If you had to describe the style of this song what would you say? Please pigeon hole it and give it a label http://www.myspace.com/561894423 It's a demo using the resources available (so in future it doesn't have to be a female vocalist) but you should get the idea. ta.
Thanks for your comments. If you want to see some pics from that night, and of the bass, here they are, on my blog: http://luthiery.co.uk/2011/02/01/michael-h...-starship-bass/ Hope I haven't broken any rules of self-promotion on here. Apologies if I have, and I'll delete this post and PM if so. Let me know. The Jazz/MM pickups combo is because Michael said "Imagine if I could have a bass that sounded like a jazz bass, but if you flick a switch, it's a MM". Fortunately, Delano make the hybrid, which does that very thing, and looks cool. Jim
that would look pant-wettingly awesome with some orange DR Neons
Just downsize
already there mate I was forced in to it, when I switched cars from a hatchback to a saloon. The speakers in each cab are wrapped, so the size of each is not much bigger than a single 10 or 12 and they fit nicely in the boot.
just curious, do you think these will be the bog standard ones that are in the shops or pimped up Vintage axes?
any bass will benefit from a proper set up, and I'm guessing these guys have their own techs - at least on tours? So IMO if they are the bog standard ones they probably play and sound that little bit better.
This is probably the most interesting feature rich instrument I've seen in a while, well done to you.
yet deceptive in it's simplicity - only 1 pup and just a volume control (the other pot is for the LED's).
Macdaddy, That bass is superb!!!
thanks *blush*

I have 2 straplocks on the bottom of my straps. One keeps the bass at the same position I play when sitting down. The other lets the bass go low for throwing shapes and posing.
Yeah I know about the EB1,but I seem to remember an old interview where he says that Fenders were too expensive, and that was why he went for the Hofner, because he wouldn't buy it on tick.
I remember reading the same but about the Gibson IIRC he liked the Gibby because there were no left hand basses available and the EB1 wouldn't look too bad played left handed. Sir Paul, if you are out there and are one of the 'famous bass players on BC' can you please set us straight?
Indeed and is that a scalloped fingerboard for the D & G strings in the highest 7 frets ?
Billy Sheehan has his top 5 scalloped but as I've got a 2 octave neck I thought I'd best have a couple more
Does the handle looking cut out serve a purpose? Edit or it it an aesthetic thing? I always wondered that about the gem guitar too
no purpose other than I can throw it about a bit and pose I do like the aesthetic though.
That is VERY interesting. I've never been a fan of headless basses, but that really uses the whole headless concept to the nth degree. It's definitely feature rich.
an extra 2 frets for the E string and a bendwell for the other strings
Didn't McCartney get the Hofner because it was something like £40 compared to a Fender which was over £100??
yep, but not the Fender, it was the original Gibson EB1 which was violin shaped, so he went for the cheaper copy.
-
That's really cool. Is the pickup built into the ramp or is it piezo's?
it's underneath the thumbchum (all in one pup cover/thumbrest/ramp).

Mick Quinn from Supergrass played his Ibanez Blazer bass. Billy Gould from Faith No More used his Aria Pro 2 not bass but Frank Dunnery from It Bites used a jap Squire strat.
I seem to recall some bloke using a cheapy hofner violin bass on some records .
it was too, it was a copy of the much more expensive Gibson.

The paint job on the Blitz is aftermarket, the design looks well but the finish is now cracked and has those lines in places which you might expect on a 24 year old bass, and it has been mojo'd, not least by me during a gig when the strap lock (Grolsh rubber) came off I still need to give it a tweak and lower the action a tad, and put on some proper straplock buttons.

not sure why I haven't put my custom up:

So, any thoughts on ditching the rig? Would you be able to cope quite happily without one?
i dont listen to alot of this genre of music.. but i genuinely really liked that!! thanks for sharing... just one thing... we dont see enough of your bass! playing is great.. is it a Squire, or a 75 ri?
+1 not enough bass player Love the bass sound, plenty of bottom end without sounding muddy.

In the vid Billy says the Fender P is the greatest bass ever made. So no point buying his Yamaha then?

I've had my rig (2x10 combo on top, 2x12 underneath) for about 5 years. I've used it for 2 auditions, 1 rehearsal and 2 gigs. When I was gigging I usually went through the provided backline or DI'd from my ME-50B. For rehearsals I use the studio amps, and at home I play through the computer which has studio monitors. Don't get me wrong, my rig is quality (IMO) - it's Tech Soundsystems - but as I'm without a car at the moment it's more convenient not to use it. Plus I'm happy with sounds from the ME-50B when DI'd, so I'm wondering do I really need my rig? Silddx is my inspiration as he seems to be quite happy to be rigless and just use his POD floorboard.
I remember seeing a Morphine concert (probably the last one before he died) and noticing he played with a jazz bass with only two strings!
the guy from Presidents of the United States of America does too.

used to play Pumping on your Stereo in an old band. Great bass line.
Found it. The Shubb Talon:
that's the fella! Always gets a few looks when I whip it out
I picked up a couple of K & M Lightwave stands off that Ebay a few years back & would gladly buy another if I needed it. Robust, light & stable, plus they fold flat and will slot into a gigbag. Pete.
I've got something similar, except mine looks like a batwing.

I'm gonna do a cinema search and see if it's still playing.
I've checked out the fine print on that insurance and it's not that good. You're not covered in your car for one.
you are if it's not a soft top or covertable, and your gear is out of sight. "We will not pay any amount if the equipment or instrument is left in an unattended vehicle, unless that vehicle is of the fully enclosed type (not a soft topped or convertible vehicle), and provided that whilst left in an unattended vehicle you had hidden it from view in the vehicle (for example, in a glove compartment or boot), locked the vehicle, with all windows and sunroofs closed, and used all available security systems."
