A grand seems like a lot of money for a bass CNCed in the far east, although I noticed the other day that the top end Sire Marcus Miller's are heading in that direction. Maybe it's just a sign of the times, but a couple of years ago you could get a part custom built Maruscyck for that kind of cash.

Electro shock therapy. Every time he loses his rhythm hit him with the cattle prod. He'll soon learn.
Have you seen those Scottish ones with the ginger hair sewn in like Russ Abbott wore?
You mean the ones Scotland fans used to wear to World Cup matches? No, I've not seen anyone wear one of those for years...
I had no idea silk colour bothered people.
It doesn't bother me as such, but, thinking about itfor the first time, I think I also prefer strings with no silks.

Sounds like you know pretty much exactly what you want, but are just unsure which brand to go with. Bass Direct have a pretty impressive selection. http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Preamps_onboard.html Try dropping them an email to see if they've got any suggestions. If I was upgrading I'd probably go for the Aguilar OBP3,because I love their amps, they also do an external preamp/DI stomp box based on the same tech. I don't think it comes with an active/passive switch but if you get a tech to install it, they should be able to sort that out for you

Help me Basschat people, you're my only hope...

Perhaps you're looking at the wrong end of the chain? It might be worth trying out a few amps/cabs/combos with your current bass if you can, maybe you can find a sound you like more. -
That's the biggest saxophone I've seen in my life. Nice vid though.
Sounds to me like there's an interesting story behind that if you're up for sharing in terms of getting you out of a rut, if you're up for sharing.
I think it's a pretty common story. I'd reached a plateau in my progress, I just found myself playing the same old stuff and I was getting frustrated with my lack of progress. Learning to slap opened up a different, more percussive mind set which actually crossed over in to all the other areas of my playing and refired my enthusiasm for the instrument.

Love a bit of slap. Learning how to play it really helped me get out of the rut I was in at the time as well.

Godin A5 Ultra fretless - anyone got one? Anyone tried one?
I had a fretted one, I expect this will go up in price nearer the cut! It was substantially made and weighs just under around 10.5 pounds. Not sure it has a metal sub-frame mind?
I think I probably confused it withe Godin Acousticaster which apparently has internal metal tines. http://www.musicradar.com/reviews/guitars/godin-acousticaster-40th-anniversary-koa-597549 -
I tried one at Bassgear a few years back and found it surprisingly heavy, considering it is a thinline electro-acoustic.
I seem to remember a magazine review from the 90s that said that they had some sort of metal lattice inside the body to improve resonance, that might account for the weight? Although I might have dreamt that. -
Just downloaded a couple of albums cheers, that's my evening listening sorted.
If you go to the Hare & Hounds, it's on Kings Heath high street, so plenty of pubs and restaurants to choose from. Alternatively if you go to the Custard Factory, you have to go to the Digbeth Dining Club, which is a great night out (http://digbethdiningclub.com).
I quite regularly go to gigs at the Institute in Digbeth and I wasn't aware of the Digbeth dining club. I'll definitely be having a look at that the next time I'm there on the weekend, so cheers for the heads up.
Thanks, Cato. Any particular model of Sennheiser headphones that you would recommend?
I use HD201s, but I think they've been discontinued and I'm not sure what the replacement model is. Edit. Just checked and Amazon are still selling the 201s, although the HD206s for £24 might be a better deal.

Difficult to go wrong with the the B1on and a 20 quid pair of senheisser headphones.

Currently I have three four strings. I'm hopefully adding a 4 string fretless in December or January. At some vague point in the future I'll almost certainly get a 6 string bass, but that may require some saving up.

There's this catchily named Ibanez. https://www.thomann.de/gb/ibanez_gsr200bf_wnf.htm?sid=175f613757b09444cc2bbde90156599a There's also the Sire v7 at around the £400-£500 mark, prices vary quite a bit depending on which one of the mind boggling selection of finishes you fancy. https://www.thomann.de/gb/search_dir.html?bf=&sw=V7+fretless
I was thinking the other day how cool it'd be if you were actually Louis Cato. You've shattered the illusion
Disappointing people is my superpower.

Depending on who's doing what I tend to gravitate to build diaries. It's the Basschat eqivalent of 'slow TV'. Despite having no practical skills of my own it's incredibly satisfying watching master craftsmen start with a few bits of wood then, over a period of weeks or months, turn out an incredible instrument. -
My natural VM70s Natural Jazz has similar mods and comes in at bob on 9lbs.

Following on from the recent Hi Beams deal, Amazon have just alerted me to these. https://www.amazon.co.uk/DR-Strings-FB-45-Fat-Beams-Medium/dp/B009P6D4TO/ref=pd_lutyp_simh_1_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B009P6D4TO&pd_rd_r=44BZCTDH1GA66ZTTTTNX&pd_rd_w=YjPdg&pd_rd_wg=sBcuu&psc=1&refRID=44BZCTDH1GA66ZTTTTNX £17ish delivered Buyer beware, I can't guarantee that they are genuine, although the hi beams were. I'm going to give them a punt.

To me Jaco's best stuff was his work with Joni Mitchell. This being a case in point. http://youtu.be/OGkAOURhLdw Although I'm also very fond of this, with it's more conventional groove. http://youtu.be/PE6HmArln_k
What is double thumbing????! Cheers!
http://youtu.be/5Q-XdZWgZzM If you've just started don't worry about double thumbing. It's one of the trickiest techniques to master and comes with it's own little world of pain.

Kenny Young and the Eggplants. It's not something I'd normally listen to but it makes me smile. http://youtu.be/lwV1ktzKB2I
