Only problem is that this kid's a lefty - there just aren't as many bargains out there!
If he's only just starting to play, then he'd probably be best off learning to play right-handed. He'll be grateful in the long run. S.P.

Nice. Looking forward to seeing more. S.P.
I've got a motorbike. I can fit a bass, a trout and a perch in my backpack.
I've got a mountain bike. I can fit my Aria Sinsonido on my back. S.P.

That sounds pretty bad. Thanks for the warning. S.P.
Oh and don't ever agree to play at at the brewery tap - it's sh*t
Are you just saying that because you had a nightmare night on Saturday, or is it actually worth avoiding on its own merits? S.P.

I've just seen the news on your myspace page - did something awful happen on Saturday night? S.P.

Band intros. And on bass... "The Fat Bloke"...
Stylon Pilson replied to thepurpleblob's topic in Theory and Technique
Play the bass riff from the outro of "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac. It's something like this:
G | - - - - - - - - | - - - - - - - - | - - - - - - - - | - - - - - - - - | D | - - - - - - - - | - - - - - - - - | - - - - - - - - | - - - - - - - - | A | - - - - - - - 2 | 3 - 2 - - - 2 - | - - - - - - - - | - - - - - - - - | E | 5 - - - - - 5 - | - - - 5 3 5 - - | 0 - - - - - - - | - - - - - - - - |
-
Recommendations for a bass stand for two pls
Stylon Pilson replied to Marky L's topic in Accessories and Misc
You have a couple of options - either a double stand that holds two instruments back-to-back (I have one of these that I take to gigs) or something like the Warwick Rockstand where you slot the guitars in sideways, as it were. You can get those in 3, 5 or 7 capacity (I have the 5, which I used to use for storing my guitars at home, but I haven't used it since I got wall hangers). S.P. -
Anyone got one? I'm tempted to get a fretless for noodling..... OK or pants?
Got one, like it. Yes, buy one. S.P.

As the owner of an Ashdown Electric Blue, I'll agree with the above - it would be ideal for your needs. Unless you are dead set on buying new, go second hand. You'll come in well under your budget, and if you change your mind, you'll be able to sell it on for basically the same amount that you paid for it. S.P.

Last night was one of those end-of-the-bill, playing-to-a-nearly-empty-room specials. Thank heavens that I enjoy playing bass so much, otherwise I would be utterly narked. And the crowd that we had, while small, were very enthusiastic. S.P.

Grotesque. But I hear that's quite common with "Tennessee" brand instruments. S.P.
Yep, all that talk of sustain and clarity... bogus, what it's really about is that moment when you're at home had a nice warm bath, drying off with a towel round your waist and you pick of the bass for a tiny bit of practice... Ye Gods that bolt-on plate is cold! And poly finishes are pretty icy too. Neck-thru instruments were clearly developed with the naked player in mind. A square of cold metal to the abdomen kills the whole warm and fuzzy vibe (man)...
Yet Nick Oliveri still plays a Precision. He must be a masochist. S.P.

I didn't vote, because, as others have remarked, it's not usually a direct choice between the two, so I didn't know which of the first two to go for. S.P.
I have a epi nikki sixx blackbird, a white epi tbird and a les paul bass and i use a laney rb9 stack. recenltly i been getting an earth buzz from all 3 bass guitars, i've tried different cables and other amps in different locations but the buzz is still there sugesting it lies in the guitars does anyone have any ideas why all 3 should get this at the same time.
I was also trying to track down a similar buzz that was afflicting all guitars, all amps and all cables. Turned out to be the overhead lights downstairs that were on a dimmer switch. If all three guitars seem to have acquired a problem simultaneously, then the problem is almost certainly not in the guitars. S.P.
He would be howling for my blood. Custom features are both a blessing and a curse for him. He doesn't make a lot of money on the additional features people request and the extra time he spends doing them suck up any earnings he had from making the instrument. However the custom bits do provide him with some interest outside the normal models.
It probably gives him a bit of extra positive publicity, but judging by the build times that people are reporting, it sounds like extra publicity is probably quite low on his priorities list right now. S.P.
Plus, I think we're paying the $75 license fee so that Jon can get support if he comes across any difficulties.
Kcha, difficulties? Just put the frets in at an angle! How hard can it be? S.P.

What the hell is a "pocket", more so a "deep pocket"?
Stylon Pilson replied to thepurpleblob's topic in General Discussion
In the pocket = good timing Deep in the pocket = also good timing, but even better than the previous guy, so I need a new superlative. It's a bit like A* at GCSE. S.P. -
Particularly thinking of Fender here, were thumb rests optional? When did they switch to being above the strings and when did they stop doing them altogether?
They used to be below the strings because back then, bassists played "thumb-style" rather than "finger-style". They got rid of them altogether when they realised how utterly unnecessary they are. IMO. S.P.
Our licensing fee is $75.00, US for a single instrument paid in advance of construction. Production runs of 10 instruments or more are licensed at $55.00 per instrument. Instruments built outside of the U.S. do not require licensing unless they are sold in the U.S.
Enlightening reading. S.P.

Stylon Pilson replied to thepurpleblob's topic in General Discussion
I keep reading this expression. It used to only seem to appear in American publications but has now crept over here... "his playing is deep in the pocket" etc.. What on earth does it mean? As is traditional I should ask if there are any other bass-related expressions that are utterly baffling?
It means that it has the qualities of a 5p piece and a nugget of fluff. S.P. -
.. all will be revealed in good time I'm just waiting for Jon to confirm that he's received my deposit, and that he has the green light from the U.S. patent holder for this 'feature'. You've all heard of it/seen it, just not on a Shuker
Gibson Robot? S.P.

Makes complete sense now you say it, OldGit. Thank you. S.P.
Just got a new battery, all sorted, it works great (with a brighter sound than before)! Thanks for all the advice guys, muchly appreciated
To prolong battery life, unplug the instrument lead from the body of the bass when you're not playing it. I don't know whether you are already aware of this. S.P.
