1. There's the Ibanez Mikro bass. https://www.gak.co.uk/en/ibanez-gsrm20-tr-mikro-bass-trans-red/128550?gclid=CjwKEAiAr4vBBRCG36e415-_l1wSJAAatjJZNPqJUgwhLONiSFz6N2SNAhy-iz97ryoRb7CZdaKLvhoC3Uzw_wcB It's 29ish inch scale though. From the description 'The Ibanez GSRM20-TR MiKro Bass is a great choice for people who are: a) Small b A child c) A small child.'
  2. I'm not a huge Floyd aficionado, but this is one of my favourite songs of all time. http://youtu.be/JZkERB6dU_Y

    Marleaux

That's the first non Telecaster or Les Paul shaped single cut that I've genuinely really liked the look of. Might buy a lottery ticket this weekend.
  4.
Bass as a melodic and lead instrument is as valid as virtually any other instrument. It's people's narrow-mindedness that's the problem. People have preconceived ideas of what an instrument should, and shouldn't do.
I absolutely agree with that. In the example I posted it's not the fact the bass is the lead that's the problem, it's the insipid elevator music nature of the piece, which, considering the calibre of the musicians involved, makes it my least favourite cover version ever.
  5. Bass as a lead/melodic instrument? Just because you can doesn't mean you should. http://youtu.be/7uLHrbKeHNU
  6.
Are Gibson really discontinuing them?
I think they already have, but it'll only be temporary. They often drop stuff from their bass range, then reintroduce the same model or something very similar a of couple years later. There's no Thunderbird (as far as I know) in the 2016 catalogue, but next year, who knows?
  7.
I wish everyone would stop the panic about Brexit. It is in Europe's interest as well as ours to do a good deal. Take the motor car industry for example. Mercedes Benz, BMW and VW have a vested interest in there being a good deal. VW in particular has more to loose than most. Not only are jobs in Germany under threat but also those at Seat in Spain and Skoda in the Czech Republic. As I understand it Volvo's biggest single market is the UK. That's Sweden as well. Apply the Dad's Army Principle. There are so many Private Frasers around saying "Wur doomed, doomed". But look, here's Corpral Jones; "Don't panic, don't panic. When you stuck you've got to show them the cold steel". In threatening a hard Brexit Theresa May might be seen as showing them the cold steel. When it comes down to it you know what Corpral Jones said about showing the cold steel. Indeed the pound dropping has actually benefited the UK economy. Our goods are now more competitive. Stop pinicing, that's what causes the problems.
So do you think the relatively large price rises in imported goods are strictly a temporary phenomenon, or that wages will quickly rise to match inflation so that in real terms we are not paying more? Personally, I'm probably a bit more Private Fraser in that respect.
  8. I think a lot of the prices we're seeing now are 'old' stock, ie. stuff that retailers got in before the pound crashed, I reckon things will get even more expensive as they buy in more stuff. As an example some stores are selling some Yamaha BB1024xises for £733 whilst others, at the same store, are listed at £810, both prices are a fair whack more than what they cost this time last year. The latest MiM deluxe precision is already way more than I would have considered paying a year ago.
  9.
I'd consider putting in on hold. Just my thoughts on it.
I've considered it, but if people are right about the pound finding it's natural level after being overvalued I think things will get worse before they get better. That and I'm really bad at delayed gratification.
  10. I'm looking to make, what is for me, a fairly major bass purchase in January. It seems like every day I'm watching the prices of the basses I'm considering creep up.
  11.
A couple of things spring to mind. Look backwards to some bands like Blondie and the Runaways. Cherry Bomb got a lot of coverage from the Guardians of the Galaxy film.
Cherry Bomb is a cracker. http://youtu.be/q9dvwVMsGn8 Edit. This version is from the recent Runaways biopic - I can-t find the original on YouTube.
  12.
The good: - It is fun to play with them
What more can you ask for?
  13. Thanks to this thread I've downloaded 'Safety Dance' and am enjoying playing along with it immensely.
  14. I believe it starts with an octave pedal/pitch shifter, after that it gets very complicated and very expensive very quickly (he splits his signal into high and low octaves and runs each one through a seperate pedal board leading to different rigs), but as a basic imitation an octave and a distortion unit should get you on the right track.
  15.
I hate Red House. . . even by Hendrix.
It's what I think of as an 'infinite Song' - it goes on for as long as the guitarist wants it to go on, which often seems like days.
  16.
And in turn, that Cliff song always makes me think of this rock n roll classic... http://youtu.be/0KCi1_BjyCc
That made me smile, I've not heard it before.
  17. It's probably been over 20 years since I've broken a strong while playing, but I used to get through them when I first started. I think it was a combination of an overly enthusiastic/aggressive pick style and hitting the strings really hard to try to increase the volume to make myself heard in a band situation through a 30 watt amp. Not broken one since I switched to fingers and started letting a decent amp take the strain.
  18. Only made number 15 in the UK but was massive in Europe. http://youtu.be/4mtfnfQoAco
  19. This is my personal favourite Cliff Track. Brings back warm memories of an 80s childhood. Classic video too. http://youtu.be/sn9mLnKmPco
  20. I've always had a secret hankering for something spikey like this, even though my metal days are long behind me. This one looks a bit classier than the standard black-on-black-with-black-binding & black skull and crossbones motif efforts you usually see. If I didn't have my eye on something a bit more practical I'd be sorely tempted.
  21.
Similarly, one may read a pertinent, appreciative, innocent post on any topic, and come across a sh*t post from another member which adds little to the sum of human knowledge. Funny places, forums; apparently frequented by some pretty bored folks.
I resemble that comment. On the subject of the Beatles, I've only been on the forum about 18 months & the subject does seem to have been covered in some depth and with some frequency, often rearing up unexpectedly in the middle of a seemingly unrelated thread and carrying on for many, many pages. Still, if people have forgotten the pain, trauma & angry recriminations of previous threads & want to do it again, so be it. But there'll be tears before bedtime I tell ya 😉.
  22.
http://youtu.be/6mvJAsFEmWM This could develop into a deeper discussion about how jazz went so far forwards and then took a time machine backwards to a time when players only played show tunes. I'll get my coat and my white flares and see you all next week.
Beautiful. There's an interesting article here https://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/oct/06/new-cool-kamasi-kendrick-gave-jazz-new-groove There's a section where a couple of players talk about how jazz stagnated for a while as the younger generation were reluctant to offend their older peers by accepting more modern Influences into their music. I'm very new at this Jazz thing but it seems to me that with artists like Snarky Puppy, Kamasi Washington & Robert Glasper the modern jazz scene is healthier & more progressive than it has been in years, and that's without counting all the Jazz/hip hop/dance music crossover stuff.
  23.
I think this record is superb. I'm not familiar with Keane,s stuff.
Sounds a lot like that. Not my thing, but in fairness the original 'Somewhere only we know' was about a million time better than that horrible Lilly Allen Christmas advert effort a few years ago.
  24. I knew she was a decent guitarist, at the start of her career she often played an acoustic live. Never seen her with a bass before though.
