1.
..... There are plenty of great guides online and being able to set up your own instrument is a fantastic skill to have!
Probably the most important thing any of us will ever learn! I always go through all the formalities of setup on any Bass I buy, like a 'getting to know you' exercise....
2. Great question, and I'd say you should still capo it. The only reason for me is that's how I've always done it. Zero9 is most likely correct though, it probably makes no difference whe you have the zero fret. Just try it? Measure the relief with / without the capo and see if there's a difference?
3. Thanks for the replies so far everyone - looks as though I can take my pick...
4.
I have just used DHL through interparcel. You can insure for 2% of value.
I don't know if I should worry too much about insurance, apart from it getting lost I suppose. It's already broken
5.
Yep, if you search youtube for "Bass player falls off stage" I am the one with green strings. To be honest it is very funny.
Brilliant. That's right up there with Del Boy falling through the bar for me!....
6. Gotta send my ABM1000 into Ashdown for repair. Was left in the van last week and it's taken a dive at some point and is now sounding very sick.... Can anyone care to recommend a preffered courier for sending it in? Or are they all as bad as each other? I was just going to send it Royal mail guaranteed next day type of thing.... Cheers all, Lewis.
7. Thanks for that, it's a great looking Bass for sure...
8. Thread revival!! To the OP - Mark G3, did you get the T-Rod? How is it?
9.
I suppose I started listening to Billy back when he was doing shred stuff with Tony McAlpine and the like...but I don't disagree, he did do some tasteful stuff with Mr. Big. The Winery Dogs just seem to have a bit more groove. (I'm probably wrong)
Not at all, I'd agree and I much prefer The Winery Dogs stuff over anything from the Mr Big camp since 'Hey Man' (1996). I was delighted when I heard the Winery Dogs debut, no-one was making albums like that any more... Have to confess to being a little dissapointed with the 2nd album though - not necessarily the songs, but on the first half of the album the Bass is so low in the mix, it kinda spoils it for me
10.
.......... I think he has really dialled it down for The Winery Dogs....but that's probably more about the songs than anything else.
Hmmm I'm not so sure - what are you comparing to? I think whenever Billy plays in bands he serves the songs excellently, if it needs to be just 'in the pocket' thats what he'll do. There are many examples of this on Mr Big albums...
11. Ooops! I actually meant to say I assume most of you HAVE listened to The Winery Dogs! Now Fixed!
12. I assume most of you have listened to Billy's latest venture - The Winery Dogs. 3 piece band featuring Mike Portnoy on Drums and Richie Kotzen on guitar / vocals. Whilst it's very AOR on times, it's a shining example that those techniques are still going strong today. Albeit by the same guy. As for why no clones, there are some guys around, check out Danny Growl for one. I think the main issue why there are fewer 'clones' is that it's a bloody difficult thing to nail correctly!
13. Nice! Bit far from me, but someone might get a bargain! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1994-5-FENDER-JAPANESE-STANDARD-PRECISION-BASS-Guitar-Sunburst-MIJ-P-Bass-JAPAN-/322180043526?hash=item4b036d5306:g:oB4AAOSwbYZXeTLr
14. In Plymouth - Been modded / upgraded (delete as you see fit), but still a bargain for someone I reckon!: http://www.ebay.co.u...z0AAOSwRQlXejex
15.
fret board could do with a really good clean, would have thought they would have at least done that for that much money and that scratch plate is awful
Couldn't help but think the same about the bridge......
16.
It`s also got 3-bolt neck, thought that went out before 77 - certainly had on my 77 Precision.
I think the 3-bolt neck actually came in on the Jazz Bass around '75 and lasted til around '79. Not sure the precision ever had a 3-bolt neck... Looking closer again, I actually think the truss rod has split the fingerboard on it at some point at the first fret and that's why the first marker got changed. I think that would explain the lower price actually.
17. Also looking again, it looks like the first fret block marker is different to the others, truss rod worked been worked on by popping the block out?
18. Noticed this today: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Fender_Jazz_1977_Natural.html Price seems low at £1299? Aren't prices for these normally around £1800+, or even more from a shop? I know it's had the plate changed to stak knobs, and doesn't have the original case (not many do!), but I wouldn't expect that to devalue it by £500? Or am I missing something? BTW I'm not bringing this up because I'm thinking of buying, just seemed strange to me!!
19. I'm no expert, but I'd say it's a nice job on the relic (a lot of work has obviously gone into it), although I do think the BIN is high. The 'make offer' button is available though, if I wanted it I'd be starting offerings at about £300 for it.
20.
That's a Laser Electric Heritage, Matsumoku build. Nice bass and easily a bargain. Welcome to the world of Vintage MIJ! Jon.
I had one of those back in the 90's. Loved it and it was solid as a rock. Can't remember what took it's place, maybe a Fenix Jazz?
21. Think I'll bookmark this thread for reading every time I get a GAS attack. Some of these stories serve as good warning of what can happen when GAS gets bad!
22. Loved that Army green colour on one of the guitars they showed there....
23. Caught the highlights on Sky Arts this weekend - mixes sounded fine on that, but I expect a lot of post-production has gone into it...... Really enjoyed Halestorm - they've been around a long time but I'd never heard them before, that girl got some pipes! Jane's addiction's Chris Chaney's sound was spot on too.
24. I see hipshot have brought out a BA2 lookalike bridge - form an orderly queue! http://store.hipshotproducts.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=426 Must've been a short meeting to come up with that name too!
