1. Quite simply there aren't any. In an exam situation you will be expected to do things a certain way - ie 4 part harmonies - but in an exam you are following instruction rather than rules (Bach never bothered he frequently used consecutive 5th and octaves). Rules of harmony? None. A major chord uses certain notes but that is not a rule. Change the notes you get a different chord. Certain keys have certain notes, but knowing them doesn't stop you playing out of key or using unresolved dissonances. What music theory can do is give you an understanding of it all. BTW. There are many wonderful people and musicians who cannot read music and do not know about music theory.
2.
, but don't forget that sometimes breaking "the rules" can sound good too
i'm gonna start another thread about this
3. Been listening to Sun Ra. Challenging.
4. traditional music theory, in terms of examinations, tends to be just as concerned classical history and knowledge (ie when did Beethoven last wash his socks?). It seems to be the application of theoretical knowledge you are after? I'd recommend teacher who knows his stuff, and can show you in an easy to understand manner how to use the modes, work with harmonies etc. Probably a bit more of an expensive option, but some tutors are happy to see students monthly.
5. Is this still with Bassmonkey?
6. Pics or it didn't happen. Or isn't happening. Er, or... just post pics!
7.
I wonder if his approach to the bass would have been quite so unique and left-field if he had received an extensive musical education?
there seems to be a school of thought which suggests musical training holds you back or in someway restricts your ability. Possibly for another thread, along with the old chestnut of 'it's good that I don't know the rules, coz I don't know when I'm breaking them.' In reply to the above, did Arnold Schoenberg's extensive musical education stop him been unique and left-field? How about John Coltrane?
8.
Shame man, was really looking forward to your Shuker. Hope it's nothing serious ?
nah nothing serious, just life getting in the way and stopping me doing what I'd like.
9. looks like you had a decent crowd to play to too! You are now an 'arena band'
10. unfortunately life has intervened and I am no longer able to make it. I'll probably miss most of the match too I shall keep an eye out Sunday night for the pics and will be wishing that I was there.
11. Another possibility could be to negotiate free recording/rehearsal time with the studio for your band.
12. I remember reading somewhere, how Jaco would be doing pinched harmonics in time with the brass stabs. Obviously on that version there is no brass, so he ain't doing it. But if anyone can find a link...
13. in terms of Guitars, the Gibson Les Paul must be the most successful signature model ever. Funny how there are signature models of the Les Paul - signature models of a signature model
14. IMO & YMMV etc... I looked at both of these and tried them, although not in a gig situation, when I was deciding what to get - I ended up with a Boss ME50-B through a trade. If I was buying I would have got the Floor Pod because I prefered the sounds, it was much easier to use and I think cheaper. There are plenty of clips on Youtube for both which may help you decide.

18. my lovely Iceni Zoot.
19.
I like my Shuker a lot, its every bit as good as a Fodera but, like many, I had a long wait. Jon works to his own deadlines for custom work so if you want something special then you'll need to be patient.
this. I probably hold the record at 2 years? TBF to Jon my bass has more than it's fair share of customisation and there was a lot of stuff he had never done before. Totally worth it though, I loves it And the neck? I told Jon what I like and the scale I wanted and he nailed it (so to speak).
20. remember to post pics, if not it didn't happen
21. i'd quite like to see some pics of this
22. my technique comes from having played classical guitar. I was inspired to play bass because of Nikki Sixx who is not the best bass player in the world (probably not even the best bass player in Crue ) but only copy him in so much as I run about the stage, pose and throw shapes.
23. still not sure what the legal battle was. The bass was stolen property, as such by law - even US law - it should be returned to the rightful owner, which unless Jaco specified otherwise would be the family
24. the language we communicate with is music, if you can not read music you are musically illiterate. Illiteracy is not good.
25.
