Never been to a show or a store, Chris? It's slappity slap everywhere. Try Dean Peer, as he is a different fretless player, a harmonic master user: But that mwah nasal tone is also the signature of fretless bass and what 99% of the players/listeners are waiting for. That said, I recorded an album with my now definitely over duet (as the guitarist with whom I played during 10 years sadly died last year) with both fretted and fretless basses (Leduc U-Basse fretted 6 and Leduc Masterpiece fretless 6), and afterwards people were telling me that I had a superb fretless tone on some tunes that were played with the fretted U-Basse, but it was also the idea... So reversed engineering here. 😉

So the guy never played a fretless, decided to have one built by the deliriously expensive Warwick Custom Shop AND, that's where it's totally weird, without anything (dots, lines, ...) to help him being accurate, because he also decided to trust his ears, which aren't the best ones, that said. But, he's honest (and quite sympathetic too) and says he can be out of tune sometimes ... well most of the time. And the interviewer is asking such stupid questions about the way to play fretless to a guy who obviously can't play fretless!?! Amazing!

This why we have dreams, some unaccomplished thoughts, otherwise life would be so boring. -
Funny, as when I wrote it, there's was Rickenbacker turning in my head...

€1100 EUR: Fender Precision Bass PB70-85, 1993, Japan, type B neck. NO TRADES! NON NEGOTIABLE PRICE ! Asking price including shipping fully insured with tracking number to your place in these European countries (ask for other countries) : Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France (excluding French overseas departments and territories), Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Monaco, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden : €1100 Euros (£975 GBP is an approximation and I will only accept payment in Euros) !!! Shipping to United Kingdom is, of course, possible, but with an extra customs fee (VAT + other taxes + courier fee), because U.K. is now outside EEC. In perfect working condition and in good condition with all the nicks of 30 years old bass (see photos for real condition). This is the best P-Bass I've ever owned in 40 years, but, hélas, I'm not a P-Bass guy... Here are the specifications : Body: light ash (probably swamp) Neck: bolt-on in 1 piece of very lightly flamed maple Fingerboard: beautiful rosewood Frets: 20 positions with absolutely no marks Headstock: 4 in line Pickups: 1 brand new Hepcat (best French vintage pickups maker) Precision Bass '62 (see invoice) Controls: volume (selected CTS), tone (selected CTS) with a Russian PIO capacitor and a PureTone output jack (see invoice) Tuners: original Fender Japan Bridge: original Fender Japan (70's) Strings spacing at bridge: 19 mm Nut: bone Strings spacing at nut: 11 mm (nut width is a B type, so 41.275 mm) Knobs: Fender flat dome (brand new) Scale: 34 inches Hardware colour: chrome Truss rod: one, single action, 100% functional Finish: Dark British Green over Vintage White Country of origin: Japan Serial number: N079873 Year: 1993 Weight: 4.120 kg (naked) Action : from 1.5 mm under the G string to 2 mm under the E string at 12th position (can even go lower, but was perfect for me) Will be delivered in a Fender shotgun type (see photos). Non-smoking environment as usual. The cavities have been fully shielded with conductive paint (and some copper too), the scratchplate (or pickguard for some) has been fully shielded with aluminium and the bass has been set up professionally, which means it's super easy to play and dead silent. It is fitted with a set of broken in La Bella 760FS Deep Talking Stainless Steel Flat Wound (45 - 65 - 85 - 105), which really serve this bass. It comes with the thumb rest and the two ashtrays. The bridge cover has the foam inside cut to fit à la Nordymute, so not pushing on the strings, but going "around" them: true Motown sound guaranteed. What you see is what you get ! Look carefully at the photos taken from different angles and lights to see the real condition, which is good with all the nicks of 30 years old bass. Due to severe back problems (67% officially disabled because of it) plus right shoulder injury (non-operable capsulitis from which, after more than 4 years, I will never fully recover), I'm selling all my basses over 4 kilos and also the ones I'm not really using as well as some stuff I don't use. I've also considerably lowered the price for a quick sale. Don't hesitate to ask for more.

Yesterday, I bought this rig. An Ashdown CTM-100 head in pristine condition and a quite rare CL-414H cabinet. For those not familiar with Ashdown reference system CL-414H means it's a 4x10" cabinet with a 4 Ohms load, an adjustable horn and it can handle ... 1050 Watts. 🤦🏻♂️ The seller was an ex Ashdown reseller and still have plenty of Ashdown gear... I tried the 3 all valves heads he had there: a CTM-100, a CTM-300 (which was what I thought I was going to buy) and a BTA-300, alongside the 2 cabs I was interested in, the CL-414H and the CL-810 (which was what I thought I was going to buy). The 8x10" was quite nice sounding, but impossible to put in the car (stupid Peugeot 508 trunk and it could not be put on the rear seats too) and sounded a bit too much 8x10", if you know what I mean, so with loads of these muddy mids à la Ampeg and a shy low end, typical 8x10". The two CTM heads were very close soundwise, but I preferred the more useable 100 Watts power of the CTM-100 and also its lack of fan, even if this very fan is on the quiet side. The BTA-300 was a bit of disappointment as it sounded sterile and artificial with the active EQ, quite dull, in fact. It surely is great as a studio amp, but lacks a real valve sound signature to me. The CTM-100 and CL-414H was the best combination as it's responding fast with all the low end missing in the 8x10" which is normal as the 4x10" is a true bass reflex model. I tried everything with my Baldman-Fender Jaco fretless and it sounded excellent, really the way I want, with all the growl and mwah needed. I disengaged all the buttons, the gain was around 30%, bass were at 10 o'clock, mids at 15 o'clock, treble at noon and master from 10% to full on, ... which was way too loud. The funny thing is that I went there to buy the CTM-300 and the CL-810, and because of the stupid trunk of my car, I decided to try that CL-414H and what a revelation, even my wife said it was sounding better, rounder and more defined. It's not a great idea to buy such things with a broken back, but it will not move from the house as I wanted to have a full valves head or combo at hand. So this rig ticks all the boxes. A happy player.

Try concrete instead of wood as most of the deaf people around won't hear any difference between the sh*ttiest bass ever built and the most beautifully sounding one built with classical grade woods and true luthier skills with attention to every detail... And don't forget to put 25 pedals in the signal chain and, of course, these 25 pedals must include 12 distortion pedals turned to the max ... in cascade. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
