1. Just downloaded a couple of albums cheers, that's my evening listening sorted.
  2.
If you go to the Hare & Hounds, it's on Kings Heath high street, so plenty of pubs and restaurants to choose from. Alternatively if you go to the Custard Factory, you have to go to the Digbeth Dining Club, which is a great night out (http://digbethdiningclub.com).
I quite regularly go to gigs at the Institute in Digbeth and I wasn't aware of the Digbeth dining club. I'll definitely be having a look at that the next time I'm there on the weekend, so cheers for the heads up.
  3.
Thanks, Cato. Any particular model of Sennheiser headphones that you would recommend?
I use HD201s, but I think they've been discontinued and I'm not sure what the replacement model is. Edit. Just checked and Amazon are still selling the 201s, although the HD206s for £24 might be a better deal.
  4. Difficult to go wrong with the the B1on and a 20 quid pair of senheisser headphones.
  5. Currently I have three four strings. I'm hopefully adding a 4 string fretless in December or January. At some vague point in the future I'll almost certainly get a 6 string bass, but that may require some saving up.
  6. There's this catchily named Ibanez. https://www.thomann.de/gb/ibanez_gsr200bf_wnf.htm?sid=175f613757b09444cc2bbde90156599a There's also the Sire v7 at around the £400-£500 mark, prices vary quite a bit depending on which one of the mind boggling selection of finishes you fancy. https://www.thomann.de/gb/search_dir.html?bf=&sw=V7+fretless
  7.
I was thinking the other day how cool it'd be if you were actually Louis Cato. You've shattered the illusion
Disappointing people is my superpower.
  8. Depending on who's doing what I tend to gravitate to build diaries. It's the Basschat eqivalent of 'slow TV'. Despite having no practical skills of my own it's incredibly satisfying watching master craftsmen start with a few bits of wood then, over a period of weeks or months, turn out an incredible instrument.

My natural VM70s Natural Jazz has similar mods and comes in at bob on 9lbs.
  10. Following on from the recent Hi Beams deal, Amazon have just alerted me to these. https://www.amazon.co.uk/DR-Strings-FB-45-Fat-Beams-Medium/dp/B009P6D4TO/ref=pd_lutyp_simh_1_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B009P6D4TO&pd_rd_r=44BZCTDH1GA66ZTTTTNX&pd_rd_w=YjPdg&pd_rd_wg=sBcuu&psc=1&refRID=44BZCTDH1GA66ZTTTTNX £17ish delivered Buyer beware, I can't guarantee that they are genuine, although the hi beams were. I'm going to give them a punt.
  11. To me Jaco's best stuff was his work with Joni Mitchell. This being a case in point. http://youtu.be/OGkAOURhLdw Although I'm also very fond of this, with it's more conventional groove. http://youtu.be/PE6HmArln_k
  12.
What is double thumbing????! Cheers!
http://youtu.be/5Q-XdZWgZzM If you've just started don't worry about double thumbing. It's one of the trickiest techniques to master and comes with it's own little world of pain.
  13. Kenny Young and the Eggplants. It's not something I'd normally listen to but it makes me smile. http://youtu.be/lwV1ktzKB2I
  14. I named myself after my cat who is named after a late Roman Republic senator. It was a spur of the moment thing, I needed something I could remember. I didn't think I'd end up being such a frequent visitor to this site. I never use my real name on the internet, it makes it that much harder for the angry mob to track me down.
  15.
Wow! This is an interesting read. Personally after listening to them i thought the Beatles were overrated. Admittedly i was only a little boy when John Lennon was shot so missed all the hype and their rise in popularity but i've listened to some of their songs and they never really did anything for me.
Better hope Blue's not reading this thread. I know what you mean though, I think it's an age thing. I'm only 42 so to me Beatlemania is just a few black and white clips of a band rendered barely audible by screaming fans. My theory is that the Beatles were so influential that to anyone who wasn't there at the time they just don't sound that innovative. Their sound and song writing structure have been copied so much since that the original material loses much of it's impact with younger generations. I certainly wouldn't describe them as over rated though. They changed the direction of popular music, it just gets harder to hear that the further we move from the event.
  16.
KiOgon
That's the man. Not only are they a quality item, but the solderless connectors he uses mean that a complete idiot can fit them. I speak from experience.
  17.
Here's an interesting challenge - can anyone name a band that all of basschat will agree are NOT overrated? S.P.
I'd suggest Tower of Power and also Snarky Puppy. Even if ypu don't like the music, the level of musicianship is undeniable.
  18. Pretty much every band I've felt strongly enough about to hate I've come around to liking, or at least apreciating, in the end. On the other hand, indifference lasts for ever.
  19.
Are these the real deal? Price seems too good to be true!
If they're not real, I can't tell the difference.
  20.
Just checking, these are standard scale?
Yep, 34"scale.
  21.
I recommend listening to a tune called Weird Part of the Night by Louis Cole, it combines everything that's great about Knower. There's jazz, funk, 80's / Prince, 90s techno and straight up pop music influences in there, all squished up and injected full of weirdness and humour. I'm on a phone so I can't post it but it's a tune.
This one? http://youtu.be/glgPZmSwC4M I think I like it, but I may just be dazzled by the trousers/dance moves combination.
  22.
I actually dislike everything I've heard from them previously.
Apparently it's only quite recently that they've started touring with a live band and that's funked things up quite a bit. The album version of 'overtime' is a lot more house/elctro than jazz/funk. (I'm well out of my depth assigning genres to this electronic stuff).
  23. Just finished listening to the latest album. They record as an electronic duo and the jazz influence is much less pronounced. The closest camparison I can come up with is LCD Sound System. Still very good though.
  24.
http://youtu.be/GnEmD17kYsE Sam is an absolute beast and this is so so good it makes me want to weep.
Funnily enough a friend of mine showed me this exact clip last Saturday. I was blown away. It reminds of Vulfpeck and some of their jam videos, but with a modern dance edge to the jazz funk.
  25. If you don't know the story behind 'Relax' it's worth looking up, it has to be up there with the longest, most complex recordings ever made. These days I suspect that Relax and possibly the whole album would be credited to 'Trevor Horn featuring Holly Johnson'. Edit. Nice clip about making Pleasuredome here. http://youtu.be/jDhiYdFjFVU Someone posted a much longer interview with Trevor Horn on here a while ago where he goes into a lot more detail, but I can't find that one.
