1.
Read the description, Mark has said it was a custom order with black blocks instead of the pearloid. Im sure Mark isn't one to be duped or anything, but would Fender really take custom options on a signature bass? Or, at least, without megabucks?
This is why I'm asking to see if anyone on here knows the previous owner, what's been said above is correct, there was a FSR run of 100 USA Geddys in flame top see-through red, which had the black blocks and binding, but I can't find any reference anywhere to them doing the same with a black bodied version.. This was the red one they did - http://www.bassclubchicago.com/product_p/fendergeddyusltdcrsn15098003.htm I emailed Fender customer support asking the same questions - I got a reply yesterday, saying that they weren't sure about it, calling it 'interesting', and that they were going to look into it more and report back..with initial thoughts being that everything looked correct on it, and that the blocks and binding may have been a factory error..they did confirm though that there was no special run of black basses with black blocks/binding, only the red ones.. Maybe this one was getting built at the same time as the FSR red ones, and some bright spark at the factory bolted the neck onto a black body instead of a red one...?
2. Just spotted a used one on the Bass Direct Website. Looks nice but I thought they had pearl inlays and cream binding? The one in BD has black blocks and binding.... Anyone know the previous owner and therefore more about how this particular bass came to be different to spec? Some sort of custom order?
3. Sound like you've got it to me. You'll obviously have to remove some body wood too as the jazz pickup won't fit into the precision pickup body rout. Well, unless you put it in at an angle..
4. I say this every time when folks talk about the 4003 - Make sure you try playing in a standing position before committing your hard-earned. That's what buggered me up. Spent over an hour with one in the gallery (on a stool), bought it, took it on a gig and couldn't play it. Lack of arm chamfer was physically painful. Also the songs in the band at the time required the use of a pick, and even with the bridge pickup cover removed, I was still catching the pick on the pickup surround, which stands proud of the body. Sold it within 2 weeks of buying.
5. You definitely did the right thing. Doesn't sound like you missed out on much.
6.
Medley!!!!
We've done this - but we call them 'mashups', being 'down with the kids' and all that...
7. Lovely work Kert, living about 5 mins from you I'm gonna have to pay you a visit one of these days!
8.
All PM's replied, quite a staggering response. Between FB and here, since yesterday afternoon there have been 11 offers of trade, 2 "can I come and try it" and 3 offers to simply buy. Sadly all 3 offers to buy came from the continent, Germany, France and Italy. I am no longer prepared to send any of my gear outside of the UK. Thanks all, cheers, Karl.
I'm not surprised by this at all Karl. These are excellent Basses (I've had 3 of them pass through my hands over the years), yours is in one of the most rare finishes, and you've priced it realistically. GLWTS.
9.
Good point... How will I know whether the body is alder or ash?
If it's natural or a see through finish you'll be able to tell - Ash has a much more open grain, just do a google images search of ash vs alder and you'll learn all you need to know. If it's painted and the grain isn't visible, I'm not sure how you'd tell TBH. Although as others have said above, Ash is likely to be heavier. My guess would be it'd more likely to be alder if painted, and Ash if natural/see-through finish. This isn't 100% though obviously, you never know what may have been done to it finish-wise....might have been originally painted alder and then stripped & varnished, or been ash natural and then painted!
10.
outdoor sound is always going to be a compromise
This is true, I am however surprised if Iron Maiden's mix was poor. They've been doing festivals / stadia for donkeys years with the same soundman, who AFAIK travels everywhere with them...weird.
11. Steve bought a East preamp from me - excellent deal from start to finish - thanks a million Steve.
12. Got a complete Jazz control plate from John for my 75ri Jazz which had a east j-retro in it when I got it. Really wanted to convert it back to passive and John's kit was a great deal, received the next day and took 5mins to fit, with NO soldering required! Amazing! Now - what else of mine needs rewiring?! Thanks a million John!
13.
…and so, a thread about avoiding GAS turns into a thread about buying basses. It's like an AA meeting where someone turns up with a huge bottle of whisky. We are all doomed. *That's a nice PJ though..
Haha - I can stop anyti.. what's that? oooh shiny! buy it!
14. As the title says - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Fender-Jazz-Bass-Guitar-1962-Sunburst-Pre-CBS-/262432114113?hash=item3d1a2c45c1:g:e7cAAOSwubRXMxVA Just amazing. Dunno if I'd ever spend that much on a Bass, but given a lottery win, think I could justify it!
15. I had the PUMA 500 - I'd say with rack ears it's 1U.
16. These really are excellent - only moved my 5 string version on as I switched back to using 4 stringers....GLWTS
17.
Tanglewater..???
Overwater by tanglewood. I think tanglewood mass produce some instruments with the overwater badge on them.. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/82230-overwater-basses-by-tanglewood/
18. If I'm back from my stag do (it's Friday 15th in Bristol), I'll be there!
19.
I constantly lust after basses such as Jazzes, Stingrays, Precisons with Jazz pickups etc. And then I find out once I`ve bought them that I only like the sound of a Precision in my hands, everything else sounds wrong. So I`m trying to be strong and not get anything else - though an original Jazz Bass Special would be welcome, due to my much-liking of Duff McKagan.

http://bassdirect.co..._McKagan_2.html
I've had a few of those 80's Jazz Bass specials in my time. Back in about 2006 you could pick them up for about £225-£275, at least that's what I paid for the 3 that passed through my hands anyway. That one in BD is in excellent nick, but it has been modified, the bridge and pickups are non-original as far as I can tell. The original pickups in those Basses were Fender made, but had massive pole pieces like the Duncan SPB-3's. And the bridge was a black BBOT type. Like these shown on a TB thread (Sorry Lozz this won't help your GAS for one): https://www.talkbass...1984-87.716045/ Still great basses, TBX tone control as well, makes them sound like no other Fender. I wouldn't pay £650 for one though.
20. Been listening to demos of this on youtube (with headphones). It sounds awesome.
21. Thanks for all the input Gents - It's going to be Passive, the new wiring is on its way from Kiogon, and looks like I have a buyer for the J-Retro too. XLNT!
22. Yep, won't hurt to go up to F, but if you're still concerned you could try dropping a string gauge, i.e., if you normally use 45-105, try 40-100 etc EDIT: Or, try a capo, you might be OK with it. Dunno why your guitar player can't just do that too mind you?
23.
....The important bit, is that we have all learnt the six or so numbers at home first
THIS x1000000000!!!!! It's my biggest pet peeve! Book 3 hrs in a rehearsal room only for someone to turn up and say 'I've had a quick listen'
24.
Just saw a pic in a TB thread about the new MIM PJ, a replacement for the seafoam green one in sunburst. This could fit the bill! https://www.talkbass...epj-png.880585/
Thats a bit nice. I shouldn't be looking though, just got down to 6 basses so can't really be adding to that again!
