I bought the original Billy Sheehan EBS pedal. It is a nice bit of kit but I really didn't take to the voicing of the drive and felt that even with the blending option the drive resulted in a bit of low end loss. This isn't me having a go at either Billy Sheehan or EBS, as obviously the pedal was designed with meeting Billy's approval not mine! I think that the 'phase invert' switch on the new model is probably a reaction to my issues though.
I read a few posts and exchanged a few messages with other users who had commented that the with the pedal on, the clean and distortion channels are actually out of phase with each other and this was the cause for the low end loss being felt. As some of you will know Billy uses a stereo rig setup with all of his low end coming from a separate neck pickup on his bass routed to one amp, and the high end coming from the split P-Pickup, routed to a different amp. He wouldn't notice any low end loss because there's no low end on the signal which is routed through the sig pedals in his rig.... FWIW I agree that EBS probably knew this (I'm not having a go at EBS or BS either, like you said, it was designed with BS and his setup specifically in mind) and this phase 'invert' switch is actually putting the clean and dirty channels back in phase with each other. The same result can also be achieved by putting another pedal which flips the phase into the distortion loop ( I used a £20 EHX LPB-1).

Yep I'd thought about the RW Jazz when I was looking for a Jazz recently - trouble is I have a penchant for maple fingerboards - now if Fender did a RW 70's Jazz with a maple fingerboard, block inlays and binding to match, colour me interested! -

I agree with you 100% Marc - I've got the same model as you (albeit with the unmmodified neck) and it is definitely the best Precision I've ever had. And I've had a few......I'm only in Bridgend if you ever want to A/B yours.. -
So I've been fancying a 70's Jazz for a while. Toyed with the idea of getting a new re-issue / USA Geddy Lee. Then was browsing my usual sites (bass direct, bass gear, wunjo, andy baxter, bass gallery) and came across a YOB Jazz on the Bass Gallery website. They also had a '77 in exactly the same colour / neck combo so I decided to go and have a look at them. Spent a while A/B'ing the 75 and 77 and preferred the 75, the neck just felt a little deeper in my hand (more 'U' shaped maybe) than the 77 and it's certainly what I'd been looking for looks and sound-wise. Talked it over with John and subsequently found out that the 2 Basses I'd been trying were commission sales, both owned by a certain Steve Miles (owner of Basschat.co.uk). So - I'd found a YOB Jazz in my favoured colour / neck combo, which had already had a Badass II added (probably would have done that myself anyway) and got myself a few bits thrown into the deal - seemed a bit of a no-brainer to me really.. So I drove it home in its rather nice (albeit non-original) case. Spent some time on it, gave it a spruce up and re-string, setup to my taste (action was really low, I like to dig in a bit so needed a tweak) and she's ready to go!
Thanks very much for that - I did consider similar, but I want to keep boxes and leads down to an absolute minimum... just having one extra jack lead kind of appeals... having said that, just one combo and one cable would be the ultimate. I ask only out of curiosity, it's very unlikely I'll ever need to actually run two combos in the real world.
Yeah I understand - I'd love to run a stereo rig with one amp doing lows and one amp doing high frequencies, but I think my bandmates would laugh their heads off if I showed up to a gig at the Dog & Duck with a 2 amp setup.....they just don't understand

My OCD just went into orbit for the overhang. Great looking gear mind you..

Or maybe an ABY box, something like this, will do exactly what you want to do, and they don't cost a lot.. :-

Personally I'd say it depends on your own circumstances - If your band has full FOH and you only need an amp for on-stage monitoring, small lightweight stuff is the way forward. Certainly too there's plenty of small lightweight options around nowadays which can more than handle their own for Pub / club size venues. Just getting my opinion in before this turns into another class D vs SS vs Valve thread and people start saying 'heft' a lot.

I was looking at these back last year - hit the same problem as you, no-one has one! Not much online review-wise either.....Ended up buying a Tecamp PUMA 500.
Cheers Lewis, even better that the cab only weighs 37kg! Sounds huge and thunderous :-)
Wow thats light for a 610, only 7.5kg heavier than the Barefaced Six10 - thats impressive.
I think they must have been playing in London somewhere yesterday as there were loads of kids on the tube with slipknot t-shirts on when I went home from work... It seems Metal is still very popular with teenagers Was great to see so many of them excited about seeing a band that play actual instruments.
They played the Ally Pally I think.

Met Billy Sheehan a couple of times and also had some message exchanges with him about gear problems I was having, he's an incredibly nice bloke and more than happy to talk to anyone, and what he doesn't know about Basses / Amps / Effects etc isn't worth knowing..and he's happy to share his knowledge..
As well as advertising check out local jam nights - go along and watch for a couple of times, talk to the folk running it, be open about your ability. Most of the jams I know are very supportive places, and often the best musicians there will be the ones that help you along the most.
IMHO - This is possibly the best way out there to hone your chops and get comfortable playing to a crowd. You get to play with loads of different people, different styles of music etc... I started playing Bass at 14 - didn't join a Band until I was 19, but stayed in that same Band until fizzled out when I was about 27 (a whole other thread that could be too). My point being that for those 8 years, all I played was the songs we wrote - and when the band stopped , I became acutely aware of how my playing had not progressed at all in that time. After that I basically barely played at all for a couple of years. A good friend of mine (actually the same one who taught me the basics when we were 14) had become a bit of a face on the local Jam nights suggested I should go along to a few. I'll never forget how my guts felt when I was beckoned up to play for the first time after being out of the game for a while. But I did it and kept going and soon became a bit of a face myself! Even formed a covers band out of meeting people on Jam nights which lasted for 4 years. I've been to a few however which can feel a bit of a closed affair - you just know that the person who's running the night is gonna play most of the night and only his best mates are gonna get a look in. But there are good ones out there, run by good people! -
No issues with my 500.

Yeah I've heard those KXB heads are a bit of a gem - unfortunately out of production now though so wouldn't want to put myself through that (what if I really really liked it and couldn't get one?!?!), thanks for the offer tho! The reason I'm looking at the TC RH heads is mainly because of the feature set - built in tuner, compressor, tubetone, semi-parametric eq etc.. My main problem with the PUMA is that it does't match my cabs frequency wise - the treble control is set at 8khz and my Barefaced super compacts only respond up to 4khz-ish so I was struggling for top end. Silly mistake on my part really - I ended up getting a preamp pedal to get the top end I needed amongst a few other pedals so I'm basically only using the PUMA as a power amp / DI, and have also ended up with quite a big pedal poard.. If the RH fits the bill sound-wise it'll not only be a better frequency range match for the cabs, but I'll also be able to shift a few pedals too...
-
So after the massive response on here I tried my local facebook page and came up trumps within a few hours. Couple of top blokes in Cardiff who own an RH450 and an RH750 respectively both offered to let me try theirs out! Happy days.
I used them with 2 different cab set ups, so difficult to accurately compare. In my view the 750 sounded much better, but maybe that's just my personal tone preference, I like a bit of top end sizzle and the 750 with its tweeter tone is better in that dept. To me the 750 sounded more 'open' if that makes sense, again that could just be down to tone preference. To put it simply, I don't think I'd rush out to buy another 450 but I would have another 750.
Thanks! I've got the opportunity to try both over the next few days (some very generous chaps down in South Wales) so I shall find out for myself!

Saw Slipknot on Monday in Cardiff motorpoint arena. With Suicidal Tendencies supporting. Top gig and Slipknot's new Bassist has a few lovely Status basses..

I had an Ampeg B5-R head that went to 2ohms. Bloody good amp actually - had a clean and overdrive channel or you could blend them together. Very cool!
