1. My mate was (and still is) a guitar player, and as a pair of spotty 13 year olds, it was him who suggested the bass to me, he wanted to have a mate who played bass, and I was the tallest mate, I think he had a perception that all the best players were tall. His old man bought and sold stuff, and I got a Marlin Slammer Precision copy for £25, and here I am nearly 30 years later, with 8 very nice Basses and 25 years of gigging behind me.
2. Don't know if I already mentioned this, but I 'paid forward' my copy to the hotel myself and mrs LK1975 went to on honeymoon last year. So Dave, there is a copy of your book on the bookshelf in the Rendevous resort, St. Lucia. No Doubt, it's a lot warmer than I am right now.
3. Yep, I can too vouch for for Boosh. Top bloke and a top top player. Deal with confidence people!
4. Thanks Guys for the all the inputs. I had a feeling the topic might be of interest and I'm genuinely grateful for all the opinions. As it turns out we're having a vocal rehearsal tonight, and I intend to bring it up. It's certainly valid that I'll be most comfortable when playing the Yamaha, which in turn as said by a few above, lends itself to a better performance. I'm hoping this angle will sway it. There's been a few messages bouncing around this afternoon and I've touched on it there, so it shouldn't be too much of a surprise when I bring it up. Back when I have more news!
5.
I had this with a blues band years ago - I had a rosewood coloured Cort C5 at the time, and they tried to get me to change to a Fender. I took the "f**k them" attitude and stuck with the Cort, but after a short while I got kicked out. I guess if it's not your band, you need to be happy with this being a possible outcome. I was gutted at the time.
I don't think I'm in danger of being kicked out, it's just more of a case of it seeming to be more important to those 'in charge' than it is to me. You're all giving me food for thought though, maybe I'll re-approach the subject with the BL.
6. Got the Flea Jazz, that's PINK, albeit subtle, haha.
7.
Out of interest. What's the guitarist/s using? My earlier reply was a bit flippant. I do actually get the colour thing.
1 of them Strats for definite, although the other one has been bringing a PRS to rehearsals. But I know he has access to other guitars too. Girl Singer has a strat too.
8.
I don`t think me playing a BC Rich Warlock would look "right" in my punk/Oi band.
Definitely Lozz, there are times when it makes sense. As above, I think the main sticking point is actually the colour...
9.
Like it or not, image is a large part of what we do and that includes how the instrument we turn up with is perceived by the audience and the band leader. For that reason I now own a couple of fenders again. Having said that, I would have thought that the attitude would have worked in a prog band but then what do I know...
I think it's the fact that it's Sonic Blue. The comment was that it looks like a 'toy' bass, compared to a Fender.
10.
I think you've already suggested. Serve the band if you have an "appropriate" axe.
Yep, as I said I'm OK with using a Jazz / Precision, I'm interested in what everyone else would do if put in the same position. I've encountered it before, and have always been a little puzzled by it. As has been said, the punters probably won't care, then again we are talking Progressive Rock Fans here, you never know.........
11. Hey folks. Whats your opinion on this one? My favourite Bass to gig with is undoubtedly my sonic blue Yamaha Attitude ltd3. Love everything about it. Been told that the Prog band I'm in requires a more 'traditional' looking Bass, a Fender basically. No problem, I have suitable looking Basses I can use, but none of them feel as 'right' to me as the Yamaha. I'm pretty pragmatic about it and will do what's necessary, I'm not the 'main' guy in the band, and I enjoy the music so if the look is that important, then so be it. But what would YOU do?
12. Billy Sheehan for me. Obviously he's very technically gifted (although if you ask him he says it's all about practice), but he's also brilliant at simply serving the song when required. Not all of his stuff is 'widdly-diddly'. He's also very willing to share his knowledge with anyone, also very approachable and humble. Amazing gear-head too.
13.
After many years on the bass guitar roundabout, I'm very happy with my Road Worn Precision. It's as good as any P I've played in four decades and it didn't cost thousands, which is good insurance against me moving it on... ...just need the matching Road Worn Jazz, now...
Like this you mean?!
14. GAS never goes away. It is only ever 'subdued' at best in my experience. The amount of times I've told myself that I'll never need another bass if I get that one!
15. Oooof! - if it's your sort of thing. Aria pro II SBR-80: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Aria_SBR.html
16.
Well..multiscale is evolution. Also extended range or extended scale basses.Even compount radius, torzal necks and tapered strings are evolution. Is like telling that all the active electronic basses are fad. The relic doesnt afect sound or playability. Its like trying to make a guitar looking epic. The other exaples i give, afects sound or playability and go the instruments one step forther. Oh!dont forget..relic is more worse than lined fretless..
But, you see, IMHO relic'ing does affect the playability when the neck finish is artificially worn. If you mean the setup is not affected, then yes I agree, but to me the feel of the neck is part of the playability. YMMV!
17.
What about this one? http://www.ebay.co.u...%3D192088053032
Head on desk. Send help.
18. Indeed. Rhythm Stick is one of those songs I keep telling myself to sit down and learn.......trouble is every time I hear it I think, forget it!
19. Cheers fella, but that way trouble most certainly lies, I'd definitely need to sell something first. Already have 2 amps (Ashdown ABM1000 and a TC BH250)
20. Tell you what I'm bored of, repeated comments such as - how can a roadworn bass be described as 'pristine' or 'like new'? It's not just on this thread either, just seen it on a Flea Jazz for sale post. YAWN. We all know what those statements actually mean, i.e., in the same condition as when bought from the shop.
21.
I'm sure you are a nice bloke, I just like to have a nice new looking bass and try to keep it like that, I'm not anti relic I just don't get them, horses for courses, Im a nice bloke too
I get that, I've got a lovely shiny Yamaha Attitude ltd3 (and a ltd2 actually) which I too try to keep pristine. The main thing for me about the Fender Roadworns I have, which are, like Marc, the sunburst P, the sunburst Jazz and the Flea, is they way the necks feel in the hand. To me they just feel very comfortable and I like to feel as comfortable as possible when I play. The necks on the Yamaha Attitudes I have are also very comfortable to me, some people really hate those too. I enjoy playing the Yamahas and the Fender Roadworns pretty much equally. Like you say, horses for courses. Some folks don't get why they make signature models either, I'm a sucker for them quite frankly if it's a player I really like. Apart from the latest incarnation of the Steve Harris Bass, but that's just because of the WHU badge. Anyway, to the original question 'Is anybody getting bored of reliced instruments?' - In summary I'd say, yes, some people are bored of seeing them. But also, some people like them, are not bored of them and will continue to buy them. And then some people will be offended that someone else has bought them, but some people will be pleased for those people that they've bought an instrument that they like. And some people won't care either way. I think there's room in the world for all of those opinions. *Drops mic*
22. Keep telling myself I don't need one of these. Location and willingness to post?
