1. Like a small stainless steel dish bouncing on a tiled floor.
2.
ooooooo i'd love to crank those in a marshall!
Yeh, Marshall will be great, enough space too, going to try them in my bro's Jtm 45 when I get chance, but so like to try them in a Burman, but not enough room though. Think this is a good excuse to build an amp around them
3.
cheers
cheers..
4. Rustic oven chips even!, could it be a custom shop???. Isn't it great when your Uncle is on your wavelength, just need an amp with big enough bottle spacing
5. Superb stuff, leaving most of us wishing we could go that one step further than replacing a resistor.
6.
Just pray that statement never gets quoted out of context...
and it's not as if I've been on the Beer yet!
7. If you can get close enough give it a big suck kiss, a vacuum cleaner could pull the whole coil out. I have used Duct tape in the past as this is nice and sticky.
8.
In unison I can understand - just means they're working very hard & might shorten their lifespan. It's the idea of just one doing it that makes me think something might be up. Pete.
Yes, Its got to be one of the Valves is just not man enough for the job anymore and its showing in his actions.
9.
I do tend to agree with that actually. I tend to go for the more Hi-Fi sound that my MarkBass amp gives me, however saying that, I do love the aggresive sound of valve's.
I think you may be confusing Valve amps with aggresive valve sounds. Most of the best HiFi amps are Valve driven and go clean all the way, a Quatra or most other Valve Bass amps will go very very loud without distorting, all depends how you set them up, but they will be warm and have feeling unlike most Trans that can be made to sound more harsh or tinny.
10. A Twinvalve sold recently on evilbay for £300, I paid £325 for mine, I haven't seen a Quatra Valve sell for less than £500, it won't be in the shop long whatever price they put on it.
11. Thinking about it when our Guitarist uses my Burman, it does the same thing especially with a tube screamer, although all 4 EL34's go blue in unison.
12. Sounds like the valve is tired and is not coping with the demand, if the bias though is to high it would glow red hot in the very centre of the valve with no bass plugged in. As a quick test see if it reacts the same in another valve position.
13.
In my opinion an SVT Pro is not what Ampeg are famous for . Really the SVT Classic or Classic VR is the amp to have, the V4BH is also a nice head.
Unless you find an original early 70's one then the Classic and the VR just become, well nearly.
14.
Hello Wayne, I was in Music Ground in Leeds half an hour ago and they had sent your '74 Jazz to the Denmark Street branch yesterday.
Hmm, send a bass to your other branch when you clearly have a guy seriously into the bass??, or was it drawing to much attention from Basschat with some of us popping in to check it out for Wayne!, would I be wrong to think it may be a little more authentic when it goes back on the wall.
15. Don't get the pup's re wound, just pull them out and put them to one side, the value of these pup's are far more even if one side is going down. Plus if you do sell the bass pop them back in and no one will know they need a rewind, its an old Fender!. Buy a SPD1 and use this instead, they'll breath some new life into the bass with lots of smooth tones. Got mine off Ebay USA about £48 to my door.
16. On a Badass the saddles sit in a slot, so if one of the adjusting screws is not sitting on the bridge ie not supporting the saddle, the saddle can appear to be sitting ok but it won't be sonically linked as it should be, try very small turns of each screw to see if they raise and lower the saddles, and if all's well I think get a new string.
17. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...andles&st=0 For sale in Jan readvertised in Sept and sold for £1250, IMO this was a Funking bargain. Although this minter with unusual/rare colour was initially asking £1500, it makes interesting reading how some people would bad value a Bass like this.
18. As said before your amp is going to be the main factor, grinding valves will work well. But before all this you should try a set of Rotosound rounds RS66 on your existing bass and prepare to loose some skin and lots of fret wear.
19.
Here's one
Nothing quite like Black Nylons or is that a leather Cat suit. With foam damper too.
20. Clarky, you could do what Ive just done and that's to buy two new CTS pots and a new orange drop cap ( on ebay 3.95 and 99p) and take the pot apart and replace the track only, I'll do a thread on it sometime soon.
21. A few questions, how is it for scratches/dings and fretwear. At the nut area on either side are there any cracks in the varnish around the fingerboard/binding to the neck, pic's?. Does it have a case. Can you get close up pic's of the pickups. Post cost to UK. Scratchplate looks non original and do you have the bridge damping parts. Cheers, Sean.
22.
Jamerson flats are like bridge cables. Chromes have pretty high tension too. If it's the tension you didn't get on with, try out some Pyramid Golds (medium tension) or TI jazz flats (floppy like spaghetti). For old-skool fingerstyle thump like on the old Motown and funk records, a P with flats is IT. I want another (hopefully 5 string) P for more agressive rock stuff though.
Mine has TI flats but i'm not sure which type (E is Big and rest are quite normal gauge) but they sound oooo smoooth and then I have rotosound RS77 on my EB3 and they are like rounds the way they ring.
23.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I would never buy a bass from anywhere that I wasn't able to see and try first. I bought my Jaydee from a guy on here, I drove all the way from Birmingham to Kilmarnock to collect it. He was a really cool guy and the bass was as he descibed it, but I didn't know that until I'd met him, and seen the bass.
I'm going to drive from Hereford to Brighton Gak to try and get the best Geddy I can find from the bunch they have, trying a bass first will give you an idea if you have picked up a piece of Bog oak and to avoid it.
24. Ok, I'm really thinking of just going ahead and buying a new one, but are any of the above mod's now current in the Bass? be nice to get the latest version. Gak have them for £669 all in, but are these the current models, one would hope as they must sell quite a few. Can you visit Gak and try basses, as I am a firm believer in trying and selecting a nice sounding un amplified guitar, having had possibly the most dead sounding 73 Jazz in existance.
25.
Yeah, it's reasonable, so you won't get it. Start off by asking for a full refund. If he doesn't want to do that, then either take it up with eBay or negotiate down to a refund for a setup. Like £50 minimum. Don't forget that he sold you a bass that was less valuable than he advertised, and a pro setup isn't going to fix the dents in the neck. I actually think you should be a bit of a hardass about this one, because what he did wasn't acceptable.
Unless the ebayer is reading this thread, if so, then you may need to go round his house.
