Great responses but i think most of u have missed the point. My point was that it seems old fashioned analogue recording techniques reached a peek in the early eighties, especially on the pop stuff. Nothing to do with dig, or mp3's or whatnot. Listening to those old tunes via the PC through phones and inspite of all the compression the signal has gone through today you can still hear what I call the "soft seperation" of instruments, it all sounds kinda chocolatey but crisp and that is all to do with studio technique, personel and above all.....money! It takes a lot of money to record music properly.....I dont hear it today anymore, not even in live TV. As I said before it all sounds to me anyway grey...mushy. Horrible!
I tried to point this out Notable9, but no one seemed to listen!! B
All I know is my iPod played through our EV PA system, sounds amazing. I don't claim to know all about sound quality, but I think a lot of folk join the emperors new clothes bunch who bemoan the humble MP3 . What I'm saying is, when played through an amazing sound system, pretty much anything sounds good!
There seems to be some cross purpose here? The OP said he was listening on a computer? So the final playing media was not the problem, iPods, MP3, etc, are convenient & can sound great. The original criticism seemed to be about how the music was recorded & produced. The compression of MP3 was not the issue, The record everything louder than everything else as cheap as possible & "blast me subwoofer!!!" is! GIGO!!! B
It was all done in professional studios using high quality, often analogue, equipment by people who knew what they were doing, not knocked up by some herbert with a music "degree" from his local "University" (technical college as was) on a laptop in his bedroom.....
+ 1000 and Amen to to this. Spot on Rhys Brendan

A very interesting lesson in soloing for beginners ...
Sonic_Groove replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Not exactly John McLaughlin is he!! How to play solo's without thinking? Practice, Practice, Practice B -
Crikey Blue, I thought Milwaukee was in the States! I didn't realise is was on another planet! where musicians get paid & get a monthly payroll!! Maybe I should move there! Most in "Blighty" I would bet struggle to compensate petrol money -- never mind strings, etc. Brendan
I took most of it down with the intention of rerecording everything, wiped all the stuff off my soundcloud. I've just picked up a Boss ME-50B I was intending to use for putting a new batch up, hopefully I'll get some time over xmas. I did a lot of this sort of stuff when I first got back into bass after a long lay off but i've been cocentrating on band stuff for the last year or so and it's kinda slipped away...there are still a couple of old videos up on youtube.
That's real nice Rob, would like to hear it on the Wal!! I use 6 & 4 string basses I seem to have a symmetry obsession & could never get on with 5's. I love both but like the honesty & rawness of the 4's B

Thanks jazzyvee but that's too many variables for me! I am coming to the conclusion White Cloud mentioned. For price & assurance of what I want I am best to wait out for the best/newest JayDee I can find & retire the old gal to home/studio duties (I have other great basses, but the J has something special I need at the moment Brendan
MB1. Looks like a job for... Alembic?
Yeah but I was looking for something a little more errrmmmm Cheaper!! LOL I actually tried an Alembic SC sig at the Bass Centre (in the mid 90's) & thought my JD (and the one they had in for comparison) was livelier & more organic (may have been a naff 'bic with dead string though) I would love a 'bic but "loads o money!!!" B

My JayDee is getting old (aren't we all!!!) & it is becoming a worry using it live & transporting/carrying it. Has anyone who has ever owned a JayDee Supernatural got any ideas on a current available new bass that sounds & feels similar? (New JayDee are a 2 year wait) I know most JD owners may have wanted it as a slap machine & will say Status, I have a couple of Status basses & they are great. However what I am looking for is that other JD quality the beautiful back pick-up & passive tones, the organic woody sounds, plus the feel of the thing. I guess I am looking for 21 frets? Would an Xotic jazz do the job? A Spector? WHY. Any Ideas??? !!! Brendan
Markbass, Aguilar, etc etc They don't make guitar amps. What's everyone's problem with Marshall not really putting their all into bass amps.
Marshall now own Eden so Eden bass stuff is Marshall & marketed by them B

I would send it back. I did -- The fan was louder than the amp to me. Brendan -
Why not just get a Euro plug adapter from Amazon or the like? http://www.amazon.co...0?ie=UTF8&psc=1 And use the Zoom power supply you have? B
I suspect same factory with different finish (Ashdown vinyl vs Eden carpet) and different badge, yes As for the mixed reviews, bear in mind the Mi10 is £159 new, it will never compete sonically with higher-priced, better engineered cabs which aren't built to a price point. Whether that compromise is something you can deal with is unfortunately difficult to judge without using one yourself!
Yeah that is what I meant. I forgot to add the Ashdown is better priced new. B
-
Some mixed reviews then! It looks to me like Ashdown have cornered the market for affordable micro-cabs. I can't find anything comparable for anywhere near the same price. I'd love to be proved wrong though!
The Eden 1 x 10 is very similar & looks very similar. I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't made in the same factory?!!
The bass playing is fine. I just don't like the vocals and it's all a bit too slick for me.
This In fact IMHO the music is insipid dross Sorry B
Gibson Thunderbird, probably still using Hiwatt at the time.
From April 1994 Bassist interview “…by ‘Quadrophenia’ and Who By Numbers I was playing Gibson Thunderbirds. I felt I was getting stuck in a rut, using all the treble. So I changed to Sunn Colosseum[sic: Coliseum] power amps and a German preamp called a Stremp [sic: Stramp], and took up with the Thunderbirds. Eventually I found that I had developed a new playing style, then discovered Alembic basses and went back to playing with treble. I go backwards and forwards like that all the time.” B
I've been looking at analogue synths. I
How about this?!!! B

Have you tried turning down the volume on your bass between tunes? P bass pickups are great but do pick up everything! turning volume down will attenuate PU. You could also try a volume pedal for extra slickness! Brendan

RIP John, I have only just caught up with this, one of the greats beautiful feel & tone. Will listen to the "Gusto" Roxy albums later (and probably cry) Love & Peace Brendan
