1. my technique comes from having played classical guitar. I was inspired to play bass because of Nikki Sixx who is not the best bass player in the world (probably not even the best bass player in Crue ) but only copy him in so much as I run about the stage, pose and throw shapes.
  2. still not sure what the legal battle was. The bass was stolen property, as such by law - even US law - it should be returned to the rightful owner, which unless Jaco specified otherwise would be the family
  3. the language we communicate with is music, if you can not read music you are musically illiterate. Illiteracy is not good.
  4.
hopefully will get me hands on this in the next two weeks
looking good, don't forget to post finished pics in the Iceni thread. 5. not funny due to being depressingly accurate
  6. Were Peter King from the USA he probably have already acheived legendary status and renown.
  7.
I think the hottest the heat exchnger gets is ~60 degrees Celcius. That could be wrong as it's information I heard once a few weeks ago.
would that heat have a detrimental effect?
  8.
Or how about an alternative to a wall of Marshalls !!!!
Didn't The Wonder Stuff do something like that?
  9.
I agree with you about live sound, but to be fair most audiences care more about hearing a song they know than the quality of sound... they just expect things to sound good. However, I do think that the poorer quality of Squier basses is highlighted by the fact that hardly any session players rate, promote or recommend them. It is clear that there is just something special about hig-end/vintage Fenders when you record them (in the special same way that playing through a flat compressor can add warmth to your sound from apparently doing nothing).
there are plenty of sig model Squiers. Francis Dunnery used a Squier guitar exclusively during It Bites hey day (not saying it wasn't modded though).
  10. In the main, some severely talented people have been mentioned. But compare them to Mozart, can we still use the term genius?
  11.
This thread seems pointless. You're comparing a budget bass company (squier) with another budget bass company (vintage). It's like discussing which 6p tin of baked beans tastes better... the answer is neither, a STEAK tastes better!!
the topic is 'Is a Squier better than a Fender'. Valid topic for debate which will boil down to personal preference. The original Squiers - with a big Fender logo and a small Squier logo - are often considered far superior to the Fenders of the same era and are still highly sought today. As simon1964 said is there £600 + difference in sound/playability? Does anyone think the audience would notice the difference? Re the steak, what if you are vegetarian?
  12. still not missing it, and if it wasn't for this thread would even know if it was still going.

    *a-hem*

I had a Dalek which I took to the early Bassworld bashes. PJB M-500 head 720w, on top of a 8T & 16B, so 24 of the 5 inch speakers. Loved it, but got a new car and it didn't fit in it. The head only put out 720w at 2ohms but to do that you would need 2 of the biggest cabs. So what I'm wondering is, does the Roadcase make full use of the 750w amp or are extention cabs needed?

  17.
Looking at that bass, it just looks like a health hazard. And if the club atmosphere did that to a bass, imagine the havoc it would be playing with your lungs!
It could be carcinogenic. Cigarette smoke can leave " "substantial levels" of toxins on smoke-exposed material." http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8503870.stm
  18. my home has an open plan kitchen/lounge and it's where I keep my stack - 2x10 combo on top, 2x12 cab underneath. We've just had a bit of a move around and put the fridge freezer at the end of the room divider (a big bookshelf that gives a bit of seperation to the kitchen area and lounge area). This now means the fridge feezer is in the middle of the room, the front facing the kitchen, and the rear covered by my stack in the lounge. So, my question is, is this okay or is there anything coming out of the back of the fridge freezer that could be harmful to my rig? ta.
  19. ok, so opinions mostly veering on the negative so far FWIW as I op'd, I don't name my basses, but I think they should have a name. My custom Shuker is unique enough to warrant an individual designation, rather than 'my custom Shuker'. And my custom Iceni, different neck & different body but still Iceni, should have name - Trigger's broom? As for my Hamer Blitz, it's just a beast, so it should be the beast?
  20. Much maligned are the French Horn players. I've never thought tuning was that unstable? But to return OT How does the B = Bb thing work? The Germans use the same tonality as us. Is it just in the transalation of note names, rather than of note position?
  21.
The first musician that springs to my mind here is Pete Townshend - an extraordinarily gifted & visionary songwriter/composer who defined a musical genre or two, never mind an instrument. I've been listening to The Who a lot lately (they were the first band I was ever obsessive about - 35-odd years ago!) and considering everything Townshend had done by 1973, it's fair to say the bugger didn't leave much for the rest of us!

When I read the title of this post I immeadiately put forward Peter Dennis Blandford Townshend. As I scrolled down I saw that Bassassasin had beaten me to it, and I am glad. Forget all the media hype if 6 odd years ago, Pete was and is a musical legend...a genius. His productivity over the years (not all reached the public arena) is amazing. He is, in my opinion, the Stephen Fry of the rock world...as soon as he speaks, I listen and in all cases, I am glad I did. He is a national musical treasure and it will be a sad day when he joins Keith and John.
where's the book Pete?
  22. A bloke I know plays with a drummer, who has played with Elton John. The drummer went from a gig a stadium gig at Vicarage Road to a covers pub gig in Luton. Reason for doing so? Because it was FUN!
  23.
H is definately B, B is Bb in German. I'm a French Horn player by trade - I have to transpose into all sorts of keys all the time, and loads of it is German music with the dreaded H - down an augmented 4th for me - always a bit of a head-scratcher.
A girl went out on a date with a trumpet player, and when she came back her roommate asked, "Well, how was it? Did his embouchure make him a great kisser?" "Nah," the first girl replied. "That dry, tight, tiny little pucker; it was no fun at all." The next night she went out with a tuba player, and when she came back her roommate asked, "Well, how was his kissing?" "Ugh!" the first girl exclaimed. "Those huge, rubbery, blubbery, slobbering slabs of meat; oh, it was just gross!" The next night she went out with a French horn player, and when she came back her roommate asked, "Well, how was his kissing?" "Well," the first girl replied, "his kissing was just so-so; but I loved the way he held me!"
  24. wasn't h Bb? Something to do with composing tunes based on the surname of J S Bach, so the notes/chords/harmony were based around B, A, C, Bb.
