Going deeper into R.I.C. and Mr Hall, I have wondered why after making Tribute versions of his instruments, that Geddy Lee who was probably the most iconic association with Rickenbacker, never had his version done, oh hang on my mistake, he modified his with non Ric parts, a proper bridge and decent tuners, silly me.

Status bass on ebay, shill bidding?
SS73 replied to robocorpse's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Classic example, trouble is most other innocents will have completely no idea whats going on, the whole fu....g thing gets me and ebay have no real reason to stop it, why should they?. -
Obviously don't go mad, but you should be fine, they will break in. You could have the bias checked over after a month or so, as this initial period is when they can move. As for the pre's they go on for ages, only replace if you want to put some higher quality versions or nos types. Valves are very hardy things and sometimes get replaced when they're fine, my SVT still has all it's original valves from when it was new 40 years ago, although valves of this period were at the peak of their quality.
Source of inspiration I read a forum where a chap had attempted to build his own 4005 from scratch. (see below) http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=283322 One of the last posts he made stated that he had bought a 4003 and condsidered selling the project as a job lot. I tracked down one of his buddies who told me he'd emegrated but told me I could contact him on facebook. I'm betting that alot of people tried this and so I never got a reply. I seriously considered buying that beat up old 4005 thats been on ebay for £2300 for about 8 months... but that would be just be silly, it's knackered and way over priced. Ok, well he's not hanging around then, I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking when can we join the queue.

Great, will be watching. Do you know how hollow the hollow is, was it just one side, looking at others there seem to be double binding versions too. This guy went the whole hog it seems.....
Wiring in American amps upsets me. This has a couple of tacked in wires what cross over loads of the board, but its all preamp wiring there, so I dunno if they will be picking up interference, unless it is to do with the heater supplies or something. I was thinking of replacing a re-routing those first as it just looks like a terrible job.
On an SVT the Pre is in an enclosed unit up top with the pot's/ inputs etc. It's a 1970 and this is the power board that runs a 12DW7 and two 12BH7's. Tis a tad messy, but they must have got something right, endurance and one of the best sounding bass amps ever made.

Mine too Ampeg SVT, If the Earth Star has been messed with, I had a very noisy amp years ago and I seem to remember that the central earth post was not actually earthed to the chassis a new spring washer and some emery was all it needed.

Why you should learn how to use your camera
SS73 replied to Happy Jack's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
''It is a right handed Bass the picture shows it as left handed because the web cam on my laptop takes mirror images.'' So that's why when I'm on my web cam, my cold sore has miraculously healed up and I have a fresh one on the other side . -
In the past I have organized a courier to pick up, this way you decide the value and the declaration type, (not really viable for small items though), plus some sellers and most privates have no interest in sending out of the lower 48 states and true those that will send over play by the rules.

Chris Squire - Would he have been better as a reader?

Nail, Head, Hit, . That's one high action on another note, fret buzz is certainly not part of his sound. -
Yes. Despite looking really long and unwieldy they're only 30.5" scale
The explorer too is an extra long shape, you have to hold a certain stance, which points in the direction of the arrow, otherwise you look completely out of place.

Are they not short scale necks though
-
Well Geddy used 2 of the power amp versions until recently.

I'm not upto speed on the different models, but this is minus binding and triangle inlays. 4003S perhaps.

Badass Bass II Bridge For Sale -SOLD
SS73 replied to 0353203's topic in Accessories & Other Musically Related Items For Sale
Check this thread, I think it's fair, the bridges I pointed out funnily enough sold pretty quickly after I posted, £40 each or so, but now they're gone it's back to normal £100 new. Funny my lightest rig is a Burman combo, all other lighter stuff I moved on, rest is bigger, V8 rig, SVT Blueline, Marshall etc.
I remember having a discussion with a Hartke rep on this (don't ask). Apparently they had been in discussions with Chris for a deal on providing tour backline. He said that Chris would bi-amp (not uncommon with the Ric's, presumably using a Rick-O-Sound) and run a bass amp for the low end signal and a guitar amp for the high end signal. Apparently the guitar amp was EQ'd to drop all the bass and the bass amp set completely flat. I'm not sure how much of this would be true but i've often thought it would make a fun little experiment with my trusty 4003.
I think the Lead head was a Sunn coloseum Lead as he didn't like the Bass version. But all these various Live amps, Marshall, Fender, Sunn etc all worked well, but studio work was I think Vox AC30. The important part is that Fuzz on the Neck pup.
Chris' bass does not have the Rick-O-Sound so if he is bi-amping it's with a single output from his bass. I saw him back in the mid 70's on the Relayer tour and he was using Marshall amps. He seemed to have a number of different speaker cabs, large and small, but not really sure what they were.
His Bass was modified to have a split signal. He always ran ric's like this.
-
Paul Kossof, Marshall 100w Superbass and Bass 4x12, I think volume was not an issue though.
$5,000, and only 50 made. No-one on here is going to get one, I bet. They will be snapped up by big names. Strange.
Or just given to the big names..
I read an interview with CS a few years back, and he reckoned a big part of his sound came from the way he holds his pick. Apparently he plays downstrokes only, with the barest minimum amount of pick protruding past his finger, and catches the string with the edge of his thumb on the way past. He said it gives the harder attack of a pick, but softens out because of the contact with his thumb. A
Yes heard that too and tried it and it does produce an interesting sound. Along with all the other things, Roto swingbass strings inc all goes towards that sound.

There was a thread on Talkbass a few years ago on his early 70's sound, and reference to an article he made in the 70's, but haven't managed to find it, but basically the amp's were not so much the sound, treble pup clean loud and crisp and bass pup through a fuzz box to a Marshall. I think Close to the Edge was the best sound he produced, just superb.
