2.
I would have done but the band i just got rejected from deleted their blog so next time i'll try posting something.
1. Sure you haven't got something sat around in your sent mail folder? 2. If they deleted their blog, then that might suggest a whole heap of reasons why they are no longer looking for a bass player right now. Don't take that one personally. S.P.
  3. I have a suggestion: paste in an example of the kind of responses that you send to these bands. Then we can tell you if you're doing anything wrong. S.P.
  4. My first festival slot yesterday, and I thought we were pretty good. All the band members came off stage with an air of "that was one of our best gigs ever" and the audience response throughout was definitely positive. There's still room for improvement though. The set list needs tightening up to excise the weaker items, and we need to work on speeding up changes between songs. The frontman switches instruments relatively frequently, which is damn awkward - if it was anyone else in the band, then the frontman could take the opportunity to do a bit of banter. I think we need to work on extended alternate intros/endings so that he can do his instrument switches in the meantime. The violinist also seems to have occasional tuning issues which seem to require a few minutes of twanging with the guitarist when they do arise. I made a couple of minor mistakes, the only significant one was on one song that we didn't bother going over at our last rehearsal because "we all know that one." In retrospect I should have stuck my hand up at that point and insisted on doing it anyway. Sound onstage was good, and by all accounts, the sound out front was good too. Backing vocals were reportedly a little quiet, but I can only assume that was a deliberate decision by the sound man, and I'm sure that he set them to the volume that was appropriate. S.P.
  5. Sorry I'm not going to be able to make it, but I hope it goes really well for you. S.P.
  6.
How loud is it? the 1000 version is it good enough, loud enough, to be used on gigs?
Depends what cab you put it with, and what kind of gigs you are doing. S.P.
  7. Mill and Old Swan in Minster Lovell, you say? That's Minster Lovell in Oxfordshire, right? The band with the female singer doing the wedding? Saturday night? You're not going to believe this, but... it wasn't me. S.P.
  8.
Quick question: how many of you would like to have someone doing set-ups at the Bash?
I'd be interested in having a crash course in doing setups. S.P.

    Merton

I bought a flight case from Mert and he was great to do dealings with. Top bloke. S.P.
  10.
YMMV? Sorry, I'm not l33t enough to understand that.
YMMV S.P.
  11.
This fits well with the fact that, for instance, the Midget is just as loud as the Compact but goes lower
Is this right? I thought that the Compact was louder than the Midget, AND goes lower? S.P.
  12. As a general rule, lightweight doesn't come cheap. Ashdown's Little Giant and Superfly are the cheapest of the lot, but have received mixed reviews. What's your budget? Does your replacement rig have to match your existing rig in spec (300W into 2x10) or can you accept a compromise? S.P.
  13.
After a gig I played on Saturday where I was supplied with a 15w Kustom Bass combo, I was wondering if anyone else on here has had the same painstaking experiences? It truly was hell, I couldn't hear a single note I was playing and had a total lack of confidence because of it. The guy who supplied backline was thoroughly accosted afterwards! Oh well, it was a one-hand lift I guess. Danny
Same thing happened to me back in February, only it was a 10w combo. S.P.
  14.
while I would never turn down a decent free set up, I do actually want to be able to do it for myself. I know the basics, but applying the knowledge under the eye of someone who knows what is meant to be happening would be invaluable.
Took the words right out of my mouth. S.P.
  15.
are you going to make a small portable amp at all to go with your cabs?
Alex recommends the GB Shuttle 6.0. S.P.
  16.
Alberts music shop Twickenham. (local)
Give them a call. They may invite you in for a replacement. Failing that, they'll definitely know who to get in touch with. S.P.
  17. Nice story. Was that really the end? HJ: Also, I hope you don't think I'm being picky, but what about the pickguard? Him: You got a problem with the pickguard? HJ: Well, a bit. I'm just a little surprised that Fender did mirror pickguards in 67. Him: Well, they didn't. But what we did is we took the original pickguard, melted it down, mixed in some silver, and then reformed it so that it would have a mirrored effect. HJ: I see. Is the built-in navigational compass original too? Him: Of course. Depending upon what you mean by "original". S.P.
  18. I will be there too. Will bring £10, a Hartke LH500 and a Barefaced Compact. And probably a fretless Aria Sinsonido, as it is the bass in my collection that is least likely to make other bass players yawn. S.P.
  19. Can't find out much about Spider guitars, but if the reviews on this page are anything to go by, it's not worth owning, no matter how cheap. This is the website for the factory where it was (possibly) made. S.P.
  20.
a small amp which I believe works
Oh really. S.P.
  21. Genuine. Genuine crook, that is. Guffaw! S.P.
  22. What kind of P is it? Seriously, there's not really much you can do about it. Sit tight, keep practising, and keep putting yourself in situations where you get to meet other musicians. S.P.
  23.
Lesson to be learned.... always quote a fee...even if it is friends so you can cover yourself somewhat if you have to pull out...
Not when you're doing it as a wedding present. To be honest, I don't think that pulling out was ever going to be a realistic option. I think that in the midst of my panicking 2 months ago, I neglected to consider one basic fact about the bride: that she'd prefer the band at her wedding to contain two of her oldest friends (both of whom are not untalented musicians), than to be a polished, professional function band with whom she has no history. It's just the kind of person that she is. The ceremony was beautiful, she looked fantastic, all this is true, but the meal was hog roast and strong cider, because impressing people isn't on her agenda. It's more of a fortuitous by-product. S.P.
