1. I'm planning on buying a Boss BR - haven't decided which one, but probably the BR600 - but I'll probably buy online. Any advice on who to avoid and who does the best prices gratefully received. ta
  2.
Try imagining virtually any song without the Bass line and it falls flat. Yep, best job in the house.
tell that to The White Stripes
  3.
Got to disagree. I've tried a couple of 5's and apart from having to rethink playing across strings (I'm aware this would have become second nature), most of all I just couldn't get on with the neck width and/or narrower string spacing; you don't have that problem with the Kubicki. Admittedly you can only go down to D but in 95% of the songs that I've ever needed a lower tuning, D has been it! They may not be everyone's cup of tea (which is just as well) but they will be the ultimate bass to some people.
a BIG +1. I've got a 5 and a 6, and my experience is that at the moment the subtle difference in string spacing, affects things like slapping. Keeping it real with normal (sic) fingering works for me, and when I had mine it was the Eb that came in quite useful too.

Would anyone be interesting in doing something along the lines of a bass setup masterclass? I know it's something I'd find useful I'll be bringing what I have reliably been informed is the smallest 2x10 in the world. It used to belong to Squarepusher.
  5.
Walked off the front of the stage in a pea-souper of dry ice..... 4 foot drop. How about that for a clanger.
ouch!
  6. Get it wrong once, it's a mistake. Get it wrong twice, it's jazz
  7. After a lifetime of lying, cheating, and ripping people off, Andrew Preston of Andy's Music has gone bankrupt. The shop formerly on Denmark Street is no more.
  8.
IIRC didn't John Taylor of the Duranies play/record with these!
yep!
  9. I've had 2, a Fender Custom Shop, and a regular Phil Kubicki. Of the 2, the Fender Custom shop had the better electronics (sorry TPJ) and was tidier inside. The drop D is an awesome idea, meaning the notes on the fretboard stay the same (unlike with a hipshot) plus you still get the E and Eb. Trouble is, the spring in the mechanism that frets at the nut, tends to lose some of its tension over the years resulting in a nasty fretbuzz type sound, even when playing other notes on the same string. Only single balled strings are needed, which is good, but trying to re-string is a pain, as some kind of ratchet (that I never had) is needed to tighten the bridge, so the fine tuners can do their thing. All the sounds are there, passive and active, various filters cutting and boosting, and coil tap options. And if you like the jazz type neck (like me) the playability is fantastic and well balanced, if a little heavy. I found recording worked best from passive, live full on active. Hope this helps.
  10. bargain! what's the saying - if it looks too good to be true, it probably is? hope is the curse of the human classes.
Did I see you getting out of a little red car carrying a Markbass 2x10 late one night? I was across the road parking my car thinking "I bet he's on basschat!".
LOL No, not me. I spend a lot of time in S London but don't live there. Next time you see the dude, 'ave a word!
  12. no, but I've used my PJB M-500 head with other cabs. The impedance of PJB cabs is usually quite high, the 8T and 16B together rate at 5.3 ohms, so depending on how your amp is rated you may not be running at it's full output.

  17.
Crossing strings all of a sudden becomes really easy using the technique. I'll have to knock up a vid or something.
yep a vid would be cool. Keep us informed.
  18. I had a bass with a neck like that once. I think it had been left in the sun.
  19. Is the DOD chorus the FX62? Ta.
  20.
I dabbled with the three-finger playing thing for quite a few years, and still use it on occasion for playing triplets, but I worked out a new technique that works better for me, while providing the agility of three-finger picking and allowing me to mostly do away with using a pick for the tunes I do that needed that sound. It's pretty much a rock-optimised version of the Garrison fingers-plus-thumb technique, except using only two fingers in addition to my thumb, and incorporating the edge of my thumbnail for a pick-like sound. Basically, I nail the "one" using the thumb/thumbnail (depending on the sound I'm going for), then the 2,3,4 (or 2,3 or whatever) with the fingers in alternating fashion, and using the thumb to lead when crossing strings. It's not dissimilar to classical guitar technique, in a lot of ways. Makes for quite a powerful technique that has a lot of versatility as far as speed, tones and muting are concerned. I'm still working on it, but I can see it almost replacing all my other finger techniques once I'm comfortable with it for everything, as it's much more efficient.
sounds interesting. Is it similar to 'chicken picking'?

  22. this is the like the one that got the 5 star review in Bass Guitarist Magazine, but with bigger speakers 8T & 16B. Awesome head, M-500, tone shaping is immense, it's all there in the parametric and graphic eq's. IMO does the Ampeg thing better than Ampegs! (the first time I took it to a rehearsal of my classic rock band, the guitarist said "whatever you've done to your sound, don't change it. That sounds f*ck1n awesome!". It looks exactly like this, and is in dead good nick. It's currently at the Bass Merchant in Witham 01376 500820, so have a go if you're in that neck of the woods. M500 720w @ 2ohms 12 band graphic £949.00 8T 800w 8x5" drivers £599.00 16B 1600w 16x5" drivers £1,059.00 are the new prices from the Bass Gallery, but I'm after £1,399.00 for the whole lot. I'm reluctantly parting with it because it doesn't really fit into my saloon car that well (as anyone who helped me at the Bass Bashes will know!) and I've just put a deposit down on the worlds smallest 2x10 combo.
