My idea of hell. The worst Chigwell chav aspirational aesthetic I've ever seen. A bass for a greasy Russian oligarch. Or the son of a Saudi prince who lives in Dubai and owns a pet lion.
When did they go to a passive option on the active Deluxe?
I have one from 2011, it's a black / maple passive / active USA deluxe. Through a tube amp, the bridge pickup passive tone rolled off is 100% perfect for the Jaco tone, it's really satisfying to play. The pickups are dead quiet on mine, and in active mode that mid cut / boost makes a huge difference, it gets rid of that weedy thin sound jazzes can sometimes have, but it's still an authentic j tone, not an artificial over-the-top one. Love the sound and feel of these basses, I tested a bunch of different jazzes when I was looking around for one and the USA deluxe felt and sounded the best to me.
You can just have the centred M logo, like mine
Cool, I don't mind the logo as much as the word Jake and the 'player to player' text. Not a huge deal at all, just a small thing.

Are they going to be at the LBGS? I might be joining this club soon but I'd like to try the Jake basses first if at all possible. Also - and this is a small point - I'm not a fan of the 'jake' name and the general graphic appearance of the headstock, do you guys think it would be naughty to ask for a plain headstock, or one that has my own artwork on it?

You'll need an audio interface.
Stretch to some Sennheiser HD25 if you can
This. Had mine for something like 12 years. Every part is replaceable, they're comfy and they sound very good. I wouldn't buy a pair of headphones that boost the bass massively, they will give you ear fatigue, and false information about your tone, which might affect your playing.

Any builders in the UK that could make this bass?
How about this? Black scaled down Precision bass body, 32" scale and, if you don't use the J pup, sounds just like a Precision: http://basschat.co.u...35-l400-posted/ OK, shameless plug for something that isn't exactly as specified but, well, you know...
I did stare at that for ages the other day, it's really nice, I've already had to get my girlfriend to talk me out of it once (voice of reason vs gas). I'm after a maple neck ideally, and it hasn't quite got the traditional 'jazz standards on electric bass' vibe i'm going for, but regardless of that it's a beauty. The price is crazy, very surprised it's still here. -
There was a 7/8 scale P bass on eBay recently - is that the sort of thing that you were after??
I think 7/8 is too small, isn't that 24 inches? I'm after 30, possibly 32, bit scared of anything smaller than a 30. (I play standard p-basses at the moment). -

I emailed, and got a very quick reply! Turns out the Jake model exists in short and medium scale too, and it looks pretty good to me, the price is very good for a brand new bass. I'd go for a black / maple, and possibly different pickups, but other than that these look tasty. Anyone tried the short scales? How's the neck? -

Thanks guys, sounds like I need to drop him an email. Re. the Mustang - I did think about this, but those pickups aren't going to work for me, I'd like to be able to drop in standard precision pickups like the SPB-3's (and take them out again if I hate them). Unless you know of a Mustang model that uses normal P pickups? There are pics out there but I think they're mods. -
Looking into short scale options at the moment, but really I just want what I already play, but smaller. So basically what you see below - a perfectly downscaled precision bass body, with normal precision pickups, probably SPB3's, with a 30" maple neck, and a normal Fender style headstock. Is there anyone in the UK that could do this, and make it sound and play like a precision?
One positive story for south-east London pubs is http://www.ivyhousenunhead.com/ , which was rescued from property development by the local community. It is a great pub, with real ales, food, and live music etc many nights of the week.
I know it well, we nearly moved to Nunhead. (we were all set to buy a flat in Ivydale road, but then the estate agents tried to shaft us by lying about the lease so we had to pull out). Nice community feel to that area at the moment.
You're not going to Highgate are you? http://www.thepoke.co.uk/2016/02/12/people-eavesdropping-posh-mums-north-london-comedy-gold/
I would find that hilarious if it wasn't so depressing... This is happening all over the city. The whole of London is getting eaten by these people! It wasn't that long ago that Highgate was a bit rough and relatively cheap, I rented a room there about 10 years ago for 50 quid a week. I love north London, much prefer it to south and I wish I could move back there instead. I used to live in St Johns Wood until last year and found that less snobbish than Dulwich and Herne Hill, believe it or not. As it is, I'm moving to the arse end of s.e. London, because it's the only place we can still afford a whole (tiny) house, practically in the suburbs, but I can't wait to be amongst some 'normal' people again. I do miss the old London a lot, even if it was a bit rougher round the edges.
Just been reading up and Dulwich Estates sounds like a posh old boys network who don't give a monkeys about the local area.
Dulwich is ridiculous. The village is home to some of the biggest snobs in London, the whole place is a giant toff's club. I can't wait to move away from this area. 2 more weeks and I'm out of here.

I live minutes away from his place. This is happening everywhere in London, as a direct result of gentrification. As wealthy people replace 'normal' people, the shops and places to eat/drink also change to accommodate their needs. Culture in London is dying. The only thing you can do here anymore is stuff your face. Which isn't bad in itself, but it's no replacement for the endless cultural movements London has always been renowned for.

I want to have my cake and eat it too (compressors)
project_c replied to Guinness21's topic in Effects
I'm going to recommend the Boss LMB3, because it's the only pedal I've kept in use every day. It does limiting without issues, I use it mostly for that, both at home and in live use, but the enhance function is also nice if used in moderation. It won't color your tone much compared to a boutique comp, but it does sweeten things a little bit, and you can pick them up used for about £35. I'd be the first to jump on something more expensive if I felt it was lacking in any way, but I haven't found a reason to stop using it yet. -

Just a feeler for now to see if there is any potential interest - I love this amp and really would rather not sell it, but there's just no room for all my gear in my new home studio. There are a couple of scuffs on the tweed, they were there when I bought it. Other than that, it's in perfect working condition, no issues, great amp. Sounds amazing, both with my Precision with tapewounds and with my Jazz with rounds. Castor wheels and official Fender cover also included. Pickup only from London SE21. (please note - if I find a way to make this fit into my new studio, I may withdraw it from sale.)
-
sold for £200, that's a good price, whoever got that did well. I tried to haggle with a guy in a guitar shop for ages over one of these, he refused to take less than £350. It's still sitting in the same shop I think, nearly 2 years on..

If you're in any way interested in music production and small labels, particularly electronic stuff, Soundcloud is essential. Surprised they're not doing really well, their popularity is huge.
There's similar going on in glorious Tooting once a month: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/262929-jazz-fusion-evening-in-at-tooting-tram-social-sw17-thursday-february-4th/
Nice! That's just down the road from me, we'll come down to the next one.

What I saw in this place was that actual musicianship was appreciated in a fairly traditional sense, which is something I haven't seen amongst young people in a while. (Unless it's at festivals or parties and everyone's neck deep in MDMA, which doesn't count). I'm in my early 40's but I teach 20-23 year olds here in London, so I have a lot of contact with people in that age group too, but even so this was a surprise to me. It's a good sign though, for sure.

But the 80's was ages ago, everything has changed an awful lot since then, especially in that area. Are you not surprised to see this genre becoming popular with 20 somethings again? I definitely am. Maybe it's not such a big deal, I don't know.
