If I wasn't getting myself a fretless for Christmas, I suspect my first fiver would be on it's way. This has to be one of the bargains of the year.
-
Another great one just popped up in Off Topic. Inguinal Hernia.
-
If you get some work done by Kev between now and January he'll put your name in the hat for the Christmas raffle. 3rd Prize: Set of strings. 2nd Prize: Free fret dress. 1st Prize: One night in Kevin.

There's a better place down the road, south of Kevin.
-
Apparently the shop is slightly raised above the rest of the street. There are three steps to Kevin.

I saw Tool at Glastonbury in 1994. My overriding memory is that Maynard moved like he had one foot nailed to the stage. He'd take a big step forwards or backwards with his right leg, but the left foot seemingly never shifted from the spot. Great gig though.

The Rap Thread (new title for an old thread).
Cato replied to Mykesbass's topic in General Discussion
This quite a nice parody of the UK Grime genre. If you find it nonsensical and riduculous then you're getting the joke. Though I quite like it in it's own right. -
There are sometimes bargains to found after the NAMM music show in late January. NAMM tends to be when the big manufacturers unveil their new models and at the same time announce which lines are being replaced and upgraded. A couple of years ago the Fender USA Deluxe line was replaced by the Americal Elite line, immediately after that Deluxes were being sold at £500 discounts. This year it was the Yamaha BBs, although that was announced at Summer NAMM in June. The 424/5s and 1024/5s were discontinued and the old stock was on sale for approaching half price.

My local guy charges £100 for a full set up. For that you get the works, action, intonation, truss rod, frets filed and levelled if it needs it. If you want the strings changed you have to provide him with the new set yourself and he'll adjust the set up for those strings. I've only ever used his services a couple of times, both times with new (to me) basses that I though could benefit from the full treatment. Both times I considered it money well spent.

Not feeling the funk with a Les Paul style guitar - why?
Cato replied to darkandrew's topic in Guitars
It may not be that Les Paul style guitars are 'bad' for funk, rather that telecasters are perfect for it. -
I've often seen people on here refer to Wals as having 'Boat Paddle' headstocks. I'm surw some kind BC member will happily lend you theirs if it will help you navigate your photo shoot.

Like pretty much all modern production basses the various parts (bodies, necks, pickguards, electronics etc) were fabricated separately before the whole bass was assembled on a factory line system. It's entirely possible that a body and neck that were crafted in mid or late 82 could end up being assembled with a pickguard that was made in 83. Or it may not be the original guard, no way of knowing really.

Well we were right about the prices... Also it cracks me up that the heavy relic strat is described as being in 'mint condition'.

Your favourite rock and jazz albums of all time?
Cato replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
Like every else I don't really do all time favourites, but these are up there. Tower Of Power- Back To Oakland: This ones a playlist of the full album. -
You could try rehearsing through a 30 watt no brand transistor amp while the guitarist plays through a 50 watt Marshall and you attempt to make up the shortfall in volume by hitting the strings like you hate them. That's what did for most of mine
-
Youve missed one of the bass players coming of age rituals, the comedy 'flobbadobbadobba' sound you get after the core breaks and the windings unwind and rapidly lose tension.
-
I got through them when I first started, I reckon I'd be well in to double figures. I had a very vigorous pick technique before I switched to fingerstyle. It must be close to 25 years since I broke the last one though
-
The A or D would probably mess up my technique the most, but losing the E would be detrimental to the whole band. I might just about be able transpose E-G# up an octave on the fly but it would cost the overall sound a lot of it's low end.

What sort of pro guitarist doesn't have spare strings?
Cato replied to leschirons's topic in General Discussion
If it wasn't one of those magic teles he has no excuse. -
What sort of pro guitarist doesn't have spare strings?
Cato replied to leschirons's topic in General Discussion
What guitar was he playing? I watched a youtube vid last night where a guy claimed it was virtually impossible to break a string on a Telecaster. Maybe your guy saw the same vid and actually believed that nonsense. -
Some nice bits and pieces, but it's going to be collectors prices. I imagine even the Jack Cassady will be out of most people's reach, let alone the Ricks. That Mosrite is a collectors piece in its own right, even without the Stone Roses association.

Who would you - most have enjoyed playing bass with?
Cato replied to KiOgon's topic in General Discussion
I'd love to have played with the Funk Brothers in their prime, although I suspect they'd be begging Jamerson to come back after the first half hour. -
I really wasn't keen on the aesthetics of these when they first came out, but they've really grown on me. Lovely colour on that one too.
-
He needs to get that bass refinished, it's in a right state.

Precision deluxe specials have a jazz profile neck. I'm very happy with my 2016, but the deluxe special has been in production, with various electronic specs since the 80s. If you keep an eye out you could probably pick up a worn in earlier model for a very reasonable price. Edit. Ah, I see OBBM has already mentioned them.
