To each their own, but I'd recommend no less than a 1.5mm pick. Any thinner and the hand has to work harder to get the same sound. If the OP is gripping too tightly, then only time and practice will solve the issue.
I used 1.14 dunlop delrin (the pink one) for years, but being quite aggressive, I was shredding them in no time and switched to the 1.5 version (lilac) and found them not only to last longer but give a much more solid tone on a Bass string. When pick playing now, they're all I use.

Fool for your Loving - Whitesnake - Help
Certainly is!! Rehashed Here I Go Again is on "87"!

Yes, on Slip Of The Tongue - too fast, wrong key (A instead of G), no bass interest (it's my opinion that Steve Vai did everything apart from drums and vocals on that album, though I can't prove it). In recent Whitesnake it's back down to G, or even lower, to help the vocals.
Phew - the old grey matter is holding up! -
Oh God, here we go (again).

Yep I think that's something we'd all like to have the opportunity to do at least once! Have a blast!

I'm a big Neil Young fan, he's one of those guys you'll either love or hate for most. I remember someone once wrote into Q magazine (who would always give anything Neil Young put out 5 stars) saying 'If Neil Young recorded himself farting into a Jam Jar, would you give that 5 stars too?, to which they replied 'We'd have to hear it first'. Brilliant.
Btw, the original post asked for stories. The best I saw was at a Burns night supper. I was playing in the ceili band. As is customary, a bagpiper had been booked. He had already done several jobs by the time he arrived - pipers normally play for 10-15 mins to pipe in the haggis or similar and move on - and had obviously been given a generous dram at each of them. He was incapable of speech, but could still walk and play so that was fine. He piped in the haggis, which was placed on a table on stage. The MC stepped up to read Burns's Ode to a Haggis, whilst our hero played, marching on the spot and marking time. Unfortunately, his inebriation, combined with the effort of blowing, caused a loss of control of his bowels. He was wearing his kilt in the traditional manner, so the resultant log dropped between his feet. As he was marking time, he stepped on it, slipped back and his foot flew up. The log broke into pieces and the bits flew into the audience. Members of the band narrowly avoided a coronary from the merriment.
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!! I just laughed out (a bit too) loudly at that and am now getting looks in the office......
I listen using whatever method is most convenient at the time.
Same here - I've got a JBL iPod / iphone dock in one room (great for listening to Prog radio via the TeamRock app whilst having a big girly soak in the bath), Desktop PC with decent 2.1 somewhere else , Denon CD/AMP connected to my TV, or Sennheiser headphones with any of the above, everyones a winner!

£743 for a 1x12. No doubt they're virtually a work of art but that's an insane price.
I love your playing on the early Whitesnake stuff Mr M! I had a jam last year (with a view to form a band) where FFYL came up as a song. I checked if we were doing the superior original and was told yes of course. Turns out they thought the rehash from 87 was the original
I thought the rehashed version was on 'slip of the tongue'? It's been a long time so I could be wrong.... -
Enjoying this thread immensely! Being from the South Wales Valleys, for us it's a case of 'any phonics butt?', to which I always reply, 'next weeks band mate'. My covers band do modern pop, we have a (relatively) young female singer, and do Rita Ora, Meghan Trainor, Ellie Goulding etc...I remain amazed at the fact that some people are still surprised when I tell them 'No, we don't do any Oasis' after they've listened to the sort of set we have for the last hour or so. IMHO, in general your 'average' pub punter bases their judgment on how good your band is by the content of your setlist, rather than how well you play the songs. I've had this discussion with various people who call a band sh*t because they don't like the songs (which may actually be being played very well indeed). Usually Rock/metal fans (of which I am one) who are seeing a Pop Band. YMMV!

Looks good to me. Very nice.

Nice one twincam - anyone else?

OK so some quick work on the squier website shows that the VM's are made in Indonesia, and the CV's made in China.
-
Apologies if this has been covered, but does anyone know what are the differences for the above? I know the VM's are cheaper, but they seem to be going after a similar theme... Lot of love for the CV's, doesn't seem to be so much for the VM's? Opinions / thoughts / Facts most welcome!

What do you do when you've found The One?
LewisK1975 replied to Skinnyman's topic in General Discussion
My collection has been up to 11 at one point (not a lot by some standards I know, but it's the most I've ever had at any one time). I've tried most of the big 'classic' Bass brands (Fender, musicman, Ricks, warwick) over the years and I've come to the conclusion that for me 'the one' doesn't really exist. IMHO it's more a case of the 'right one for the job'. If you've only ever been in one band for your whole gigging life then maybe 'the one' does exist (think Steve Harris's Precision, which is clearly 'the one' for him). After all these years (25+ years gigging), I've finally found what works for me is having a Precision & a Jazz that I really love playing, using either one as the gig suits. YMMV of course! -
Mine arrived today When you use just the one do you have it raised or on the floor ? & How many gigs did hey take to break in properly ? cheers .
If using one it's just been on the floor up til now. Have been considering some sort of stand / kick back mind you.. Regards break-in I'd say they were broken in by the end of the 3rd gig I did with them.
-
I've got 2 supercompacts and they're great - one is easily enough for all gigs. For some gigs I've actually taken both in for aesthetics but only plugged the top one in. Works a treat.

Soundchecking is a funny old game at pub/club/function band level. Also depends if you're running full FOH or backline/vocal PA only. We run full FOH & the longest surviving members of the band don't like soundchecking - so at the very least, I ALWAYS do a line check of every PA input, just to make sure everything is on at least. I do get a little pissed off when people refuse to soundcheck, and then complain about stage volume (and don't forget it can be either too loud or too quiet!)

Done.
Dare I say it, perhaps more innovation on the 4003 (I realise they did it on other models) and some modern tweaks could make the 4003 an even bigger hit for Ric. I know its a tried and tested classic design, but I sometimes think if they just went all out and made a modern 4003 with bulletproof quality and tweaks to make it comfortable, they could do extremely well. I'm talking things like truss rod wheel at the end of the neck and just go for a normal truss rod, sort the pickup surround out, less fussy paint and binding, same pickups and elecs, same style but some contouring to let it fit to the body better even at the expense of some binding, offer a few new colours, hike the price, address the cramped string/neck feel, address the neck shape. Basically, make it sound exactly the same, look almost the same, but make it easier to use!
Hallelujah! I was going to post much the same thing but couldn't be arsed to type out everything that needs changing. Thanks!!
Depending on condition, £600-£750.
^^This for a private sale, expect to pay a little more in a shop.

Ricks and Jazzes getting a lot of mention here - here's my take on both, as a player whose go to has always been a Precision. Rick 4003 - Best looking Bass I've ever 'worn'. Completely uncomfortable to play for me. Lack of body chamfers and that ridiculous bridge pickup surround made it a total fight to finish a gig, even with the 'over the top' cover removed. Jazz - Always loved the sound of them, Played many but always drifted back to the precision, mainly because of the necks being so different in comparison. Then I discovered the ones which have 'U' shaped necks, and found that even with the narrower nut and string spacing, the neck sits really nicely in the hand. Got myself a 1975 Jazz a few weeks ago and I'm totally besotted with it. Now I just need a good backup to it (there's a thread there I reckon!) YMMV!

IEMS being seriously considered by my band.
