ok peeps Got myself a Warwick fretless, pics already up, its great but neck is a little weary, I think it hasn't has a decent clean or polish, strings seem to 'stick' into fretboard, but that could be cos they are Nickel/steel? Anyway can anyone give me best advice as to what to use to firstly clean the gunk off neck and then anything I can put on to make it as slippery as an eel. no point having a fretless if you can slide around like a snake.....

Is percy using a Wal on this album? Also I can hear some effects, subtle but they are in there! Any ideas what Percy used then? Cheers Z

yeah its funny I wasn't even looking for a Warwick, I have played a fretted on ages ago, sounded a bit dark for me but its a real quality instrument... like you say crafted..... I'm deffo keeping it.... and I like the fact that a funk master used to own it, no pressure on me then!! I got lucky, bought blind, took a punt.... the bass gods like me!! -
Very nice! Also I am super jealous of you for having owned a Wal, even in the past.
I got that very cheap, a guy I was in a band with worked in a music shop and one came in, He wanted my double bass and £400 I think!! I sold it for not a lot back then, and cursed myself ever since.... but got myself something as equally well built!!

zawinul replied to goonieman's topic in Bass Guitars
Back luck .... I just paid a small fortune for a german Warwick.... the only problem was a loose saddle screw, but I had to pay tons..... send it back and keep looking on here!!!! -

she's small but heavy...neck is a bit thick....but...sound is incredible very hi-fi, musical, cello like ...a real instrument finally to make up for my long lost Wal custom fretless I sold back in 94'...... and apparently once owned by one Stuart Zender, though yet to be verified!!

zawinul replied to zawinul's topic in Bass Guitars
I just got almost the exactly the same bass a stremer mark II, lined fretless, bubibga ..same high price!! But I was tired of waiting ..With fretless just not the availability. ... it arrived yesterday. Its heavy, the sustain is laughable it goes on forever. .dark cello like tone...chunky neck not like my fender (squier) fretless, not sure what strings are on it..ill stick bright round wounds on I need twang!! Will still get acg at some point. -
er.... I've just gone and bought this!! Hope I like it!!!

Its bubinga, neck is wenge and bubibga, through neck, the sustain on it is ludicrous!! Very heavy, dense feel...the neck is a little thick for me, It probably could do with a little tlc and a proper set up but it feels like a proper instrument with a real character. ... -
er.... I've just gone and bought this!! Hope I like it!!!
zawinul replied to zawinul's topic in Bass Guitars
o my jesus god, its amazing...... the neck is a little chunky it'll take a bit of betting used to but i could always shave a bit off... The sound is glorious...its more like a cello than a bass... a wonderful warm mellow, even melancholy sort of sound.... very musical.... and it pretty good nick for a 25 year old bass!! -
Wow that looks great, almost makes me wish I had not just bought a Warwick fretless but maybe I'll just have to find the funds for an acg bass as well!! I can see a short scale headless fretless in my mind...

Yeah could you ask him, apparently it was bought in 1990 brand new by Stuart and signed in 06, maybe he gave it to someone? Just waiting for it to arrive.... ;-) -
Second hand bass 1990 instrument in great condition fully cleaned and set up with a new set of strings, and comes with a hard case. A rare hand built early example and considered to be the best examples with slim/fast wenge necks, Schaller tuners, EMG pickups and brass adjust- a-nut. The bass was owned from new by Stuart Zender and has his signature inside the battery compartment lid. not sure if it was owned by Stuart or not, but signed anyway!! will i like it?
I recently bought a Spector Spectorcore 5 string fretless for under £500 from www.webmusicshop.it which was delivered from Italy to SouthernEngland in 4 days! Fantastic service and over £300 cheaper than stores in the UK. I've owned Fender, Ibanez & Washburn fretless basses and this knocks spots off all of them. Terrific build quality, lovely figured maple top and with the added bonus of a Fishman under saddle pick up in the bridge which offers a very different tone palate. I can't praise it highly enough. The 4 string version would probably cost you under £400 with the Euro being down as it is at present.
whats it like to play is it fast, low action? Is it twangy? really looking for fretless that isnt muddy, can't see to find many demo;s of it anywhere!! ? Whats postage from italy, cheers? Z
BassDirect tend to be at the highest end of the market but find somewhere else as well stocked in Europe. If it had been there 6 months they might take a drop but not so soon.
its been sold, or taken dow from Bass direct, where are good bass chops in Europe? -

A thin necked, 4 string, active, fretless with lines, lightweight, not muddy sounding, that sings, ebony fretboard for roundwounds only, very trebly sound, pre-amp, and YES before you all say it: ACG!!!! unless something else is available, there is always Mayones, Shuker, Sandberg, Status, even Marcusyzxkzx (can't spell it) .....but it a lot of dosh for a completely non gigging non musician!!!
Good era for Warwicks if you like the neck profile from that time of course. £1500 is very top end, as wArwickhunt said- anyone would be lucky to sell one for that, but it's retail so maybe that evens the price out. Unless you know you like them is suggest you try a few Warwicks from different eras to get a feel for them. It may take a while to find 2 from the same era to compare as they aren't the most common! My Stage 1 custom shop is anything but twangy, it has a 'Warwick' sound and harmonics everywhere.
I think you have to try a bass out before buying... they all differ so much... I live on south coast very few shops and virtually no fretless's!! I'll end up buying blind I know it I do have a Warwick a Bootsy Colllins artist series Korean... got it for a steal at Thomann, orange disco stars!! Its great, needs the frets ground a bit, and a proper set up but a lovely twangy sound.... probably unlike typical Warwick, I remember a friend of mind had one and it was very woody, nice, but I want twang, whatever that actually is!!
