  1. Hello hitchy. You'll get all the tips you need here. Don't ignore the elderly threads, they are a goldmine of good stuff.

I wouldn't worry about age, I returned to the fold after a 22 year absence at the age of 45 (I still think I'm 23 though).

  2. If you make a real hash of anything, give the guitarist a narrow eyed, menacing stare. Then roll your eyes at the punters as if to say 'why am I working with this amateur'. Used to work a treat for me, then again that was the eighties and my main achievement would have been arriving at the gig upright.

  3. First was a Kay Rickenbacker copy bought from Sounds Great in Heald Green not long after it opened. Guitarist persuaded me to put a new bridge on which was slightly too wide so I kept pulling the E and G strings off the edge of the neck.

Second was a Burns Flyte which to my shame I treated despicably. I'm hoping to dig out a picture of this for 'then' and 'now' photos on the show us what you look like thread.

I made such a mess of the Burns that it got swapped for an active Westone (don't know which one, would have been the cheapest available in 1983/4)

Never previously had more than one bass until I signed up here...now I have three and a despairing wife.

  4. I bought the same combo off Soundslive last week and all seems fine. Haven't taken it to rehearsals yet so I can't comment on it's performance anywhere near top whack.

I made the same mistake with the EQ and didn't realise it had to be switched on - the last combo I owned was a Wem Dominator, things were much simpler back then.

Wife and 9 year old son inquired as to why I hadn't read the manual first but what do they know.

  5. Thanks for the support - really quite touching. The bands hoping to start gigging in September - mainly to give me time to get up to speed. Will be in the market for a lightweight rig in the next few weeks. I'm already negotiating for a more 'retiring' back-up/replacement for the Thunderbird with another forum member.

  6. Nice to know ther are few returning bass refugees out there. A eye-popping change in the gear and the amount of it available. Seeing the lightweight amps and cabs was the biggest revelation. Also rehearsal rooms seem to be a lot cheaper and better equipped than I remember.

Now I've just got to get the hang of this forum malarkey

  7. Hello one and all

I've just started playing again after a gap of 22 years. Used to play in a pub rock/covers nand back in the mid-eighties. Gave up playing for various resons. Bought myself a Thunderbird copy in a mild fit of mid-life crisis a couple of years ago. Came out of "retirement" and started rehearsing with a band a couple of weeks ago.

Will need a shed load of advice on amps etc. as things have moved on somewhat since 1986. I had a WEM dominator (50 W, Valves) back then and for bigger gigs was lucky enough to be able to use Graham Gouldman's (10CC) backline. Haven't got a clue about it all now.
