1. Thanks for the feedback. All good stuff. To be honest, the body wood wasn't something I'd taken into account but I suppose it is quite an important factor.
2. I'm returning to the bass after a little hiatus playing geetar. Now a few years ago I used to have a gorgeous 3 band EQ Stingray which I foolishly sold to buy a telecaster. I'm now looking at getting another Ray and wondered what the consensus is out there regarding the 2 band vs the 3 band. Aside from the extra knob an a side mounted jack is there any real difference apart from the price? Depending on where you look a 3 band is up to 30-40% dearer. I know you get a hard case rather than a gig bag but it does seem a big difference. Are the components neck, tuners etc… the same or has there been some other cost cutting to keep the price down? All thoughts are welcome.
3. If i can add a couple to the mix; Kevin Miles (Gene) and the amazing Andy Rourke (Smiths)
4. Well it's now 2014. Any update?
5. Welcome on board Bastien.
6. Doh!! Pretty obvious really after glancing at your avatar. Are there any more photos available please?
7. By pure coincidence I was watching this very bass being played by this seller on YouTube before coming onto this site. It sounded amazing.
8. Hmm, priced in Euros. Whereabouts are you?
9. Genius. You can't see the headstock so it's okay.
10. I've seen them on every tour since Signals in '83. They are superb live. I do agree that the ticket prices are high but they've said in the past that they barely break even on European tours. However, for your money you do get to see three incredible musicians in the flesh playing for the best part of three hours. I do feel that as they are now 59-60 years old that they may start to slow things down a tad. I didn't know about Lerxst miming backing vocals though.
11.
I've just got back from the Bridgewater!
I was across the road in The Barton Arms on Sunday. Tis a small world indeed.
12. Manchester Bass Lounge!!!! In Worsley. I live in Worsley and never knew about this place. A definite visit is in order.
13. I've just posted a reply on another post relating the to the THR amp. They are amazing value for money.
14. I bought one of these a month or so ago and I cannot rate it highly enough. As a practice amp I really cannot see how anything can beat it in the price range. It's not going to complete with an über rig but that isn't what it's for. I play both bass and guitar and it has rendered my other amps redundant. Expect to see my bass amp for sale soon.
15. Greetings from a fellow Manc.
16. Chorley is just down the road. I'm considering selling my Euro Spector 4LX as it just isn't getting used. It's in great condition. It's a 2004 (I think). A good solid bit of woody goodness.
17. I'm not sure what Bert said but welcome on board.
18.
I'm taking passengers to Warwick castle Saturday and might give him visit, what's the parking like? I'm only in a small minibus (transit size) also is it a good place just browse without an appointment, I'm not after anything specific.
What a small world. I visited Warwick Castle too on Saturday but didn't spot any bass players. Got there mid afternoon, dodged the shower but enjoyed the trebuchet. I wonder how far it could throw a full drum kit?
19. Welcome on board. I've had a few great sessions at the Mill Ave Company in Tempe. Arizona is a truly beautiful part of the US.
20. I don't even remember seeing Music Ground there the other day. Maybe they've gone under or my Rose tinted glasses had fogged over? Thankfully the Denmark St trip was only half an hour out of an otherwise fun packed day. I'm familiar with all the Manchester shops and find their service on the whole okay, certainly better than what I experienced at the weekend. I can echo what others have said. What I saw was a raft of 'vintage' instruments, some of which looked like they'd been built with the lights off. Glad I've done it though. It was an experience I won't be repeating. Like I said at the beginning off the thread, send in the bulldozers.
21.
I don't know which is more depressing ... your experience today, or my complete lack of surprise at it.
I've read so much on this forum that I think I knew what was in store for me. It's something ticked off my list of things to do. What's really depressing is that these places are throwing away the opportunity to be something great. The whole place was tatty and dirty. No real effort has been made to entice you in to spend your hard earned money. There is also a level of belligerence among the staff in these places. They probably think they're cool. To me they came across as a dickheads and I had no desire to spend any time in their company.
22. After promising myself a visit for twenty plus years I eventually made it down there this afternoon. While my wife and whining seven year old patiently waited for me at one end of the street I meandered down up one end and back down the other. What a dump! Most of the stores resembled little more than guitar bric a brac shops. My disappointment was overwhelming. I noticed the Bass Cellar had gone out of business (or relocated? I dunno). This is a place clearly existing on it's reputation alone as there is nothing, absolutely nothing, that would ever draw me there again. Of the stores I went into, none of the staff impressed me in the slightest. One store, Wunjos, had staff that were clearly sharing a joke among themselves and were openly effing and blinding to each other. They just came across as gobby gobsh*tes who needed a good wash. Further up the road was Macari's. I strolled in and was immediately accosted by who I assume was the manager (middle aged, balding, round rimmed glasses). When I said I was just looking I got a stare of contempt from him. As I continued to browse a lad in his early 20s asked if he could try a telecaster on display. The conversation went thus; 'can I try out the tele?' 'are you in a position to buy it today?' 'I'd just like to play it first.' 'well unless you're going to buy it, I'd rather you didn't as we're very busy today' At this point we both looked around an otherwise deserted shop... No it certainly wasn't busy at his point. 'if you come back later in the week you might be able to try it. Thank you, goodbye' I muttered to the lad loud enough for the 'manager' to hear 'he's got an excellent sales technique' to which the lad replied 'yeah, he obviously thinks I'm some young scumbag'. Meanwhile the assistant behind the counter (30ish, rockerbilly haircut) continued smirking throughout. 'Well that's two grand I'm keeping in my arse pocket'. At that point I followed the lad out of the shop leaving the staff to congratulate each other on their business acumen. It really is no surprise that many prefer to shop on the Internet. There are far better shops outside of London and I know for one that I'll never return there. Didn't even bother going into Hanks. Send in the bulldozers.
23.
Managed to get to the sheffield gig myself last night, as my mate had a spare ticket (will be paying him back on a very slow drip i think!) Bloody 'ell it was loud!! Very boomy where i was, which was up on the side of the arena at the front (Geddy's side) but not too far up. like Kev said, you could only really hear Geddy properly when the others were backing off. He certainly was giving it a lot of the flamenco thing though; it's integral to his style these days I think.. One great thing about where I was seated was having a great viewpoint of Ged's multitasking. Very interesting watching him playing string lines on the pedals effortlessly with his foot whilst on the bass and singing. Interesting too to see the black and white jazz bass with pearl block inlays and binding on the fingerboard, as opposed to black. Anyone know if this is his old Moving Pictures jazz bass with a different neck on it?? Maybe it's just a different bass altogether... Anyway, the guys rocked as ever though and now I'm very excited about Birmingham!!!
I was at the Manchester gig and noticed on the screen that the black bass had a Fender custom shop logo on the back of the headstock roughly where his signature would be on the er... signature bass. I managed to film the entire first half of the set until my battery went flat. A truly amazing gig and the sixth time I've seen them.
24.
I think there are three very important words that you and others haven't noticed. for business sellers Which I think means that we, the great unwashed, are unaffected.
The thing to be aware of is how they determine who is a business seller. From my own experience I was considered a business seller because my turnover of a couple of grand buying and selling guitar magazines as a hobby meant that they reclassified my account. I don't own a company or have business I just had a hobby that was lucrative for a while due to the turnover. So be aware...
