the neck. I mentioned that I reckon the strap locks (Shaller type) should be black, and he has some that are going on. Time to dust off my favorite drummer joke: What did the drummer get on his IQ test? Saliva. -
South East Bass Bash No.10, Surrey, Saturday 24th September 2016
MacDaddy replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Events
I might have to be a tentative for this now. My re-re-rescheduled surgery is now scheduled for this coming Monday (I almost got out of it again with the doctors strike though), and I'm not supposed to drive for 2 weeks afterwards. It's going to be a cracking day, and if I'm anywhere close to capable I'll be there.
There are people from that London going. Maybe you could cadge a lift? -
Players who's tone you love but would never use yourself.
MacDaddy replied to Painy's topic in General Discussion
J J Burnel, loved the tone on the early Stranglers stuff but can't imagine using it on anything else other than Stranglers covers.
Similar to Lemmy. Astounding bass sound, but useless unless you are playing Motorhead covers. -
He's not wrong, y'know, and the same applies to bassists, too (as, indeed, to all musicians...). Technique for technique's sake is very rarely what's required. Who was it said 'Less is more.'..? Wise words, usually.
but then you get Keith Moon. -
Similarly MacDaddy at the last Sussex bass bash I went to., I think the only lefties were me and Sylvia! And I think I know what she'd say...."Warwick"!
Doh!
Having sold my Jazz bass because I decided it was not really me, I now only have one bass - a Hot Rod Precision - which I gig regularly. Only having one bass makes me slightly nervous! I prefer a P Bass (which is not the point, we've done this before....) so my choice is between an older bass maybe from the 90's or a brand spanking new one (American Standard). I have looked at the competition, but I'm a Fender kind of guy. Even if that makes me dull, that's how it is. What would you do?
If you are able to get to a Bassbash, there are usually plenty of P's for you to try and P owners to enthuse about their P's. If you are anywhere near the South East, the SE Bassbash is soon...
At that price it's hard to say no.
which is why i didn't!
