1. That's a stunner. It's also triggered my intermittent 'You should buy yourself that spikey bass you wanted when to were 14' GAS.
2. Mine arrived. Everything seems to be in order. Slightly relieved that everything seems to have been above board.
3. My cats the opposite. The moment I look at a stringed instrument it leaves the room. Everyone's a critic...
4. Have we had this yet? http://youtu.be/mSG4ONpSnqk Off Topic: Cricket bat bass:Check Keytar: Check Dodgy haircuts: Check Is this the most 80s video ever?
5. Yellow for me. Not sure about the tort pick guard with either though...
6.
Thanks for the heads up - thats me £90 worse off now :-)
If it turns out there's some sort of problem or mistake with these I'm going to get lynched, aren't I?
7. Hope everyone can see these and they're not just on offer to me https://www.amazon.co.uk/DR-Beam-Medium-Guitar-Strings/dp/B0009FJ1NS Even with postage they're at least a tenner cheaper than average.
8. Geezer Butler used to live a couple of doors down from one of my secondary school friends in Lapworth, a village/town a few miles from Birmingham. I say 'lived', I'm not sure he spent much time there. I never saw him, neither did my mate or his parents, but he definitely owned the house.
9. Beautiful The sound of a Ray with the look and feel of a Jazz? I don't see how you can really go wrong. I've been toying with the idea of asking Maruscyk to do something similar for me.
10.
People on BC seem to find humor in humping an invisible bear Blue
I still laugh when I read that post on the Famous Quotes thread.
11. As others have said tne context of the flag has changed. It probably isn't seen as a racist symbol over here yet, but the recent media focus on far right groups in the US probably means that it inevitably will be.
12.
Bloody hell, those guys at TB take things seriously
According to Talkbass terms & conditions of use all contributors must take themselves and everything else completely seriously at all times, a sense of humour will earn a reprimand and persistent 'larking about' will get you banned. Isn't that why we're all here?
13.
Actually, it's quite neat... There once was a man from Nantucket Who kept all his cash in a bucket. But his daughter, named Nan, Ran away with a man And as for the bucket, Nantucket
I'm strangely disappointed.
14.
There was a young man from Nantucket.... ...Oops! Wrong web site
Does anyone know the rest of that limerick? I've only ever heard the first line.
15. Just after that shot was taken he played a note and his head exploded.
16.
Just recorded this for you - pretty rough but you get an idea. The main groove is an octave down (so normal range) then there's some noodling over the top, plus some auto wah and distorted rhythms going on. Bit of a mess really In my defence I've only had it a few hours and I'm getting used to the frets being so small and the fact I can't hook my thumb over the top, so there are several bum notes! https://soundcloud.c...scocks/wingjam1 Cheers ped
Nice.
17. The internet is an excellent resource. But, some old school, advice, start trying to play along to your favourite songs. Don't worry too much about the actual basslines, start by trying to follow the chords and the rhythm , just playing root notes. In my (somewhat limited) experience, people give up on playing an instrument because they get bored doing endless scales and exercises. A bit of real world application is a lot more fun. The rest comes along the way.
18. http://youtu.be/y9l9nkfX-YI Miles Moseley 'Uprising'. It's less jazz than I was expecting and more Stax/Mowtown, possibly with a bit of Curtis Mayfield and Isaac Hayes mixed in. First class though. http://youtu.be/I1QNAMgQETY
19. Always to J bass. I even saw footage of Rob Trujillo playing one with Metallica the other day. So,in conclusion, from funk, to country to metal there's nothing a Jazz Bass can't do. Disclaimer: You can play any kind of music on any kind of bass. Edit: I should add, that in my opinion the Jazz bass is all about the neck profile. Some people love it, some people hate it and some people are indifferent. Is it any any easier to play? Possibly, but only if you happen to be in the demographic that prefers slimmer necks. You won't know until you try it.
20. Not shorscale but it might be worth looking for a Steinberger Spirit. It's just about the smallest bodied bass out there, pretty light too.
21. The only shortscale I've ever played was a friend's unmarked fretless a few months back. I have to admit that gave me a few problems. Must be easier with frets though.
22. Apart from anything else playing guitar is fun. I started off teaching myself guitar on a £20 nylon string student job, then I got my first bass. Most of my time in bands has been as a guitarist, even though a lot of the time I would rather have been on bass. A knowledge of chords is certainly useful when playing bass and, possibly controversially, I think a knowledge of bass theory, particularly walking lines, is useful when soloing on guitar.
23.
Amazing what passes for genius these days. Taking a vocal sample up two octaves so it sounds like cats screeching then adding some unimaginative rapping over the top seems to be the bar!
His early stuff was excellent. He used to be fairly normal and modest (for a rapper) but a few years back his mum died suddenly. That's when the weirdness started. I also blame him for developing the autotune/vocoder style which seems to be dominating popular music at the moment.
24. At last I can stop the shaking and the cold sweats.
25.
So, what are you saying, that bass break is done with some sort of backwards tracking? Is the whole bass line constructed that way or just that bit?
It's just the solo. The second part of the break is the first part played backwards.
