Check out this guy's videos, Michael Scmitt, he uses what sounds like a bit of delay to liven up is sound, he talks about it in one of his videos. I'm on a phone with bad sound so I don't know whether he's using it on this particular one, but it's worth checking out his channel anyway, he's an awesome bass player. http://youtu.be/4vhiLD8bj30

I really want to try his short scale precisions, I wish there was a place to demo his stuff in the uk.

Very nice comparison, I'm going to give the DR's a shot, the high tension puts me off all the other flats I've tried, even though tone-wise I love the G string on the LaBella's. Would love to hear a comparison of all these again after a month or 2 of use.
If you think that the differences between tuners are more significant than the differences between people's ears, there's no hope...
This. But also, I'm not implying that people shouldn't tune to each other. There is really no great skill in tuning yourself to a piano, it's not like it's some great noble skill that is disappearing in modern times, it just takes a bit longer. Tuners exist to help you be in tune, and speed up the process. We don't have to use a clock to tell the time, we could just use the sun and our gut feelings, we don't have to use a thermometer or look at weather reports, we could just go outside and see what happens, but there are things which help us with these tasks, so we use them to make life a bit easier to navigate. That's all.
Ok, but do you all then use the same tuner? If not you won't be in tune. Orchestras manage. Ever asked yourself how?
eh? I don't get it. we don't have to use the same tuner to be in tune, we just have to tune to the same tuning system.
I went decades without owning a tuner and in defence of the OP what has perfect pitch got to do with it? If it's just guitars, you tune to each other, you're probably all going to be in the general pitch ballpark anyway, so being slightly off isn't going to be an issue. If you have a fixed tuned instrument (keys), tune to that. Insofar as being in a noisy room, you set aside a few minutes to tune to each other. Band discipline.
That's fine if your band has 3 members. Try it in a rehearsal room filled with 12 jazz noodlers busy warming up.
But then again there is Liza Minelli and Kirsty McColl. Also, I would venture Ben Castle (son of Roy) is a apparently a pretty good jazz musician.
Don't mean this to sound disrespectful but I don't think Roy Castle is intimidating in quite the same way as McCartney. isn't he a game show host? 😂 but yes there are probably exceptions..

That wide body shape looks weird to me, especially with the shorter scale. Looks unnecessarily bulky. But then it's difficult to argue with £150.
Those Genesis toffs did interesting stuff.
True, but they didn't have the pressure of celebrity parents who they were never going to surpass. Also, they never pretended to be anything other than posh public school boys.

Why would he be any good? He's mega posh, so he probably has very little of interest to sing about. Plus he's got the world's most famous musician for a dad, its just too much to live up to. You should listen to Dylan's son and his band, mediocre and lukewarm crap, it's awful. Posh spoilt children of celebrities rarely have much to say musically. It's like watching a toff from Mayfair singing along to the Smiths.
While making some time on Youtueb, just saw some classic Natas footage. At 15.30 that song made me want to play bass! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccf0ENQBee0 What a great bassline -- ahhhh the 80's
I had the SMA Natas board with the panther on it, I was obsessed with both the song and the video when I was around 14. Wish I still had that board, I broke it in half and never found another I liked quite as much. So much good music from late 80s / early 90s alternative culture both here and the USA.

As others have mentioned, these things are flawed anyway if they're picking up vibrations from other instruments. Was trying to use it again last night, the thing really is worthless. And having to mute strings constantly is really unnatural and time consuming, which defeats the point.

My black/maple 83 Fender P, which I bought in a bar in New York many years ago. It's covered in dings and holes in weird places, it weighs a ton, the string spacing is stupidly wide, the pickups sound obnoxious and huge in almost any setting, but for some reason it's the bass I am most attached to, and the one I sound best on.

95 USA P neck, maple / rosewood lined fretless, truss rod is fine, tuners / machineheads are all very nice, overall condition is excellent, one mark in the varnish and couple of tiny scratches (see last photo). Selling because I prefer maple and I found a suitable replacement. Price includes insured postage via Royal Mail. Collection from SE or Central London, Beckenham, or Harrow (depending on what day it is). I'm happy to knock a bit off the price if you collect in person. (Rotten decking courtesy of the previous owner of this house, which I have just purchased - I'm pretty sure we're going to take the whole thing up soon and get rid of it)

I bought this 90s USA fretless about a year ago, added some CS62 pickups, a black guard and some cream covers, and it sounds and feels great, I've been playing it daily since, but I've always wanted a lined maple neck for it. (Just prefer the feel and tone of maple on a precision - my main bass is a black / maple fretted P). As Fender don't make lined maple fretless necks, I was trying to figure out how to go about finding one, and then I came across this neck - a 77/78 USA fretless maple neck that the previous owner started to turn into a fretted, and then gave up half-way for whatever reason (possibly because of the location of the side dots). So basically the neck was originally a fretless, but it had lines cut in it already. Perfect - a legit 70s Fender neck, that needs to be restored one way or another. So I bought it, and took it down to Martin at the Gallery, and he filled the lines and basically restored it to a fretless, but with the addition of lines. So now, the bass looks like this, and the tone is exactly what I was after. It's all a matter of preference, but that maple snap makes a big difference to the way I play - I know others much prefer rosewood on a fretless, I just love a maple neck. ps - the original rosewood neck will probably be up for sale soon.

Any chord detection software I've used in the past has not been great, but maybe that one is better, however for slowing stuff down, Audacity is free and will do the job well.
Do you not tune to the other musicians in your band then? As a matter of fact I do have perfect pitch, but I still always check tuning with guitar, keyboard etc. If you can't get the rest of your band to shut up and tune up, not much of a band IMHO
Thanks for your insightful critique of the band, I will pass it onto the other members and we will have a mass debate about it. Yes I can tune to whoever, but it's not the point, this was an introductory jam with a new band - full of excellent musicians who were waaaay above my league btw - and I didn't want to start things off as the fumbling out of tune guy who didn't come prepared. Capiche?
Look out for this epic new advancement in tuner technology coming soon. I hear they're really good.
I totally agree with this sentiment, which is why I was lamenting the loss of my trusty Boss TU88, which is basically just like that thing but with a metronome and a headphone output included. In fact I'm just going to go ahead and buy another one, no more clip-on silliness for me.
Joyo do some great stuff. Have you thought about sending the tuner back on the grounds its faulty?
it's not faulty, it's just terrible. I experimented with it a bit last night at home and even when it does find a note, it lags, it's not very accurate and you have to wait patiently and mute the strings and start over, it's a tedious and laborious process, defeats the whole point. I am taking it back for a refund for sure.
Can you guys really not tune a bass?
Why, do you have perfect pitch? You'd usually need reference for at least one of the strings to be in tune with everyone else. Plus have you tried tuning a bass in a sweaty rehearsal room full of musicians setting up and getting ready to play? Good luck hearing yourself amongst that car crash.

Guy in the shop said they were 'brilliant' for bass. These things literally have one job to do. And they can't do it. Absolute toilet. Wish I hadn't lost my Boss TU88.

Just a heads up, bought one of these yesterday, it worked for an hour, took it to a rehearsal tonight, and it had no idea what's going on. Display is just blank, showing random notes occasionally, absolute sh!te. Was unable to tune my bass all night. It's a pbass with flats, not exactly unusual. Waste of time and money, if you're thinking of getting one, don't bother.
