Having never even played one, I thought I would try, so I bought one off Beerdragon, a little bit of tweaking and hey! that's a great sounding Bass, initially found nice mellows with a hint of growl, but its early days and I'm enjoying finding out more of what's on tap. Having spent the last 30 years with a 4001, buying it because of wanting to be different, thought a Precision was a bit like an Escort, everbodys got one so I'll pass, bit silly really. So just got myself a SPD1 from the US for £40 new and this will be fitted today, all good fun.
I'd also like to think that I'd think about the ethics behind my bass, but to be perfectly honest, it really doesn't cross my mind...and considering some of the exotic woods found in my (and many, many others) collections, I doubt if many people check for certificates to make sure the cocobolo/wenge/zebrawood/mahogany/wtf are sourced for sustainable, ethical forests! A damn shame I know, but I doubt it's gonna stop any time soon
I did initially think of the custom makers with their extra exotic and rare named woods, but the consumption turnover of all these makers can't even come close to Gibson and Fender, its got to be massive volumes for them, not to mention MIM, CIJ and Epiphone.
This is the only video I know of Jamerson - here playing live with Marvin Gaye. Enjoy!
OMG think i've been listening to the wrong music all these years...... Is James using the side of his thumb to dampen the strings?

Sounds like most of the gear is being pushed hard or is worn out, especially the speakers, as the tone just isn't coming through, I think it may seem an easy sound to get, but to get that amount of mud even from an EB3, could be a Jazz with really flat flats.
Withdrawn, gave it a good play today, plus installed a set of Pyramid Golds, and boy it sounds lovely I seem to have too many basses again (not for the first time I'll admit) Chris
Cool, glad to hear it, if you put some soul into the making and tweaking of the thing, then it becomes more You and i'm sure its only going to grow on you, perhaps not right for all tracks but it may go right in time. -

I think the guy who designed that may have had elephantitis.
has it been serviced recently? also try boosting hte lower mids as apposed to the highs
+1, if the valves are funked then it will really drag its heels, although if the bias is set too low (cool) then it will become thinner and brighter
Not a fan of the LK - although I really like the checked binding & star position markers - in fact everything except the carving! It looks like it belongs on the front of your nan's sideboard. If you can neither find nor afford the now staggeringly rare original, those devious Chinese (or wherever) copyists have had a go: Unfortunately they left off the best bit (the binding) & replaced it with what looks queasily like a knotted scroll of dog faeces. J.
that binding makes it look more like the sideboards made in India, my friend imports for peoples nan's..
You don't suppose that belt might scratch the back of his Ricky's ...
Would be a sure way to authenticate when one ''Owned By Lemmy'' turns up on ebay. Those frets are serious, 3 times the width of 4001's.

Ric £2699... at least have a pic of the correct bass!

I think when technical errors like this come up most could get them corrected, but when they get technical in Grammar, they may never get there... -
Finding the bridge PUP is louder than the neck PUP. It's not problematic, but is evident perhaps to the same degree as retro-installed J-PUPs tended to be quieter than original P-PUPs in 70's Precisions. Is this normal with Rics?
It is, not sure if its the windings too but the main problem is getting the neck pup high enough, on mine it was so vague i really couldn't use it, it just sounded pant's. The problem is the small screws in the pup that sandwich it together, they hit the scratch plate, I very very carefully drilled 4 relief holes from behind without breaking through, the pup sits flush upto the underside of the scratchplate now raising the pups height, it now sounds full and warm.
Couldn't get the action low enough due to the massive base plate. Went back to the Gotoh 203 - bent tin done properly
sounds like you fitted a ''1'' on a Fender?, they built the ''2'' for Fenders because of this.
THEY ARE AMAZING. They increase your sustain HUGELY, they look AMAZING, you dont get saddle wobble like the bent bit of tin Fender used, I bought one for my Jazz and its made SO MUCH diffrence its untrue. Reality: I only noticed the a slight dif on the sustain, but that might just be me thinking it helps loads rathen then it doing loads. It was a MIM Jazz, I havent noticed much dif changing to a BA on more expensive basses. They do look good. Result: Get one if you like the look of them. they are nice things and it does stop the saddles moving.
They do on a Fender, but put one on a Ric and its not untrue its night and day.

Awesome, cracking job and you really got it finished quickly, so nice when a plan comes together.
No kidding? Do you have one that has ridiculously fat sound, very low and warm midrange and not so bright top end?
That sounds like an Mullard ecc83......
Figure which speakers are in each. Once the box is good quality, fairly sure sealed 8x10s are much of a muchness. Unless the Marshall is not 4 compartments like the ampeg. Marshall 8x10 I've heard kinda sucked, didn't go lower than a beefy guitar cab.
+1, my Trace 810 don't sound as good as my 71 Ampeg did because of the speakers, but my 410 reflex knocks the Trace into a Cocked Hat for an even spread of frequencies and a low that hits you in the gut like a corkscrew and pulls, an 810 is an 810, pretty limited....

There really is no substitute for shear volume to get that grinding dirt sound, but nowadays its just off limits for most of us. A JTM45 Marshall guitar amp turned up full with a Ric, no pedals, just pure nasty. I think Steve-norris had a Trace V4 for sale recently, this will go really really nasty dirty.
