1. Hey all, after my recent issues with my Ashdown ABM1000, I'm looking to get a decent Tour grade case for it. Either a 'live in' type where you'd pop the front and back off for a gig, or one of the ones like a tray with a lid (if that makes sense) that does up with the butterfly latches. Spotted these - http://www.castlecases.co.uk/ Anyone got any other recommendations / ones to avoid? Cheers!
2.
For no charge? that's pretty awesome, well done team Ashdown!
Obviously I had to pay Parcelforce to ship it to them, but that's all it cost me....no charge for parts/labour/return shipping! Very happy man!
3. Yep - Looks like you can set it to either 'rise', 'fall', 'step' or 4 type of standard....cool. Good review here: - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDuonqjXm14
4.
Yep, took a dive in the band van at some point last week - had a padded sleeve on it, but it must've had a good whack to dislodge the power amp from the chassis. And that's only the visible damage. Hoping it's not going to be too expensive to repair, but I'm not holding my breath, I've got a terrible feeling that abletec power module comes only as a complete unit......sigh.
Well wat a total result from Ashdown - see my thread http://basschat.co.uk/topic/288334-ashdown-top-service/
5. So my beloved ABM1000 took a dive in the band's van and although it seemed to fire up OK, it was sounding pretty sick (that's not a young persons vernacular 'sick' either)........ What looked to be the power amp had completey come off the chassis and one component on the power amp board was sitting up at an angle, popped off the PCB: Emailed Mark and he told me just to send it in. So I packed her up and sent her on Tuesday, it got there pre 1pm on Wednesday. Dropped Mark an email this morning (holding my breath for the diagnosis and repair quote), and him and Guy tell me the amp is fixed, tested and played through to make sure. Will be sent back to me today, delivered tomorrow. Amazing service! Back in time for the weekends gigs. Couldn't be happier. And to top it all off, there was no charge for the repair, just amazing! Thanks to the Ashdown Team. That's what you call customer service!
6.
Maybe ask Ashdown who they'd use?
I did, and they didn;t have a preference - Thanks all, I ended up using the good ole royal mail and it'll get there today. Still a useful thread for anyone else considering options though!
7. I bought 2 for my super compacts, excellent service and great products. Would not hesitate to buy from them again. Actually cheaper to get them direct from Roqsolid than from Barefaced.
8. I have a Roadworn 50's Precision in sunburst and that has the same neck dimensions as the classic 50s. I really like it, it's actually probably my favourite Precision out of all of those I've had. One other difference you should consider is the nut width - 1.75" on the 50's, 1.625" on the standard. I really like the larger nut width, but it's not for everyone. For me it depends what you want the bass for, if it's going to be a workhorse and you forsee it being modded over the years, I'd go for the standard. Regarding the heel truss rod adjustment - A few of my basses have it and you can usually get enough access by removing the pickguard, doesn't usually require taking the neck off. Of course some prefer to remove the neck as it's only 4 screws, whereas removing the pickguard is 10+ screws!
9.
That doesn't sound good - did it have an accident?
Yep, took a dive in the band van at some point last week - had a padded sleeve on it, but it must've had a good whack to dislodge the power amp from the chassis. 10. Taken some pics as my broken ABM1000 is on it's way to Ashdown for repair, might as well share them!
11.
I'll go with it's because he never had a hit or anthem, What's his 'Eruption', 'Jump' or 'Beat It'? Can you whistle a single BS lick or line?
Most people have been quoting the 'NV' solo piece as Billy's 'eruption', for me it's 'Shy Boy'. Written by him, and he's played a version of that song in every rock band he's ever been in, from Talas right through to The Winery Dogs. The DLR version with Vai (from Eat 'em and smile) is probably the best recorded version out there. https://www.youtube....h?v=UtwBJycUihw
12.
Maybe ask Ashdown who they'd use?
Yeah good call, I thought about that too. I'll email them..
13.
..... There are plenty of great guides online and being able to set up your own instrument is a fantastic skill to have!
Probably the most important thing any of us will ever learn! I always go through all the formalities of setup on any Bass I buy, like a 'getting to know you' exercise....
14. Great question, and I'd say you should still capo it. The only reason for me is that's how I've always done it. Zero9 is most likely correct though, it probably makes no difference whe you have the zero fret. Just try it? Measure the relief with / without the capo and see if there's a difference?
15. Thanks for the replies so far everyone - looks as though I can take my pick...
16.
I have just used DHL through interparcel. You can insure for 2% of value.
I don't know if I should worry too much about insurance, apart from it getting lost I suppose. It's already broken
17.
Yep, if you search youtube for "Bass player falls off stage" I am the one with green strings. To be honest it is very funny.
Brilliant. That's right up there with Del Boy falling through the bar for me!....
18. Gotta send my ABM1000 into Ashdown for repair. Was left in the van last week and it's taken a dive at some point and is now sounding very sick.... Can anyone care to recommend a preffered courier for sending it in? Or are they all as bad as each other? I was just going to send it Royal mail guaranteed next day type of thing.... Cheers all, Lewis.
19. Thanks for that, it's a great looking Bass for sure...
20. Thread revival!! To the OP - Mark G3, did you get the T-Rod? How is it?
21.
I suppose I started listening to Billy back when he was doing shred stuff with Tony McAlpine and the like...but I don't disagree, he did do some tasteful stuff with Mr. Big. The Winery Dogs just seem to have a bit more groove. (I'm probably wrong)
Not at all, I'd agree and I much prefer The Winery Dogs stuff over anything from the Mr Big camp since 'Hey Man' (1996). I was delighted when I heard the Winery Dogs debut, no-one was making albums like that any more... Have to confess to being a little dissapointed with the 2nd album though - not necessarily the songs, but on the first half of the album the Bass is so low in the mix, it kinda spoils it for me
22.
.......... I think he has really dialled it down for The Winery Dogs....but that's probably more about the songs than anything else.
Hmmm I'm not so sure - what are you comparing to? I think whenever Billy plays in bands he serves the songs excellently, if it needs to be just 'in the pocket' thats what he'll do. There are many examples of this on Mr Big albums...
23. Ooops! I actually meant to say I assume most of you HAVE listened to The Winery Dogs! Now Fixed!
24. I assume most of you have listened to Billy's latest venture - The Winery Dogs. 3 piece band featuring Mike Portnoy on Drums and Richie Kotzen on guitar / vocals. Whilst it's very AOR on times, it's a shining example that those techniques are still going strong today. Albeit by the same guy. As for why no clones, there are some guys around, check out Danny Growl for one. I think the main issue why there are fewer 'clones' is that it's a bloody difficult thing to nail correctly!
25. Nice! Bit far from me, but someone might get a bargain! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1994-5-FENDER-JAPANESE-STANDARD-PRECISION-BASS-Guitar-Sunburst-MIJ-P-Bass-JAPAN-/322180043526?hash=item4b036d5306:g:oB4AAOSwbYZXeTLr
