It's a great line, and Illsley is a GREAT player. The Live at the BBC version is really agressive and growly. As it happens, I saw MK on his last tour, and he did Sultans... it was awful.. the band (who were crap-hot on everything else) missed the point of the groove entirely.
Old grey whistle test, just watched it , wow thats a great bass sound. A few years ago, I was down at Classic Le Mans helping out a friend with his team, in the large trailer park one eve we had the most awesome privilege to hear Mark on acoustic guitar n vocals and Nick Mason on cutlery drums entertaining after a bbque,

I think that some, me for sure would take offence at being told to just back up and provide steady with no frills, but yes, he has risen above and shown how clever he really is. If that's the Precision I'm starting to gas for one.

Listening to Sultans of Swing and thinking the Bass isn't that outstanding, or is it, it really does work, perfectly compliments Mark Knopfler's guitar, just great, must be flats for that lovely deep and short note, think its a WAL.
Well, I do play through a Marshall JMP bass combo and asides from a slight lack of low end it sounds very good no matter what's played through it. That's the point though, it can make a not very good bass sound good, whereas I'm interested in how to make a bass sound better before it gets to the amp. I used to have a JTM 45 - best amp I ever owned but weighed a ton!
There are so many factors to the sound from the bass and the sound once it reaches the speakers, right from the start when you pluck the string it starts sounding worse at each step on its way to the speaker, so its down to the components and making these less restrictive, wood, bridge, tuners etc, as you can only try to make it sound less worse. I love my 4001 with its clean maple, its so clanky even with no strings on.
Unless it's one like this! Alex
Wow, just read some reviews, this is HiFi for bass, (which is what they had back in the 50's and 60's anyway) sounds like what every other amp maker should be thinking nowadays.
Thanks for the replies. I had a play through my old amp yesterday and was reminded why I like it so much. I think I'll go the headphones route.
I have been playing through my brothers Marshall JTM 45, and each time I am just amazed at how pure and uncluttered it sounds, you strike a note and bang! its there at the speakers!, just travelling through a few valves and the odd resistor effortlessly turned into actual crisp but smooth sound. Something a circuit board could only dream of.

Those white tips on sliders: are they sold somewhere?
SS73 replied to 1976fenderhead's topic in Repairs and Technical
Do you mean the white ones Trace used on their eq sliders, these are quite small. As far as I know Trace bought on mass from RS. Thing with RS is they have so much stuff it diff to find it, I was just searching for some caps for volume knobs with a little white line on, took ages but they did have them. -
Thinking realistically, an SVT3Pro and a 410 (but which one?) could be the way for me to go.
I used to own an early 70's SVT and it did sound the B.....ks in fact better, usual thing I should have kept it. From the mid 70's they changed and kept on changing ( much like any other amp makers). Try any other newer Ampeg and ''that'' sound will be hard to get.

I have wondered too on the OLP, so if we forget the Electrical side and hardware cos you could modify these anyway, and look at the body/neck, whats the difference and really does finish matter, so is it the wood? or wood quality? that sets them apart.
reminds me of this I saw at a Rush tribute band. Its a Rick with a special made rick guitar bolted to it.
Are you sure that's not Geddy, he's even got the same pump's!!.

FREE Live, fantastic, may not be sonically that good but its so untouched even Paul's guitar lead keeps cutting out on All Right Now Slightly off topic, anybody remember the live shot from the front row looking back through the crowd at a DIO concert, it was actually a Rush concert, they just whited out the banners..

Flat Eric
Wow, thats cool, never new they made a Ric 4080 copy, its got straight through necks too....

Replacing a fan & a pre amp valve in an old Trace. HELP !
SS73 replied to weepaul's topic in Repairs and Technical
The valve will be a straight swap, as long as its the same type that is. Google the valve type and try find a recommended brand, the chinese ones are cheap and sound pants. -

When I started playing bass in the 70's, it was my 4001, it was because Geddy Lee used one, the sound and they looked the best!, now, its still that 4001.

In our practice room I run a Marshall 69 JTM 45, 50 watts into an 810 cab at 4 ohms, there is absolutely no way anyone could stay in the room at over volume 5 and its a big room too. An 810 is not too much for a 50 watt'r. Why not fix the svt.

Just finished fixing my V8, first problem was that the compressor light wouldn't go out, it worked fine though, so I replaced the Cap and an N channel J Fet in the circuit, this fixed the problem. Next was a couple of crackly pot's that just wouldn't clean, first was the Gain 2 level pot, this had a bad spot 2/3 in where all signal was lost but an extreme nasal mid. Next one was the main volume pot, the track was funked around 1-2 position. I replaced these with high quality ALPS Blue Velvet pot's, which have really nice tracks and very fine brushes and perfect for the main volume as fine adjustment is needed low down. They were a bit of a sod to modify but now they're in. Mine didn't have a shroud for the first Ecc83, like the later V8's, so this was fitted too which will help with microphonics etc. What I found with the main volume pot was, (and apologies if I go on about it, but it really wound me up) it had been replaced before, but the monkey that did it, put the wrong pot in, broke parts of the circuit board too and filed the chassis hole larger to get the thing in because he soldered it in skew C... .It even looked like an old pot too, as the tangs were showing that the back had been off the pot. Anyway, thought you might like the post, going to get the thing fired up now.
This is the best stuff you can get, add the DeoxIT Gold for lasting protection http://www.stoneaudio.co.uk/
Most people would call this ''snake oil'', but I think it actually works, it apparently fills the microscopic pores in contact surfaces making them one, good for jack sockets etc, not sure its meant for Pot's though.
