Haven't both threads fully but I dont understand what is so funny? The guy can play bass, he is a bass player, we are bass players ALL of different abilities and styles. If you think his confidence out weighs his ability then that should be regarded as a positive tool for self development I would think. He can slap he can play finger style his compositions are his own presentation of his musical ability. If you dont have anything constructive to say, leave it alone and move along dont point and laugh at the musicians you dont appreciate. A wealth of rich and varied music is what we should all want. Leo
+ 1000 IMHO --- The X factory mentality has no place in music -- Music is not a competition!!! B

Different strokes for different folks -- I think Johns playing on that is great -- each instrumentalist should be allowed artistic expression or we may as well listen to machines... B
I thought that too, but I guess those are pretty much industry standard kit and you'd know what you're getting. They (Wire) must be used to getting promoters to get that kind of stuff in for them, I suppose.
You would have thought Wire would have their own kit? They have been going since 1976!! 12XU B
This is true! What the purpose of lying on your back was I have no idea. A pretentious statement of some sort perhaps? Still a great bassist! Dan
Erm because he could not stand-up (or sit-up in chair)...
<quote> The humble bass guitarist is an under-appreciated beast. Yet try to imagine the last six decades of popular music without James Jamerson, Paul McCartney, John Entwistle, Jaco Pastorious or John Paul Jones, to name but a few. To celebrate the launch of MusicRadar's dedicated bass channel, we asked you to submit your nominations for the greatest electric bassist of all time via Facebook, Twitter and the comments on our original call-to-arms article. </quote> Link: http://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/the...all-time-279007 I don't agree with the results, or in fact, any "greatest" lists, but it's quite interesting none-the-less.
???
This sums it up perfectly for me. Why should the forum have to bare the responsibility of policing avatars to protect individuals from something that perhaps they shouldn't be doing in the first place. Especially when alternatives are already available.
Agreed When you are "at work" you should be working! If I was paying someone, I would be just as angry if they were looking at pictures of kittens as I would pictures of breasts! B

Improvisation on Bass - Completely Pointless
Sonic_Groove replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I understand the post is intended to be provocative. So on that understanding... I've got to say... Unfortunately, I can't say what I really think . But... I couldn't disagree more. In the 60s & 70s improvisation was commonplace and often made for some "magic" shows... and the audience certainly "got it". There are probably still bands out there doing it. Because you don't "get it" doesn't mean others don't. My current band (only been 25 years ) are fairly well known outside the UK and have a reputation for a good live show - due partly to the fact there is a good deal of improvisation - no 2 nights are the same. The keyboard player, guitarist, drummer are totally on top of their instruments - If I stuck to the parts played in rehearsals it just wouldn't work. Mostly the other guys lead the way, but then sometimes Ill play a groove that will take us somewhere else. You can't really meddle with the main part of the song... but there is certainly a time and a place, and should be encouraged IMO
+1 and to add... "Jamersons style was a distinct departure from the typical bass role in previous years, which largely relied on the root and fifth notes, and was fairly rhythmically simple. Jamerson built on this foundation and incorporated more melodic lines, at times almost serving a complementary role to the lead vocal. He also tended to play a lot more syncopated parts, and was known to improvise many of his lines. It was these characteristics that informed much of the "Motown Sound"." {Enough said!} Click for reference B -

Absolutely.
I've not seen the new interview but, have heard Stan say it in interviews before. Colin is fantastic IMHO should be a lot more renowned. Brendan -

-
It's not been the same for a long time. I've struggled to overcome it and adapt but I just can't do it. For years I was happy but I have just recently been told that what ever I do or have done, it just won't sound as good as if I had an Ampeg SVT head. I now feel a failure, not only to myself but to all my fans who I have subjected them to the non Ampeg SVT tone. How they will ever forgive me. For years they surely were just listening to the bass as all music lovers do and I have clearly led them up the garden path with an inadequate non Ampeg SVT tone. I think its time now to bow out, ashamed and as a failure as a non Ampeg SVT playing bass player. I just hope others can find the strength to carry on with there rubbish sounding Traces, Ashdowns, Genz Benz, Mark Bass etc amps. Be strong boys, think of Blitey and I'll see you on the other side.
Since "the enlightenment" I have burned all the records and CDs I had by artists who coned us by using none SVT amps. I realised as a bass player there are a few of us that have previously been foolish enough to use Pods & the like to get the sound we want (I know there is one member here who only uses a Pod for amp duties!). Worry not a few of us are hard at work on the Dave tribute non solid-state SVT bass pod: B
anyone watch queens of the stone age on red button last night? fantastic if only funds would have let me be there!! a lush sound coming from the bassists rig and aray of hollow bass guitars, anyone catch the make of his stack?(looked like an ampeg, but wasnt)sounded sweet.
Epiphone Jack Cassidy was the nice sounding bass, the woolly one was a Gibson. The rig looked like one old SVT the other case looks like a rack with preamp/compressor & effects, two 8x10s. QOTSA were great. Pendulum were great too (but don't tell my daughter she will only say "told you so!!" )
