I had a bass with a neck like that once. I think it had been left in the sun.
I dabbled with the three-finger playing thing for quite a few years, and still use it on occasion for playing triplets, but I worked out a new technique that works better for me, while providing the agility of three-finger picking and allowing me to mostly do away with using a pick for the tunes I do that needed that sound. It's pretty much a rock-optimised version of the Garrison fingers-plus-thumb technique, except using only two fingers in addition to my thumb, and incorporating the edge of my thumbnail for a pick-like sound. Basically, I nail the "one" using the thumb/thumbnail (depending on the sound I'm going for), then the 2,3,4 (or 2,3 or whatever) with the fingers in alternating fashion, and using the thumb to lead when crossing strings. It's not dissimilar to classical guitar technique, in a lot of ways. Makes for quite a powerful technique that has a lot of versatility as far as speed, tones and muting are concerned. I'm still working on it, but I can see it almost replacing all my other finger techniques once I'm comfortable with it for everything, as it's much more efficient.
sounds interesting. Is it similar to 'chicken picking'?

this is the like the one that got the 5 star review in Bass Guitarist Magazine, but with bigger speakers 8T & 16B. Awesome head, M-500, tone shaping is immense, it's all there in the parametric and graphic eq's. IMO does the Ampeg thing better than Ampegs! (the first time I took it to a rehearsal of my classic rock band, the guitarist said "whatever you've done to your sound, don't change it. That sounds f*ck1n awesome!". It looks exactly like this, and is in dead good nick. It's currently at the Bass Merchant in Witham 01376 500820, so have a go if you're in that neck of the woods. M500 720w @ 2ohms 12 band graphic £949.00 8T 800w 8x5" drivers £599.00 16B 1600w 16x5" drivers £1,059.00 are the new prices from the Bass Gallery, but I'm after £1,399.00 for the whole lot. I'm reluctantly parting with it because it doesn't really fit into my saloon car that well (as anyone who helped me at the Bass Bashes will know!) and I've just put a deposit down on the worlds smallest 2x10 combo.
I wear Doc Proplugs, non-vented, for every single gig that i do! Including all gigs and other 'loud' events that i go to. I even put them in once when i went to a bowling alley, it was ridiculously loud lol. They form part of my 'every morning pickup', Keys, Wallet, Phone, Plugs I'm aiming to have a hearing test soon and get some fitted plugs soon though Si
I have a little case that is attached to my keyring. One less thing to remember!

nope you are all wrong Hands down the best bass line ever is Earthquake by Graham Central Station, played by the one and only Larry. You want the funk? Damn it's funky! You want the rock? Man it ROCKS! You want slap? It's Larry baby! Have a listen and you will fall in love with the bass all over again...

BTW apart from being a customer at the Bass Merchant, I have no connection or endorsement with Zoot Basses. I just think that price for a bass of that quality is amazing.
-
Has anyone seen the June issue of Guitarist? No bear with me, because I've just seen it and they have a review (5 stars) of the Zoot Performer Pro. Handmade in the UK and only £985.00! Bugger!

I've got the 5 string version. V nice, but I may have to upgade the pups at some point if I'm gonna keep it long term.

not even the pretence of putting some strings on!
If you mean Unskinny Bop, then it was by Poison. And i agree, it's boring, unimaginative and thoroughly carp
but to be fair, the bass line is pretty much just a pedal throughout. You might not like the song, but you can't really say it's the worst bassline ever because of that.
During my latest bout of GAS I was thinking about either getting 5 stringer or maybe even just stringing a 4 string bass B-E-A-D ( as I don't tend to use the G string too much anyway...oooer missus!!) Is the latter a really bad idea (i.e. likely to knacker the neck?) or would it just need some careful set up and truss rod adjustment. Please let me know your thoughts Thanks Stu
I asked something similar on the last incarnation of this site. My MM Sub is now strung B-E-A-D with no probs, but I had to have the nut reshaped, and the B bridge saddle slightly grinded.
Thanks for the Herbie Flowers lead, after a bit of research it looks like it was him.....cheers
In which case I will wear the cone shaped hat with a D, and sit in the corner...

Is it bass? I thought it was keyboard?

I love this thread! it would be interesting to see what the most popular makes/models are, and what we all started on, but I don't think anyone will be ar53d to go through this thread and put them all in some kind of spreadsheet. I know I can't
Once you go three fingered you'll never go back. Well, I won't anyway. Two just seems so inefficient.

I use it all the time, even for slow things. For me there's no real disadvantage, but I get so much more agility from it. I play ring-middle-index all the time.
yeah me too now. Once you've managed to get even fingering going on (or a decent compressor ) the ring finger becomes more involved. When I first started bass I was a classical guitarist and was using all fingers to pick with, but because I had to have long nails I had to use a pick for bass. 20 years later and I'm relearning the same techniques, minus the guitar.

could be wrong, but didn't the guy with Screaming Lord Sutch wear one in the 60's?

I just wanted to share with the collective: I've recently joined a new band, and one of the songs calls for demi-semi quavers throughout a lot of it. I'm a finger player and TBH was struggling with it a bit and consequently didn't like or enjoy playing it. I had been using just index and middle, but I started to involve the ring finger too, and after a lot of practice I've nailed it. The 8 notes per beat are played r-m-i-r-m-i-r-m and the following note -i- The most difficult part was avoiding the accents from the ring finger, when playing the 4th and 7th demi-semi quavers. Anyway now I'm comfortable with it, I actually quite like playing it now If anyone is interested pm me an email and I'll send you the demo I had to learn, so you can hear what I mean.

Just lately I've been coming around to the train of thought, that a bass is just a tool to do a job. Obviously choose the right tool for the right job, but a tool nonetheless. I've always had to sell to be able to buy and upgrade, and I think I have some nice basses, but I think it's because I sold the bass that I would never sell, to help fund my custom build. I'm not totally devoid of emotion for my basses, but it's quite liberating in a way not to be beholden to brand loyalty or sentiment. Having said all that, when I get my custom Shuker (designed to my exact spec) I'll probably have a change of mind
