If the speaker didn't move back to the centrepoint quickly enough then the note would go out of tune. It has to move at the input frequency - that determines the speed. One of the key factors which differentiates ported and sealed cabs is that properly designed sealed cabs use speakers which have weaker motors and looser suspension so they rely on the back pressure to damp their movement, whilst a well designed ported cab uses speakers with stronger motors and tighter suspension so the damping comes from the driver itself. Alex
Ok that makes sense, but because the ported cab is producing more sound and moving more air, would this not affect speed.

It's in Quebec, but that's cheap. Anybody got a container? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...ME:B:SS:GB:1123

thanks for the quick responses, informed stuff I can see this has been debated before. The original post came from one of those evenings where boredom overrides logic and you hunt for something. But that something was the 410 did sound different and the 410 did seem slower than the 810, the 410 has been complimented many times on its room filling sound with cutting treble and smooth lows. The 810 makes me think I'm becoming more guitar like!! heaven forbid!! no its a different sound altogether and I do feel its faster, inside its 4 x 210's sat on top of each other, so if you strike a note with a sealed 10 the speaker moves back until it can't compress the air in the cab further then that compression drives the speaker cone back ready for the next signal, with a ported cab it will travel back further creating more sound and pushing more air but on its way back there's not much help from compression so its just the spring in the material to get it back so it must be slower surely.

Just playing round with kit n comparing speaker cabs and thinking out loud, so I'm playing through my Trace 810 ( which has no porting at all, really from a cab designers view its basic and not very clever with no baffle material, nothing, just bare mdf and good speakers) now drag in the Hartley Thompson 410 (specially designed reflex porting, nice materials etc) from the garage :- The 410 has def a lower freq range and goes really low, nice tone and quite pure, but its slow. The 810 is def more middle the kind of middy growl just like the old SVT 810's , but its so fast and really responsive. Now I'm not sure how all these things change when your 30ft back from the stage but I'm loving this fast sound from the 810 n could live with the drop in definition too, just to get that middy growl, could be wrong but all 6 string lead guitar cabs are non ported too, must be a reason. Just thought I'd throw this in and see where it goes.
Geddy wasn't impressed with the tuners on his signature model apparently and there has been talk of them changing for a few years. I've had two GL basses and they had identical looking tuners but one set behaved a bit better than the other set. Funnily enough, I kept the bass with the iffy set and they're absolutely fine now. I think they were talking about a 'satin' finish on the new production necks, rather than completely open, but I haven't seen any with this yet. Seems that's the feel Geddy prefers these days.
Funny really that Fender have been happy with the tuners for all these years. Just noticed your bass collection, WOW all my fav stuff...
-
Just been looking at http://www.bassplayer.tv/ and the interviews with Geddy ''Bass Collection''. He there mentions that his new Basses will have new tuners, (seem to remember he always fitted Schallers to the Ric's.) is this true?. Also he mentions the sanded down unlacquered neck finish, this too?, wouldn't think its a very good idea here in old soggy uk though.

Fixing crackley pots on an Eden Metro Combo
SS73 replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Repairs and Technical
Go easy on the amount of juice as over doing this will mix with the grease held in the cap of the pot and get on the track and especially when you use Isopropol. If the problem comes back though in a few months then its time to change the pot. -
Horrid tone though.
I think this is quite a desirable sound though , glad I'm from a different planet.

Your Favourite Bass Player's Rig/Style File;
SS73 replied to Bo Millward's topic in General Discussion
Geddy Lee, ''A Farewell To Kings'' and before, SVT SVT and most probably SVT , grinding tone from sledge hammer like fingers. ''All the worlds a stage'' ''Lakeside Park'' gritty musical flowing soul. Pure Funking Genius. -
Bid to £1382.00 Well that's an honest price, about what I paid for mine with the 810 last year, was thinking I've got myself a real investment here, but then I never want to sell mine on anyway.

They hung people for not much more in my neck of the woods.

http://www.watfordvalves.com/reports.asp Here is a report from Watford valves on various types, go to 6550/KT88 it shows most but not the Gold Lions, although he does stock these but they're £10 more than the JJ's. I have heard people say the Gold Lions are more HiFi, but I have the original GEC KT88's in the V8 and it sounds more like heaven than HiFi.
-
Nice one Sean, all's well then, your happy and the guys happy and lets hope someone gets one of the V8's on ebay for an honest bid price, I suspect though that the english one may get withdrawn.
-
Hmmm, seems things have changed , on the english listing anyway. Can anyone explain how this can happen, has the top bidder retracted his bid, but the underbidder must also do the same to get the bids down this low?, unless as I thought it had been the seller bidding up.
-
I think that if the person that had put his bid in from the start at 2k, and has had it exposed/extracted so soon as this would be pretty funked off by the whole thing, but as another has appeared on ebay, I would sit back now and let the sellers stew maybe not even bid again and contact the sellers after. I could be completely wrong though and they both sell for over 2k....

Another one, money comes before soul, ebay does pull out the rare stuff, should be another one up soon then. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...ME:B:SS:GB:1123
SVTs never used Jensens. The first models were loaded with CTS. In the early 70's an engineer from CTS started Eminence, and one of his first projects was to clone the CTS driver and get the Ampeg contract. Over the decades the Eminence driver has gone through a number of changes, morphing from what was originally a guitar driver to one designed for bass, which explains the changes in tone over the last 40 years. There are a few sources for replacements, including Ampeg, Weber, Jensen and Electro-Harmonix. The problem lies in knowing which will come closest to the tone of any particular vintage SVT, so most owners choose to do a recone rather than replacement.
oops, well it was a long time ago, or perhaps my 810 had 8 replacement Jensons in it.
-
I did use an Ampeg 810 from about 72, it had all the original Jenson drivers and was superb for a couple of years then i had to replace a few and opted for the trace 32 ohm 80w, it just never sounded the same after. Now i see the original Jensons fetch serious money, ironically i have an 810 trace cab now, loved that SVT 810.
-
Hmmm, bid history shows ''bidder id hidden/ private auction'' so who knows. If, as many would be totally into this auction, super rare and has the cabs etc, one would bid in the last 1/2 hour and just be a watcher till the fall. Ebay is such a Good/Bad place for super rare stuff so either way.

Feel like I'm stating the obvious here, for sure you guys have seen it? or were you perhaps hoping to snap it up for good price? well I was, but I looked this morning and its already up to £2k with 8 days to go!!!!!!!!!!. Could never understand why people bid so early. Its a very late one 401 4th quarter of 2001 and has the oval plate, very little info, think the seller knows its going to sell. Ok, this is what I have heard about Geddy's Jazz, the original Bass he uses has a bridge pup that is breaking down, some of the lower freq are being cut due to this, so very similar to a 4001 but this has a capacitor to get the same effect and why he liked that particular Jazz over other basses. I am not sure if the reissue designers were aware of this when they started to produce the Geddy Jazz, if they were, there will be a cap in between the pup and the jack or they may have modded the pup's internally. Aggressive, possibly but certainly more gritty like a 4001, if they have made them to sound like Geddy's original.

As for valves, Svetlana / 'winged C' KT 88's have been recommended by Derek at watford valves but are very expensive. Is it worth the extra expense over valves like JJ's?
I have heard the ''winged C'' is a very nice valve and really sings when wound up, which I think is the thing with these higher quality valves, they just get better as the volume rises almost like they need or like to be pushed. What did Derek say about the Golden lions? were they biased towards HiFi use?, and how much were the "Winged C's"
Quite right about the stella our local shop has very few beers in the fridge, when working on electrical equipment I recommend Amstel, cold. Would you spend the extra on the golden lion re-issues over the jj's ?
I would say yes go for it, thinking I would need 8 though , I just did a google search on the reissue gold lion and found some hifi guy's forum chat, ( jeeze I thought I was an anorak, anyway) it makes interesting reading, I would also give the guy at watford valves a ring, he's into his amps both hifi and guitar, so he's not just a salesman. If they are as good or near as the original GEC KT88 then they have to be a good buy, although but my brother has just put some JJ 6L6 in his Peavy 5150 and wound up they sound awesome and real real smooth. I do find a good scotch mixed with solder fumes really hits the spot...
Some pic's for those of you who like these things...The empty holes at FS1 & FS2 are where the fuse holders should be. While the construction is not in the 'Hand wired point to point' league but it's a fair bit tidier than some other high end amps, in particular my EA iAmp 350 which had ribbon cables solders straight to the board.
Steve, great pic's but I can't believe you were drinking Stella and working on your amp, I allways though Stella was only for fighting. On the valve front go to Watford valves web site and hit the reports section, in there is a test on all the main KT88's, the Tesla JJ rates highly. I have GEC KT88's in the V8 at the moment, these are stupid prices now and NOS unheard of, but they just sound awesome, I also have a set of GE 6550's these have loads of grunt and make the amp growl more, but with the 4001 it adds this anyway so I'm on the GEC's at moment which are so smooooooth. The Ruby's I took out were not even close to the above, to refit them would be a very bitter pill to swallow.
