1. what we have today is no different, as many have already pointed out, except that today there are better quality budget instruments, which is good as more people playing. Also it's easier to get better quality recordings on a budget, which is good as more people writing and recording. The internet has made distribution and access to music available to anyone who can record. The downside is that because of the ease of access and the number of people doing it, there is a lot of crap out there. There has always been crap out there, but perhaps today it's more noticeable because there are greaters numbers able to put a product out for public consumption.
 2. It's all personal opinion. I've had an Ampeg rig before (okay I had the porta bass rig) and it sounded great and did the job. IMO my old PJB M500 out Ampeged any Ampeg head I'd ever heard, but to be fair I've never stood in front of a SVT and 810 blasting it out. It's the iconic rock/metal bass thing, and if you get off on that I'd say money well spent.
 3. I had one of these years ago. You can get an awesome wah type sound from the Chorus, which I used to use to play Fly Away by Lenny Krevice. Good luck with the sale!

 5.
"It's been a long time since Baroque and Roll"
my point precisely!
 6. SWR do one, it's a bit of a beast though
 7.
MB1. ........How deep is your Bendwell?
8mm
 8. Popular music as we know it today, is a regression in terms of musical evolution. The tonalities, harmonies, rhythmic devices, were all going strong 500 years ago. Popular music, has not progressed music in any way. To talk about how talented popular musicians are today is almost laughable if you compare them to musicians from the Baroque period. And as for the metal thing, I saw the Anvil film the other night. At times funny, sad, and plain embarrassing, what it does is give false hope to metal bands pushing 40 who should have given up years ago, featuring idiots like this
 9.
Yeah I know very little about metal too. Learning though... Whatever brand of metal it is they pay at my gym to help the body builders get angry enough to lift 16 tons , I get to hear about 3 hours of it a week. The English language ones are all about kill kill kill, fighting battles in the Dungeons and Dragons way, my sword is bigger than yours and we will kick your head in. You will know us by the trail of the dead, etc.... The rest I assume to be in Swedish or German. The musical prowess is clear (especially the drummers amazing bass drum playing) but the music is largely interchangeable between tracks. When a melody breaks out it's quickly squashed. Mind you it's better than the misogynistic rap that gets played in between ...
you lucky b*st*rd! I am so jealous, I wish I could find a gym that played metal! I had to wear earplugs at my old gym because of the dire 'dance' music that was constantly on rotation.

 11. Another reason bands today don't sound as good is because we are used to listening to them on MP3's. As I'm sure you all know over 90% of the auditory information of a music recording is lost when compressed to MP3.
 12. Fender Bassman. nuff said. ok I'll say a bit more. Originally a lovely Bass amp but used by countless guitarists too and sounds great.
 13. Actually I got it wrong - it's not just a wooden neck, there's graphite involved too. The bendwell is kinda my own design because it doesn't run across the whole width of the neck. It looks nicer than the Status ones too
 14. Hi, I haven't got a trade but I'd like to see the pics
 15.
Yeah, should be fine - Is this on a wooden neck? The bendwell design on the Status basses is graphite of course, so the wood in that portion will have to be strengthened, as it's a very thin part of the neck.
yep wooden neck. It's a Shuker so I'm sure it will be fine
 16.
If memory serves, it's just over 1cm deep. The string tension is pretty high at that end anyway, so you don't end up bending that far.
thanks. The bendwell on my Shuker is going to be 8mm. Do you think that will be enough?
 17. Hi any Status King bass owners out there, who have the bendwell? How deep is it? ta McD
 18.
...Huh? I've absolutely no idea what you're talking about as I haven't mentioned anything about Britain or any other nation here. Unless the thing about 'starting fires' is a Springsteen quote...or something?
I think he's just saying the best basses are made on these shores. It's a compliment
 19.
Just a few questions about the LEDs? What the hell is a pulse function?

Basically, it'll make his bass look like a boy racer . Nah, it means they flash on and off fast, and he's making it so it'll progress up the fretboard.
yep, what M4L666 said
How does Jon mount the LEDs? Does he insert them prior to the fingerboard being glued? I'm in two minds about the brass surrounds on the fingerboard. I'm looking forward to seeing them in context on the completed guitar.
not actually sure about that I can ask him?
Anyway, I'm liking this build thread. I'm watching in anticipation. This is what custom is all about! Nice stuff.
cheers
 20.
Well, didn't have any great weather to get those pictures done I'm afraid... I'll get them up as soon as I have a free moment and the sun peeps out.
make sure you take some of the contours, especially the edge - where I am reliably informed the flip paint has come out really well!
 21. my custom build is due to what I want not being out there. So a monkey grip, bendwell, extra frets for drop D tuning, pulsating pink LED's, and an all in one ramp/pup cover/thumb rest, all on one bass. Conservative? http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=9022
 22. I play in an old school heavy metal band, so I like the old classic tone, bottomy but punchy through the low mids. For me using the 2x12's makes all the difference.
 23.
Have to ask the "usual questions" first ....
no worries
What kind of bass is it ?
Iceni Zoot. But, the neck has in the past had a new fret board (nice job, according to Mike Walsh of Iceni) and has had LED's removed. Both of these were before my time.
If you want to add releif (to make the neck bow slightly) then you need to loosen the truss rod. Are you saying that the nut is very loose and yet there is still no relief ?
before rehearsal earlier I gave a quarter turn to loosen - no effect. I gave probably 2 full turns before giving up. The truss rod is quite loose - it moves side to side - but doesn't turn without the key.
Have you left the bass overnight to allow it to settle after adjusting the rod ? Sometimes when adding relief it's necessary to apply a little pressure (carefully) to the neck. This would be done by holding the neck at the body join then pushing the top of the neck a couple of times - firmly, but not forcefully - just to loosen anything that was stuck.
haven't left it overnight, but I did try putting pressure on the neck - not the way you suggest though, I'll go do that now. ok done it, still no joy.
 24.
Yes. Now get your pics up!
ok then Tech Soundsystems 600w combo 2x10 on top, 2x12 underneath. Sub included in picture for scale purposes. Combo formerly belonged to Squarepusher, both have neo's and have been 'tweaked' by Mike Walsh of Icen and Zoot, when he owned the Bass Merchant.
