1. i think he's looking for the sale forum, easy mistake to make.. Love these basses, congratulations. There's something amazingly satisfying about that xotic tone. I always think the bodies on the jazzes look huge (an issue for me because I'm short), how is it compared to a Fender j size-wise? (I'm curious about the size of the xotic p's as well if anyone knows)
2. The whole thing is a disaster. The website is broken, the options are non-existent, it's laughably weak. It's actually staggeringly weak, I find it difficult to comprehend how p!ss poor this actually is. It's like it was farted out of the brain of a stoned 1st year uni student.
3. I have a 78 fretless maple neck on one of my Precisions and it's pretty much perfect.
4. Fully context-dependent, but in general, if you boost, you are muscling in on sonic space which may already be filled by other instruments, whereas if you reduce certain frequencies, you are creating more space for everything else in the room. In the studio, you always cut first, which allows room for everything else to fit in. This is also the reason why your tone can sound great in isolation, but disappear in a mix. When everything is pushed, and trying to occupy the same small space, the result is always terrible. It's like trying to fit 4 fat men with luggage into a small lift. 4 thin men with minimum luggage will have far more breathing space, and a much better time generally. Losing some sonic fat and excess luggage is a good thing.
5. There's a whole discussion about this here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/286340-thoughts-on-gas-and-energy-levels/page__pid__3070379
6. Boss LMB if you're clipping, otherwise +1 on the Seymour Duncan, I got one recently and it sorted my fretless tone out, it sounds brilliant.
7. He's great, the theoretical stuff is brilliant, I wish there was more stuff like this, I keep looking for podcasts that feature discussions around music and bass playing, can't find an awful lot out there. There is actually a bit of a shortage of intelligent discussion in general out there (unless it's just me that can't find it) but for times when you want to listen to conversation, things like this make for much better listening than LBC, which is sewage at least 99% of the time. Maybe we should have a thread where we post these kinds of things.
8. I had an Alesis interface a few years ago, it was a terrible piece of garbage that never worked properly even with the most straightforward tasks. And the audio quality was not good at all. So if you don't like the sound, I'd sort that out first. Apogee, MOTU, Focusrite all make pretty good interfaces. GarageBand and your Mac's camera will be fine for the rest.
9.
I always find eating a massive dinner leads to GAS... i agree with boredom being a trigger for GAS. I haven't picked up a guitar or bass for more than a minute or two since last September. I have no desire whatsoever to do anything musical but this has left a massive & very boring hole in my life. Despite not wanting to play I am still spending hours every day looking at Ebay & the for sale ads on here. No sense to it whatsoever.
maybe you need to look at finding something new to learn. Transcribe a difficult line, or a solo, or learn a new technique which will make your bass sound different.
10.
Schroeder cab gone, Streamliner gone, Zoom B1xon gone... Hayman remains.
Love the necks on those basses, had a fight with myself a couple of years ago to resist buying a beat up Marathon I really didn't need. The neck felt great, like a snappy P neck but faster. I did think at the time that bass responded well to energetic playing and digging in.
11. …and so, a thread about avoiding GAS turns into a thread about buying basses. It's like an AA meeting where someone turns up with a huge bottle of whisky. We are all doomed. *That's a nice PJ though..
12. A sort of workaround I have for those times when energy levels are low and thing are sounding bad is I use those times for technical exercises or transcribing or just shedding and metronome stuff. If you're practicing scales or something similar, the sound you make doesn't matter so much, you tend to focus on the task rather than the 'feely' stuff which needs creativity and inspiration. And often warming up by doing an hour of technical stuff gets your brain in the mood for creative playing anyway. I did that today in fact, had a day of tedious meetings, got back to my home studio and just stared into space, zero inspiration, but I know I have tunes I need to learn and rehearsals to prepare for so I just did some technical excercises around the tunes I'm learning and within an hour I was back on track, buzzing and ready to play properly.
13. Some thoughts on energy levels, apathy and GAS. This may apply to you or not, but I've noticed that those 3 things are closely connected for me. I've noticed recently that if I pick up a bass first thing in the morning before the rest of the day starts, I connect with it a lot better, which means I play better, which means it makes a better sound. If on the other hand I pick up the same bass after a stressy day, or straight after eating a massive dinner, my energy levels are low and I have trouble concentrating, that same bass sounds very different, I can't connect with it and start finding problems with the tone or the setup. And that inevitably leads to GAS. But increasingly I'm realising that the problems are really down to me and my mood. The bass has not changed since the morning, but my energy levels and general state of mind has. I think it's all down to the physicality of the instrument, it responds to your playing by reflecting whatever mood you project into it. So if you're alert and energetic, your playing sounds alert and energetic. If you're tired, your bass sounds weird and lumpen. So I suppose the point of this is before you get rid of that bass you just spent 2 grand on, you should play it in the right frame of mind first. (not saying this will cure all GAS, but in my case, sometimes I'm the problem, not the bass).
14.
Just saw a pic in a TB thread about the new MIM PJ, a replacement for the seafoam green one in sunburst. This could fit the bill! https://www.talkbass.com/attachments/deluxepj-png.880585/
Looks very nice, I have no experience with MIM Fenders but I know they're very good these days, I will definitely try this one.
15.
If you are open to PJ configuration then you could pick up a Sadowsky HPJ in mint condition used for that money. Jazz neck and P body. Fantastic build quality.
Had one, sold it to you Loved that bass with all my heart, but I was missing the maple neck and Fender tone too much, and I couldn't justify keeping both that and the Jazz..
16. motu microbook? I've had mine for about 6 years, I'm still running Lion but it works on all os versions. I can't remember the phantom power situation so look it up, but other than that it's fine, sound quality is really good.
17.
Of course all antique dealers are the same! However, without wishing to stereotype, I'm guessing that might explain the lack of internet savvy.
Yeah most likely something like that. Didn't mean to sound quite so judgemental earlier..
18. This thread makes no sense. 1. This guy posts expensive thing to random person without getting paid, believing some nonsense about a card reader. (?) 2. Other guy can't be bothered to pay him, but he is right there on Facebook and at the address where the bass got posted to. (??) 3. so instead of just chasing it up, guy makes a Facebook page and posts on forums about it. In the 'introductions' section. (???) No idea what to make of any of that.
19. Ah this looks great and only down the road from my old house too. I'd prefer this to Glastonbury but my girlfriend and her mates are making me go there instead. (I'm way past Glastonbury age, nobody likes to look at a gurning 43 year old going 'mental'.)
20.
American Standard Magificent 7 Limited Editon - even cheaper than a regular US Standard! As long as you don't mind a PJ... http://www.dawsons.c...colour-sunburst
Yeah I did see that, the rosewood neck is the only thing that is not quite right (I need the snap from the maple to counter the dead strings I like to use). But other than that it's a beauty for sure.
Have a word with Jon Shuker. Your specs were pretty much the same as mine and he built the beauty in my sig. You won't be a million miles away on price. Link: http://basschat.co.u...__fromsearch__1
Yeah that looks killer, how are you finding the Delanos?
Sandberg VS4 Passive. The Mk1 version, as the Mk2 has a slightly different shape. The necks are all the same across the VS and TT range - very jazz like but with a flatter 'board. Very comfy indeed.
Hmm didn't know about these, they look nice too. Also just remembered DLakin has a Glaub too which is spot on, but getting hold of the right spec in the UK might be expensive.
21. The Fender design experience thread has inspired me to look around for a P with a J neck and I'm trying to figure out what my options are. Criteria: - traditional p shape body - traditional j width maple neck - USA Fender quality - passive, Fender p tone, no fancy business or 'steroids'... - price up to £1.5k, cheaper would be good - color black or sunburst (yes I am boring) I know of the following options: - Fender D.E: about £1.5k - eBay parts: about £1.2k with legit USA parts - Marusczyk jake: around £1k - Lakland Glaub with j neck, price seems to vary a bit - Fender Japan? not sure - Limelight maybe? Not sure What else is out there?
22. For a cheapish solution, someone once mentioned using rolls of toilet paper to pad out corners and edges, rather than spending money on endless bubble wrap. I think that's a great idea, less plastic waste and you can put it to use right away after your next coffee. Or whenever nature calls.
23.
The Roland micro cube is perfect for busking and surprisingly loud. I used it briefly doing some stuff with seven djembe players (loud) and it cut through sweetly. Incidentally mine is in the for sale section haha - great amp!
Yep I wish I had one of these the other week, I turned up to play somewhere with no power and got plugged into some horrible Maplins battery amp which made my acoustic bass sound like death metal coming out of a mobile phone speaker.
24. There's a guy on TB who's recently been posting about getting ripped off by this builder, search for info there.
25.
Yes. You get to fill in your own customs declaration though, and for a dollar or two they will remove all the paperwork from the package that might indicate how much it was worth...
Oh really? You can be 'creative' with your declaration?
