Sad but we may never see the likes of this again!
Looking at that bass, it just looks like a health hazard. And if the club atmosphere did that to a bass, imagine the havoc it would be playing with your lungs!
It could be carcinogenic. Cigarette smoke can leave " "substantial levels" of toxins on smoke-exposed material." http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8503870.stm -
my home has an open plan kitchen/lounge and it's where I keep my stack - 2x10 combo on top, 2x12 cab underneath. We've just had a bit of a move around and put the fridge freezer at the end of the room divider (a big bookshelf that gives a bit of seperation to the kitchen area and lounge area). This now means the fridge feezer is in the middle of the room, the front facing the kitchen, and the rear covered by my stack in the lounge. So, my question is, is this okay or is there anything coming out of the back of the fridge freezer that could be harmful to my rig? ta.

ok, so opinions mostly veering on the negative so far FWIW as I op'd, I don't name my basses, but I think they should have a name. My custom Shuker is unique enough to warrant an individual designation, rather than 'my custom Shuker'. And my custom Iceni, different neck & different body but still Iceni, should have name - Trigger's broom? As for my Hamer Blitz, it's just a beast, so it should be the beast?

Much maligned are the French Horn players. I've never thought tuning was that unstable? But to return OT How does the B = Bb thing work? The Germans use the same tonality as us. Is it just in the transalation of note names, rather than of note position?
The first musician that springs to my mind here is Pete Townshend - an extraordinarily gifted & visionary songwriter/composer who defined a musical genre or two, never mind an instrument. I've been listening to The Who a lot lately (they were the first band I was ever obsessive about - 35-odd years ago!) and considering everything Townshend had done by 1973, it's fair to say the bugger didn't leave much for the rest of us!

When I read the title of this post I immeadiately put forward Peter Dennis Blandford Townshend. As I scrolled down I saw that Bassassasin had beaten me to it, and I am glad. Forget all the media hype if 6 odd years ago, Pete was and is a musical legend...a genius. His productivity over the years (not all reached the public arena) is amazing. He is, in my opinion, the Stephen Fry of the rock world...as soon as he speaks, I listen and in all cases, I am glad I did. He is a national musical treasure and it will be a sad day when he joins Keith and John.
where's the book Pete?

A bloke I know plays with a drummer, who has played with Elton John. The drummer went from a gig a stadium gig at Vicarage Road to a covers pub gig in Luton. Reason for doing so? Because it was FUN!
H is definately B, B is Bb in German. I'm a French Horn player by trade - I have to transpose into all sorts of keys all the time, and loads of it is German music with the dreaded H - down an augmented 4th for me - always a bit of a head-scratcher.
A girl went out on a date with a trumpet player, and when she came back her roommate asked, "Well, how was it? Did his embouchure make him a great kisser?" "Nah," the first girl replied. "That dry, tight, tiny little pucker; it was no fun at all." The next night she went out with a tuba player, and when she came back her roommate asked, "Well, how was his kissing?" "Ugh!" the first girl exclaimed. "Those huge, rubbery, blubbery, slobbering slabs of meat; oh, it was just gross!" The next night she went out with a French horn player, and when she came back her roommate asked, "Well, how was his kissing?" "Well," the first girl replied, "his kissing was just so-so; but I loved the way he held me!"

wasn't h Bb? Something to do with composing tunes based on the surname of J S Bach, so the notes/chords/harmony were based around B, A, C, Bb.

I never have, but being a bloke I would have to give them female names. Considering a bass male wouldn't feel right - to me - due to the physical closeness and intimacy of how they are held and played. I remember someone on here who has a pair of 'Rays and calls them Ashley and Marie-Kate So, do you name your basses and is there a story behind the name?
Westone Thunder 1A & the heaviest H/H 1X15 combo in the world. Ever. Both belonged to the college. The first time I owned a bass and amp together for the first time - 70's Guild B301 and Traynor 60w valve combo. Sound = beautiful, unfortunately not loud enough. Would love to have kept them, but had to sell to buy.
Actually that is a complete lie. about 15 years earlier I had a Fender P with added J and bass-boost switch, and a Marshall 100w guitar and bass head with a Peavey Black Widdow cab. The head was pants.

did swapsies with Ped a while ago with some of guitar stands. He gave the option of swapping back if I wasn't happy - which was nice

Rob very kindly did me a huge favour and converted an old tape of mine to mp3

I've played through Jack's too and got to crank it up. Very loud, very impressive. I'm old school metal so absolutely loved the sound.

yeah, Marty Friedman's Exotic Metal Lead Guitar tuition video, is pretty much applying jazz theory to metal without calling it jazz
Mine's through the MU, with Hencilla Canworth - you get £2000 of insurance free, and then 'top up' to include extra that goes over that...Lot's of other similar benefits aswell when you join the MU.
same as.

finding a bunch of people with the same musical vision, and drive to do it, can be very difficult. Regardless of talent, any band that has 'made it' has had a lot of luck. Partysounds, Musofinder and joinmyband, seem to be highly regarded for lookng for bands.
Just seeing your name, MacD, reminded me of another 'discovery' (I had this one ages ago but hadn't listened to it for a long time until last week when it caught my ear big time). Dave Murray's Latin Big Band: Now Is Another Time. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Now-Another-Time-D...mp;sr=1-1-fkmr0 Really, really strong playing. Loads of energy. Not a smooth big band like teh Viallge Vanguard or Bob Mintzer's unit. More like the Mingus Big Band, looser, more edgy. Very Latin based.
what with Laurence Cottle's involvement in Black Sabbath, I wondered if that was going to be Iron Maiden's Dave Murray There is precedence, Alex Skolnick from thrash band Testament originally left them to play jazz, and formed The Alex Skolnick Trio.
Its funny how frequently these posts appear and I have been guilty of making them in the past .The way it works is that everyone gives the standard advice which is take a break, keep your most important gear, sell the rest and come back to it when you want to ,that’s sensible advice. Without knowing you there’s not much else to add except that when I’ve been in your situation I also feel a bit of quilt or anger that I’ve invested so much money and time in something only to stop it which when you think about it is silly as its supposed to be fun and if its not fun then do something which is !
this.

okay, my turn! I'm currently bandless so these are from a previous band. In pic 1 I'm 2nd left, pic 2 top left, and pic 3 bottom right.
Better intonation and tuning.
didn't the Warwick Just Intonation bass try to do that. Wasn't fanned though. 1st and 3rd basses to the left - they are meant to look like that!
All gear except ur bass is provided. Just turn up, plug in and go! The onboard techs are great and u rarely have to soundcheck as it's pretty much the same gigs every week!
on board techs? Like the sound of that!

Over the tears I've aquired so many leads - all different types. When gigging I'm wireless, so the only ones I actually use are my OBBM guitar leads to connect my multi fx and a XLR for the cabs. If I don't take 2 basses, I'll take a spare set of strings (played in for the same reasons mentioned by ezbass) a spare strap, my batwing guitar stand and a spare of each cable type. I always have spare 9v batteries, but will be screwed if the multi fx packs up. It's a ME50B and I've no reason to expect it will, but I might invest in a cheap DI - just in case.

How did the gear thing work? What did you have to supply? I assume gear maintenance was down to yourselves?
