Just wondered who else might have seen this new bass website called 'For Bass Players Only'. (Or am I just late to this particular party!? ) http://www.forbassplayersonly.com/
you are early if anything! The only posts are by the guy who created the site, so early days. Looks USA based, but I will probably keep an eye on it.
Just out of interest, how is the proofing done? Not that it's any of my business... I just counted the number of frets on the Alleva Copolla and then was a bit perplexed when I saw the spec box.... and as for the final remark from Copollo... what? It took me a few reads to get what was being said! The TC amp review was quite an interesting read because after I tested one at length, it left me kind of cold. OK, everybody has their own preferences - I know that there are as many people who hate EBS amps as love them (I'm not that short-sighted) - so I do try to view things with an open mind... To me, it seemed to be lacking in grunt and power. Certainly, when I dug in, it didn't have the headroom that I was hoping for. It was pleasant enough, extemely portable - but the head came across as quite fragile and it certainly didn't seem to be an amp that provides a big sound on stage. For example, in a rock situation, does it hack it? Was it reviewed in such a situation? OK, we know that all tools aren't fit for all jobs but if that's the case, why is it not stated? Who is this amp aimed at? For what type of environment? Whilst I have nothing but upmost respect for Janek and Ben Epstein (really great guy), they aren't using it in a situation that is comparable to the average reader. (Doesn't Ben use inears so the sound onstage from his amp is of less importance?) Are these guys playing the majority of their gigs where the amp is the only source of bass? I don't think so. How does this amp perform in a real world situtation experienced by most of the readers, where the amp is the back line - with no PA support? Does it cut it as a 5 star amp then? Maybe it does - but the magazine doesn't really address that - and hence my confidence in 5 stars across the board is not that high. It's OK going on about the features of the products being reviewed but it's no use at all if the thing can't hack it out of the bedroom/studio/whatever... Whenever I read a review, these are the things that are going through my head... and these are the questions that are seldom answered. PS - the optional footswitch. How much is it?
what he said ^

started on classical guitar and 7 years later transfered the technique over to bass - via electric guitar. My choice

yorick I see you're in Brum. Was the band the one with Rocky Shades as Dave?
Not really... you're confusing straightforward maths with a 'term', an eighth is a description of duration and it has as much to do with how notes are grouped as anything eg 6/8 can be grouped as 2 3s or 3 2s giving an inner pulse to the bar, or a driving 8ths feel to a rock bassline, or a slow inner four with a triplet feel in 12/8 (one of my fave feels) The bottom number simply lets you know what the note looks like (ie stem with single tail) the top number tells you how many there are in a given bar. For me the bottom line is that the terminology is irrelevant and not worth twisting knickers over, just be au fait with all of it then you can explain yourself well to all comers.
just seen this after I posted. I think we are using the same argument to argue a different point
-
Yes, because you're applying a fraction to a different data set than everyone else. It's the way the notation system currency works, and it isn't related to the meter of a particular track. (Ignoring triplets etc.) A semibreve divides in half to create two minims. A semibreve divides in quarters to create four crotchetts A semibreve divides into eighths to create eight quavers. Just like a pound divides into 100 pence. Always. Irrespective of how much money you have in your pocket.
but that's my point you can't ignore triplets or you are ignoring triplet time and the values change. The value of an 8th should be constant, but obviously it isn't which is why 6 quaver beats to a bar makes sense to me. Bearing in mind how some recent threads have gone, isn't nice that we can disagree and all be perfectly pleasant about it
-
? They're all eighths of a semi-breve. Edit: regardless of how many there are in a bar.
but only in 4/4 do they have the value of an 8th. In 6/8 they have the value of a 6th. I can see I'm fighting a losing battle here
-
6/8 <- see the 8 at the bottom? There are six of those in a bar of 6/8. It makes total sense to me. In Indian music they'd just call it 6, which makes even more sense to me!
so if there are 6 of them, shouldn't they be 6ths? They are only 8ths when you have 8.

How much better is your current bass than your last one?
MacDaddy replied to JPAC's topic in Bass Guitars
I've got a custom bass, and another custom build on the way. But I've still got GAS for a Dean Zone, and Metalman Z. And a Squire VMJ and classic series P. At the end of the day I'm a bassist, and I like looking at basses. That hasn't changed over the last 21 years so I don't think it's gonna change anytime soon -
I'm just interested in where on the neck anyone else plays. I start postition iv The 'keep your distance walk away...' bit I start position vii the mellow bit - position vii the solo bass bit leading to the triplet runs position xii the next bit once the triplets have finished - position v then back to position v for the repeated beginning bit at the end. So who does what differently?
