A pro camera won't make you a pro photographer if you can't use it, right? The same could be said of using a 'pro' instrument. A bass, regardless of cost will or should sound good in the right hands. It should never be the instrument, but the player that is the pro. Having a pro instrument simply helps more...
maybe true, but a pro photographer with a crap camera that overexposes or can't focus isn't gonna take too many great snaps. Likewise a great bassist with a crap cheap bass will still be prone to interference issues and issues of playability and tone. This thread is about the bass not the player which is why I said: By pro job I mean sounds good enough to do a decent job at a gig for the player, with sufficient build quality to negate any interference issues, plays well with a decent set up, and to an average member of the audience would be no different sound wise to a bass 2 or 3 times it's value.
My last few basses have all been quality mid range USA made (Carvin, Fender J, Musicman Sub, Guild B-301) but for my last gig I used a cheap Asian Mustang bass - not to be confused with the Fender Mustang. Anyway no-one commented on the change of sound, loss of tone, etc or even noticed there was a cheaper bass. There's no doubt the quality of budget basses has increased severely since I were a lad (to be said in wistful Yorkshire accent) and the budget bass feature in BGM got me thinking, are there any budget basses (for the sake of argument no more than £200.00 as per the BGM piece) that can do a pro job? By pro job I mean sounds good enough to do a decent job at a gig for the player, with sufficient build quality to negate any interference issues, plays well with a decent set up, and to an average member of the audience would be no different sound wise to a bass 2 or 3 times it's value. I realise this may be entirely subjective, but we may find some common ground? Waddaya reckon?
so we're seeing a lot of basses that are great value and good for the money, but I want to return to the OP and in particular the bit in bold. Great for the money is one thing but do you thing they can do a pro job as defined above?
How can I get that sort of sound in the studio? Recording a funky sounding song in a few weeks, and I bum Earth, Wind and Fire so would quite like a tone a bit like Verdine White used to get.
Soft Cell at the UEA in Norwich a few years ago. 2 blokes and one of them stuck behind keyboards for the night and ne're a bass or guitar in sight all the while, wasn't expecting much. Completely awesome, great gig

What bassists should have a Signature model?
MacDaddy replied to Linus27's topic in General Discussion
Bobby Dall from Poison. Reason? He is bassist in a band who still sell out arenas and stadiums, and headline festivals worldwide. Isn't that the kind of exposure any manufacturer would want? -
I've blown a couple of auditions by not having backing vocals. If you can play and sing at the same time it can only help.

I took Granny to see Billy Elliot - The Musical. I was not looking forward to it, but it was brilliant! The music was great the band were great, and it was also very funny. I did however watch the film a couple of months later, and was mightly disappointed.
I think that Will Young is a pretty decent artist actually.
Decent bloke too, I've met him and he let me get served at the bar first.
Over the years the wife has dragged me along to see Cliff Richard FIVE TIMES!!!! But I have to say that he actually puts on a very good show, has a lot of good songs, and I did get to see Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch.
I've seen Cliff twice, and would go again.
I wasn't there, but this (from the photo thread) encapsulates what I'd hope to find at a bass bash ... a bunch of bass geeks chatting and playing basses So when's the next SE bash ... do I have to wait a year ?
nothing says BassBash like my receding hairline!
No more knocking this mag, folks....please?
sorry but we have to tell it like it is. If it's great we will say so, if not we'll say that. The thing is we all want a great bass mag, but my reading of the thread suggests improvements have been made, but we are still a fair way from great.
What's wrong about closing your eyes during a cool moment of the song??
nothing, but doing it for the whole gig may be a tad excessive.

wot he said ^^^ I've never adhered to the bass player stands at the back school of thought. But also why do people have to look at the neck? You must know where it is?
