Or shall I start a Bert Weedon 'Play In A Day' tribute band?
i think that would be worth seeing
Lol! But you loved us though didn't you?
entertainment and a great show - and not just for Kiss fans
I don't know about tribute bands, but I reckon most players will end up playing covers at some point in their musical lives.
Tuition books are full of 'covers' isn't that how we start to learn? Unless you are Paul Simonon of course

Are there debates about integrity for orchestral players, who play the material as accurately as possible? Maybe period-instrument orchestras are looked down on as being the 'tributes' of the orchestral world? Re. tribute bands, as a punter I want to be entertained and have a good night. Some tribute bands do, some don't. I once saw a Coldplay tribute (not my choice) and the best reaction they got was during the encore when they played 'I believe in a thing called love' AFAIA the tribute band started in Australia, when due to the original acts not touring there, people made their own entertainment.
Paul, don't forget to bring that black Scavenger with you
is it possible (please, please, please) you can bring one of your Axe basses? Just so I can pose with it? -
I have seen children with communication/learning difficulties and/or physical disabilities who may never be proficient at playing an instrument, but the unbridled joy they get from creating sound and being able to express themselves greatly enhances their well-being and development.
Hope he manages to keep his trademark sound!
to a certain extent it doesn't matter what he plays through, he will always sound like Bruce Foxton. Saw him with SLF in 94 - played and sounded awesome.

I'm coming to play! will bring my custom Shuker and possibly my Hamer Blitz or Iceni Zoot. Can I ask for/suggest a set up master class? The idea being someone stands at the front and goes through a set up, and we all work on our own basses following the hints and tips. If as many people as possible try to bring their own tools, then lending to the odd person shouldn't be a problem. Will there be the space to do this (an empty classroom?) and is there anyone who wants to lead the class? -
i've played for a few college productions, never in a pit though always somewhere in the rafters. Good fun, but lots of waiting around during rehearsals.
-
a couple of decades ago I turned down a place at Leeds College of Music, purely because their qualification was a graduate diploma and I wanted a 'proper' degree. Things have probably changed. The guys I knew from from LCM back in the day knew their stuff and could play.
-
my custom Shuker. It has all the features I wanted from other basses all on the one bass, and it has pink LED's that flash
-
All of them. I only sold because I had to, if I could have kept them and had the space I would.
-
i had a porta bass rig about 5 years ago. Loved it, totally gave the Ampeg sound. Only problem for me was that for rehearsals I had to put the head through a 4 x 10 to compete with loud metal guitars.
I think this sums up my feelings. It's all down to the individual to relate to the people he/she plays with and for so that we can achieve a level of satisfaction we are happy with. There are no shoulds or shouldn'ts in life. In some individuals searching for what might be regarded, by some, as perfect technique can shut the fun out of what you do.
I agree with most of what you say, but if the way you play is going to cause you health problems - you shouldn't do it that way.
-
Madness were never sh1t, but the Nutty Boy image and wacky video's did detract from their fantastic musicianship.
-
Point taken but I think you missed the key sentence in my thought which was "is for the individual to decide" Which I think brings our sentiments much closer.
point taken and agreed.
It depends on how define as 'success as a bass player'. If you want a long term career as a player, you have to have your technique together. There are hundreds of players around who have had 'success' with their bands, who now don't play because they didn't have the ability to branch out and sustain a career after their band went tits up. Unless you are in the rare minority,if you want success as a bass player,or any musician, need to have your technique together.
so you agree - not necessarily
-
My feeling is, why wouldn't you want to do something as well as you are able? So whether it's 'that important' is for the individual to decide, furthermore they will achieve accordingly... Citing examples of some of the instruments greatest achievers to justify the lack of need for any particular discipline is, in my view, not helpful to the endeavours of the mortal.
Pick with just your thumb and you too could become (arguably) the second most successful bassist in popular music too? That's not really what I'm saying Jake Just adding to the debate is all. The question is 'Is technique that important?'. Well for what? Playing the bass - no. Playing the bass with an increased technical ability - yes. To acheive success as a bass player - not necessarily. To avoid possible injury and negative long term health effects - definitely.
Riiiight.
i did make the point of saying arguably. He probably is though.
-
I don't know who you are referring to, but I don't see that 'just using the thumb' is necessarily poor technique.
let's open this to debate. Has anyone here who teaches bass, ever encouraged a pupil who has full use and control over their picking hand digits, to use just their thumb to pick with?
-
I would very much doubt that MacDaddy is referring to Sting... ...at least, I hope he isn't
no he isn't successful though Sting undoubtedly is I don't think he could be considered the (arguably) second most successful bassist in popular music. I was referring to Bill Wyman.
-
Apologies if I misunderstood your post. You seemed to be getting dangerously close to the "yeah, but what about the legendary Jaco Miller - he never had a lesson in his entire life - I'm going his route" type post
no worries
I don't know of any great bass players who have no or poor technique. Can anyone name one?
depends on your definition of great. I would say the (arguably) second most successful bassist in popular music could be considered great by that fact alone, but he has poor technique by just using his thumb to pick.
-
We can all name 1 or 2 great musicians that have never studied or had a lesson in their life - They are very few and far between. Safe to assume that you (or I) are not one of them and need to put the hours in.
I'm definitely not a great musician who has never studied or had a lesson in their life. I've had lessons
Bumpity. Has anything changed, or are the promoters at this venue still up to the same tricks? S.P.
was wondering the same. The band I've recently joined tend to gig there and don't seem to have any problems.
-
so what do we think of Jamerson? Appalling technique - no teacher would advise a pupil to just pick with one finger - yet we can't deny his genius.
