you couldn't be further from the truth! they both started as the same company, but thats about the only resemblance they share nowadays! The circuitry and build quality are miles apart. in regards to dirty though, have you ever cranked a hiwatt chris? if i were you i'd keep an eye out for a roost / vintage hiwatt / soundcity 120 or even nab that simm watts head that keeps appearing on ebay and let me do it up for you ;>
+100 on the hiwatt or simms both glorious sounding amps although you will need to sit something in front of the simms to get a real dirty sound. For me the Matamp won for a few reasons not least of which is that the amp is custom built to get the sound and features you want I wonder what the resonse would have been from Orange if I had bought one of their amps and then gone back a fortnight later and said "actually the sound is a bit too dirty for me at higher volumes could you see if you can tweek it for me" This is exactly what happened with matamp and they told me to take the amp in the following day where it spent 4 or 5 hours on the bench being fine tuned by Hayden and Andrew I can't sing their praises enough to be honest... not the cheapest amps but worth every penny for the quality of product and service
Finbar, I agree with the tone with Glassjaw. I love their bass sound. If you want my opinion, after wondering around the world of dirty tube amps, the Orange AD200b Mk3 is perfect for when you need a good dirty sound at levels where you still can hear the drums and guitar! Plus, if you want to push it louder, it will give you all the volume you want. I never realised how loud a tube amp could be until I played around with it. At 1/3 master, 1/2 gain, its seriously loud with lots of volume left. The sheer low end 'heft' is insane. I suggest the Orange or a dirty Matamp. The problems with the Ampeg SVT CL is its weight, and the fact it has to be cranked a lot higher to give you real grit. I a/b'ed the Orange with the Ampeg CL and VR, and the Orange won hands down. Not only that, but the second hand market for Orange and Matamp is better, should you ever sell. Ampeg isnt as 'boutique' unless you get a vintage one. No doubt a Matamp voiced to be dirty would be the same.
A GT200 with 83's in it has got to be the ultimate dirty sound for my money... but then I am biased

I have just spoken to Matamp and seeing as Tayste_2000 pinched my last 2x12 I'm having another one made this time with Neo speakers but with a higher power rating so I will report back and let you know how it compares with the first one. I'm wanting a slightly less Hi Fi sound and more like the 4x10's which they assure me they can acheive. At this rate we will be able to have a matamp cab bash LOL
There's a right way to build light weight cabs, which when employed will vibrate less than heavy cabs while sounding better, and there's a wrong way. One guess which applies to the lightweights you tried.
As I said in my experience... limited though it is, the comparison was between a newly designed 2 x 12 that I had made as a one off by Matamp, a Markbass 1 x 15 and the Barefaced Compact. Whilst the Markbass and Barefaced were very good at what they did there seemed to be a point at which they struggled whereas the 2x12 just seemed to keep going, and also the Matamp didn't vibrate at all and was louder than the other two. My assessment was also backed up by another BCer who was there at the time. Just in case it makes any difference the amps used to test them were both all valve... a GT200 and a Simms Watts PA100 The above is not meant to be deragatory towards any of the manufacturers they are just the results I got

I have played through ultra-light medium weight and heavy cabs, in my experience the heavier quality made cabs * give the best sound and everything else seems to be a trade off for weight they all perform ok but when you get to LOUD levels the lightweights seem to loose the ability to punch the sound forward and in the case of the ultra lightweights seem to vibrate rather violently * I know there are heavyweight sh*te cabs too

200W all valve into 2 4x10s masses of headroom and clean tone playing in a five peice band with a fairly loud drummer who is always mic'd through the PA (I don't go through the PA anymore) I have to admit this is the first time in 3 years that I am completely happy with my tone / power... in fact I would go as far as GAS free

Encores (the last few numbers in your set, not the brand)
Monz replied to OldGit's topic in General Discussion
It's just part of the evening's games isn't it, we usually play about 24 songs through 2 sets plus 2 or 3 encores . We make them work for em, you know "we can't hear you" "are you sure you want another" "We have got to get the half eleven bus you know" Generally consists of upbeat sing along type numbers... Crazy little thing, Brown eyed girl, All or nothing... you know the type To me there is no problem with them as you account for them in the timings of your sets good time to get them to remember how good you were and that they had a real good night and the band played 3 encores for us -
Have a blast at a Matamp GT200 if you get the chance... in fac I am taking all my matamp gear down to the bass bash if you want to have a play

Low tension nickel roundwounds that don't buzz
Monz replied to Clarky's topic in Accessories and Misc
+1 also for the XL's I used them on my warwick... best of the bunch for my money (I used the 40's) -
Thanks for the comments guys and sorry for any matrimonial disharmony I may cause It is worth it though... I love just turning up at a gig and knowing that the tone is going to be there without all the EQ fiddling, I just stand it in the corner, set the volume for the soundcheck... job done

I understand you don't want a practice amp but I got a Roland bass cube the other week (30W version) and it's suprisingly capable, I understand they do a 100W version too. Give one a try as I use mine for most rehearsals other than the rock band. It has a line out on it, which is one of the reasons I got it... emergency back up
-
OK I'm fairly new to this bass game so likely to get gazumped by nearly all of you 58 for the 60's/70's/80's covers band 22 and counting for the rock band 15 and counting for the ska/reggae band These are numbers that I would be confident playing on stage tonight if I had to... Probably another 20 or so that I learned purely because I liked the bassline

A quick 2 hour rehearsal and dropped off with HUBRAD (Who is a very nice fellow with a very nice fretless Overwater.... drool) My laymans review of the compact to follow shortly
Well then i think thats that sorted... Now, money. I guess i won't be seeing much change from a couple of grand. I think a phone call is in order, but you lot have put me off... it sounds like an aging process.
I shouldn't get too excited about the 400 just yet if I were you... he won't sell anything until he knows it's bulletproof and the last time I spoke to Howard about it they were still trying different transformers. Besides how much volume do you bloody want lol, my 200 is capable of making my ears ring for 24 hours after a good rehearsal.

The Specials, Bad Manners or UB40 would have done me fine

Well done that man... They really look the mutts nuts those do
