I have just started (newbie) playing Double bass in a Bluegrass Band - using an Old 3/4 Bass - the fiddle player suggested that at lot of bluegrass players use 1/2 as they are now bowing and so don't need the size. Never having tried a half size - is there much difference in them in terms of the volume of output from the instrument? cheers Mick

I am just starting with Upright and have joined a bluegrass band. I went to a jam last night - and another upright players bass was almost twice as loud as mine and the strings were a lot more flexible and easier to play. The D and G looked different from the E and A strings. The D and G seemed like a nylon wrap and the E and A more of a metal wrap. She wasn't too sure what make they were - but i really want to get hold of a set I have seen the La Bella Supernil Double Bass Nylon Filament strings for sake and wondered if it might be them Any tips please Mick

Turns out they stopped making the unlined MIM jazz a few years ago anyway - so need a change in plans - thanks everyone for the advice

thanks all - i opted to get a new MIM Jazz unlined fretless - the chat helped a lot In terms of upgrading it - a lot of people talk about upgrading the pickups - any news welcome ta Mick

I think new Mexican Jazz is about £575 and an american is roughly twice the price - not having had a chance to do an A-B test - can anyone summarise the difference for me - ta Mick

Apologies in advance - but I am trying to get to grips with fender pricing (if it is possible). I have a fender Mexican jazz which i paid 300 for and a Geddy Lee Jazz which cost me 450 - they are great. I now fancy an unlined fretless. There is one on Ebay but at over twice the price I paid for these two - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-Jazz-fretless-bass-guitar-Has-To-Go-Asap-/301374636649?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item462b540269 Am i looking at it the wrong way in trying to take a rational approach to the pricing and market value of a fender? I don't want to overpay and then lose shedloads if I want to change the bass later Be gentle ..... Ta Mick

Any suggestions for a bass battery combo - that has magical combination of small size, low weight and long battery life? Ta Mick

I am sure you smart lot knew this already. But after my new Yamaha SLB fell over for the first time in a normal bass stand. I used a cut down cymbal stand to support it. It works a treat and is rock solid.

Just got myself a Yamaha slb100. I notice some people add a Fishman as well to the bass. What does it add in terms of sound enhamment Ta Mick

What the hell I will go for it ... In my days you never had Ipad with Tab apps. With such a powerful tool you can load and scan a basic bass line for pretty much most songs done at open nights. Wonderful tool that I used actively last night and eased my pain no end

I think the point about the open mic and jam nights being run my mates for mates is valid and true. But after ten years out of the 'the scene' I figured if I really want to get playing again with a vengeance then I need to Network and build up a robust Black book (or facebook as it is now) of contacts. IMHO these people are they key ones to socialise with and (wash my mouth out with soap) I need to become one of 'those mates'. Being a robust and gigging musician is no different to being a busy plumber, consultant or dog walker. At the end of the day who you know always trumps what you know. I came back to the dark side about a month ago and threw myself into the jam and open mike nights (and it was nerve wracking walking into a room of hip strangers) - it has reaped untold payback. And ten years on the miracle that beholds facebook is wonderful. It is so much easier now to create a functioning network with ease than it was when I first started. I will end now before use the phrase 'back in my time'. - but I have seen the future and it is open mike/jam nights and Facebook (and M&S jeans with elasticated waistband. Mick
