well I couldn't afford it, as in 5 weeks time I will be jobless and homeless, but I've always loved Hamer's since buying a Chaparral guitar in the early 90's, but it is now mine
It's also a good job I haven't quite got over the 80's
Gigged her last night. Lovely sound, plenty of low end, lots of adjustment to technique for finger style though.
hot and sweaty packed pub + massive lighting rig, so almost melted on stage. Cool gig though, punters yelled for an encore and it was my first with my new bass
was going through my email account and deleting messages to free up space, and saw Nic's email I still had where he'd sent me rough draft of his research paper
contouring is just as welcome
Pickups can be modded
Bridges can vary tone and playability alot
Pre-amps

Design aspects aesthetically.
Plenty to get on with
but they apply to bass playing and are not necessarily specific to pick playing.
Requirements for me for a bass that I'm going to play with a pick:
1. Unhindered access to all 24 frets on the neck. That means actually having 24 frets and no heel or neck/body joint before the 24th fret.
2. A comfortable bridge for palm-muting. No Fender-style screws sticking into my hand once I've got the action suitably low.
3. No sharp edges on the body where my forearm is going to go. Important for me because my arm action is far more aggressive playing with a pick than when I play finger style.
4. Looks great when I'm up on stage giving it my "rock god" pose!
I'll give you 2 & 3, although I sometimes palm mute with fingers and prefer a comfortable bridge.
how many custom mods are for pick players? Things like ramps are just for finger players, and the contouring of the body can be too as the arm is in a different position. My custom build has all sorts of things going on, that wouldn't be happening if I was a pick player, they wouldn't be needed or wanted.
I think that we should give it some time and hopefully the guys and gals working on it will get it right.

the mag has been going for a few years now, how much more time do they need? They have a captive audience, things should already be as right as they can be.
And I don't care if the Guardian has spelling mistakes and typo's too, that doesn't mean it's ok for BGM to have them.

I've edited it for you.
The bass I'm currently having built, has all the features I like from different basses, but all on the one bass with a few ideas of my own thrown in. So I couldn't buy anything similar without something being missing. These features are not just about playability, they are about the aesthetics too.
So it it worth the money? Well it is to me.
Could a cheaper bass do the job just as well? Not for me, but then again neither could a more expensive one.
Will the punters notice a difference between my bass and a cheaper one? Certainly aesthetically, tonally probably not.
Will I notice the difference? Hell yeah! And that to me is what it's all about.
one of those dodgy long haired types and a Basschat Moderator! Best stay well clear...
Nah obviously just joshing, I bought my pointy Hamer off him on Saturday, met up in a Bristol train station and had a chat before heading back to that London.
Top bass, top price, top bloke

I had the Dalek. A m-500 head into an 8T and 16B.
Awesome tone, it's all there, if anything there is too much tonal choice . I miss the limiter too.
I only got rid of it because it wouldn't fit in to my new car.
Assume that increasing the rate of decay will lead to a higher attack setting?
Just wondering what peoples preferences are and why.
I think on an amp I've never had a great compressor, but I used to love the limiter on my old PJB M-500, just one pot, simple and effective.
But in terms of fattening up the sound it has to be compression?

We're not far off, I'm hoping I'll get most of it together this weekend. All the 'making' is done and its just a case of assembly. I have to spray the headpiece but thats a quick job. If I get it all together this weekend then it should be ready for you in about 10 days from then, just so it has plenty of time to settle down and I can do any necessary adjustments to the setup.
so only 2 weeks to go
