1.
I've never heard anything by Adele.
Do you never listen to music stations on the radio? She's very difficult to avoid.
2. For me he's one of those niche speciality players. Whilst I admire his skills and inventiveness it's not something I've ever felt the desire to incorporate into my own playing and I can't really see how it would ever fit into any band situation I've ever been in.
3. Just got back from watching Kamasi Washington and the Next Step at Birmingham Institute. Really can't remember the last time I enjoyed a gig that much but I suspect I was a teenager. I got soaked on the way to the venue, there was about 10 minutes worth of drum duet/solo between the two drummers and I missed the last train home and had to pay £50 for a taxi and it was still one of the best gigs I've ever seen.
4.
This is what they should be selling then surely?!
I'm wondering is this might be a job for Maruszczyk.
5.
Switched it on to catch a few minutes of Adele and ended up watching the whole set.
Exactly the same here. I don't think I'll be rushing out to buy the album but I thought she was outstanding live.
6.
Are there people who would claim to be able to hear 2 recordings of one of each fretboard type and be able to tell which is which?
Many years ago I read an interview with a guitarist called Eric Johnson who talked about the tonal differences between different guitar lead jack plug materials and how he used a different type of lead depending on whether he was recording rhythm or lead. There may be people who's ears are sensitive enough to tell the difference between maple and rosewood, but for most of us I suspect the preference comes from tactile feel and aesthetics.
7.
This is great guys, thank you . My next question is this. What difference does the fingerboard make? Maple or Rosewood? This isn't a wind up by the way, I'm genuinely interested
Maple looks nicer. (Unless you prefer rosewood).
8.
I have had a similar internal debate this morning about posting in the Morrissey thread... Thus far it appears to be some enthusiasts suggesting tracks for a new listener of the band... all very good natured I suspect that despite the thread being the best opportunity for me to use the phrase "monumental bellend" since the recent Kanye West thread, doing so is not really much of a contribution and probably not in the community spirit...
I had a similar dilemma and reached the same conclusion. Time and a place and all that. And that time will surely come.. Edit. And for the record, Jazz. Although I did spend about 20 years hating the look of them, they are now my undisputed favourite basses. Which just goes to show... something.
9.
Why is it not practical?
I got stuck on full version after I had to reset my tablet to default settings. There's too many links too close together for a small screen, I kept accidently clicking user profiles when I was trying to look at threads.
10. I got as far as clicking on the picture of the jazz bass, at which point it told me 'no results'. It's possible it's a browser/compatability problem at my end, otherwise they should never have taken the site live when even a cursory check would have shown it's not working.
11. I've played more guitar in bands than I have bass, always thought of myself as a bass player though, I just sort of ended up getting drafted to do vocals and I can't play bass and sing at the same time and I feel naked unless I'm holding something.
12. I hadn't heard of him until about a year ago. Since then mainly through his work with Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus & Kamasi Washington he's become one of my most listened to bass players. I've still not made up my mind on his solo stuff, it's definitely very interesting, but I'm not sure how much I actually like it, though Apocalypse is definitely a more accessible album to me than Golden Age of the Apocalypse.(His first couple of albums have confusingly similar names).
13.
I think my bathroom scales are dodgy too... they keep telling me I'm far heavier than I was in my 20s...
You can borrow mine. They once told me I'd lost 6lbs in a day ( hooray) but put 8lbs on 2 days later (boo).
14. I've got a VM 70s which is spot on 9lbs on my dodgy bathroom scales.
15. Leo Sayer should sue them both.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_96uyfmqgo
16. They have or have had loads of signature guitars, van halen, albet lee, steve morse, st vincent. Apparently they just don't do signature basses (apart from the big al although that was a bit of a weird one as they used the the albert Lee shape, but I don't think there was any suggestion that he actually played one or was involved in the design).
17. I'd heard anecdotal mentions of these Barefaced threads going a bit off the rails, but I'd never actually experienced one until now. Blimey.
18. They've recently retired a load of colour options. From memory the only colours available at the moment are sunburst, natural, white and two different blacks, although it's entirely possible I'm wrong on that.
19. I think the Temptations may have taken things a bit further than most. I heard an interview with them around Christmas and got the impression that there are no original members in the current line up and there hasn't been for a good few years. It's a kind of immortality in a way. The name of the group and the songs could pontentially live forever. Edit: Just checked their wiki page and apparently Otis Williams has been in from the beginning, although I'd swear in the interview I heard they said there were no original members performing on the current tour, so maybe he doesn't do all the live dates, or maybe I dreamt it.
20. I was a bit disappointed in the lack of brightness, I should really be a bit less susceptible to brand names by now. They weren't terrible but I was a lot happier when I restrung with hi beams.
21. I don't know about the records, but the videos usually had Tom Petty on bass. Not that it makes any difference to your observation.
22. On a passive jazz everything on full usually gives me the perfect sound. Actives generally require a lot more fiddling about.
23. Made the classic mistake of not zooming in on the bass player enough but other than that very impressive.
24. Is it one of those things that's actually really mundane once you understand the context & jargon?
