Do we play bass guitars the wrong way round?
LewisK1975 replied to northstreet's topic in General Discussion
Never thought about it from a strength / dexterity point of view - I've only ever thought about it in regard to learning how to play. I've always thought it was weird that they made left handed guitars, because if you've never picked up a guitar before then you're learning something completely from scratch regardless of what hand is your dominant / writing hand. YMMV! -
So, how does your drummer hear you when you ditch the rig?
In my band, he's currently only hearing whatever happens to bleed from the PA., and he's OK with it. But we are planning on all being on in-ears before long. On-stage volume has always been a point of discussion in my band, and typically it's usually the bass volume which gets complained about, so, I took the bull by the horns so to speak and removed my on-stage volume. Means our singer is happier and I can have as much bass as I like in my own personal mix.
Difficult to beat black/black/maple Fenders in my opinion.
Yup!!

Love that sound Lozz. Cool song too, props to you and the band!
Best way to be sure is pot codes and pick up codes.
What he said. The late 70's Fender serial numbers are really a guide only, You should take the latest of the serial number, pickup stamps, and pot codes to be the year of manufacture.
You should buy my book "101 Creative ways to accidentally injure punters with a speaker cabinet"
You'd sell millions!

Korn / Limp Bizkit in December, then Maiden in May'17. Quite pleased with that. Still deciding whether to get tickets for Thunder..

Things To Think About Before Joining A Working Band
Previous bass player had his share paid back when he left and new bass player is expected to pay in. I guess it links to the other thread on here at the moment of who owns the pa etc. I'm a firm belier that it's easier if certain people own certain things but all questions I'll ask up front In future. I did join and it all worked out ok.
Good to hear it worked out, but that really should have been stipulated up front to any potential new member IMHO. -
No previous musical aspirations by any of my family members, but I wasn't discouraged, apart from having the Bass too loud when practising in my bedroom..!
Question from me after my last band is am I expected to pay a joining fee to cover my share of lights/pa etc. Auditioned, liked it got the gig and was told I needed to chip in a week or so later.
What? For gear that was already owned by the band? Jog on! -
Wow - what a weird thing to happen! Glad it all worked out OK in the end and you didn't get a cap popped in yo ass... My particular favourite at load out is when pissed punters are surprised by, 'No, sorry, you can't have a lift home in the band's van'; Or, the only 10 people left in the pub are all filling the doorway, love that one. Having to say, excuse me / watch your backs please, every time you go back and fore.
That's correct up to a point. Our singer won't even listen to a tune he's never heard before as it'll mean he would have to learn it. When I pointed out that the rest of the band had to learn all the other tunes, he replied, "but you're musicians, it's what you do".
Ha! Brilliant logic at work there. I totally get the whole lazy band members thing, our singer stays in the van while we set everything up, and then goes back to the van while we pack everything down. She is bloody good mind you. And does all the bookings, gets the cash at the end of the night and divvys up, etc. So I don't really mind. Always hated the admin part of being in a band (apart form doing my books for the HMRC of course). There's another question to add to the list - Do all band members help with load in/out and setup? -
OK for me, they've got some nice stuff in there!

What was the first bass you had GAS for?
LewisK1975 replied to ianrendall's topic in General Discussion
As a spotty 14yr old back in 1989, definitely a Yamaha Attitude when I first saw the picture of Billy Sheehan with it in Guitarist magazine. Which me and my mate used to read on our laps sitting at the back of our Maths lesson. Never did manage to get may hands on a version 1 Attitude, but I do own a Black Ltd2 and also a Blue ltd3. Also previously bought and sold a seafoam green ltd2. -
What were you doing when you were Eleven years old?
LewisK1975 replied to lowdown's topic in General Discussion
Hmmm let me see, that would be 1986 for me. Probably playing computer games on a Sinclair ZX Spectrum. Didn't really have any interest in music until I was 14. -
Things To Think About Before Joining A Working Band
LewisK1975 replied to blue's topic in General Discussion
Great topic by the way Blue. I think something else to consider is how the band play it regarding investment. I.e., when the PA / Lights etc require replacing is everyone expected to contribute? What if you then leave while that equipment is still used with the band? -
Yes. The band I'm in has a song selection policy which has become increasingly apparent as time has gone on: that is to say, if the singer suggests it, it goes in to the set. If anyone else suggests anything, it gets thrown out, unless the singer likes it, in which case it goes in.
To a certain extent , I think this is OK - the singer is the focal point of the band and 99.99999% of the time, all the average pub audience is actually listening to. If they don't like the song, it'll be immediately apparent in their performance to any discerning audience, it doesn't matter if the band nails it, if the singer ain't delivering, the song will be rubbish, IMHO. -
Probably my YOB (1975) Jazz Bass. Bought from The Gallery earlier this year for £2200. Interestingly was a commision sale for Steve Miles, owner of Basschat.co.uk
Glad it worked out for you Lew! I've kept my amp and cabs. Just incase i ever need to play where i cant go through the PA or with IEMs. I just love the fact i don't have to wait for a few hours post gig for my ears to stop ringing now!!
Yep what I'm thinking to do is to shift my super compacts and ABM1000, and re-invest the proceeds into a standby rig for what you describe above and better in-ears..keeping an amp and cabs of that spec 'just incase' seems a little over the top IMHO!
Quad balanced armature with dual lows as a starting point!
Cheers Russ, I know it makes sense! Thanks for all your advice!

Fender PJR65 (the Japanese Power Jazz Special equivalent)
LewisK1975 replied to GaryTheGreat11's topic in Bass Guitars
Yep I'm inclined to agree with njr911, I've owned 3 JBS's (pearl, black and metallic red) in my time, and the most I paid for one was £275. Granted that was around 10 years ago though... -
P-Bass copy - unknown maker, any ideas?
LewisK1975 replied to LewisK1975's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
It's an East German Musima - seen a few of these before. http://wietsesguitar.../pagina465.html Some of these - later ones, I'd guess - had Japanese hardware - this one has Gotoh tuners, shame one's missing as they're decent quality. Most of these seem to be unbranded in the UK.
Yeah I thought the tuners looked quite decent too. Well I'll keep my eye on it, at that price it's gotta be worth a punt ! -
Vox Standard. That's twice what it should be priced at. Well - Couldn't part with the effects just yet, but I have to say in-ears are an absolute revelation! Did Saturday's gig with reduced backline on stage, only enough volume for the drummer to really hear it. Spoke to said drummer on Sunday afernoon and didn't even bother taking the amp/cab in for Sunday night's gig. I've set my monitor feed up as a basic mix of everything, with my vocals and the bass pushed up a little just for my own purposes. Seems to work a treat. Think I will be investing in higher spec earphones in the not too distant future though. Nothing really wrong with the SE215's, but it's obvious that you can get better, especially for bass applications. In short - can't see me ever doing a gig without them now! Now then, what to do with my amp and cabs?
