1. Wikipedia is your friend:
Branson wanted vocals on one of the albums, whereas Oldfield had no intentions of doing so. Oldfield said himself in an interview that he angrily stormed out of Branson's office yelling "You want lyrics!? I'll give you lyrics!". He then drank half a bottle of Jameson's whiskey and demanded the engineer to take him to the studio where, intoxicated, he "screamed his brains out for 10 minutes".

When you first started playing did you realise the body was made out of wood?
No. Because I was 4 years old, it was one of these and it was made out of plastic. Probably from recycled Maccaferris: NB: Tuner placement requires semi-reverse post-winding technique

 5. That is mighty impressive. Have a very happy weekend / day.
 6. I've encountered viruses on Bassmasta. Best avoided, IMO.
 7.
I bought the same combo off Soundslive last week and all seems fine.
... and I subsequently bought it off Deaver. A perfectly nice little combo, now stuck on top of a 4x10 and sounding adequately chunky. EQ on / off switch muddled me too.
 8.
Anyone care to guess what a 'resinator fretboard for ease of playing' means?
The fretboard's made out of moulded resin, rather than wood. I s'pose they called it 'resinator' as a waffy advertisingthing that implies all sorts of exotic sonic promise without actually delivering. I'd like one of these: A National Newport 84
 9. How about the easiest riff in the world? I played Gimme Some Loving wrong for years and years. Then, one day the realisation struck me The shame....
 10. ...and there's the guitarist who threw some great axe hero poses but kept discarding most of our song suggestions. I noticed that the ones he accepted were all in the key of A. Taxed about this, he admitted he wasn't happy in any other key. So I offered to show him the lick in C: Me: "You start with a C on the A string" G: "Which one's that? I don't know what the notes are on the fingerboard. I'm a 'feel player', me" Me: "OK, start with the 3rd fret here on the A string." G: "You prat. Basses and guitars are tuned differently. Everyone knows that." We eventually fired him by phone. "Good job you didn't tell me on Tuesday night. I'd have punched you out" he said.
 11. Bought a pedal board from Alfie. Excellent value, great comms and he even dropped it off while he was in the neighbourhood. A thoroughly good chap!
 12. Remarkable consensus so far: Precision

slightly clankier and less focussed sound but with a bit more bottom end
big traditional boots
a full rich tone with great presence
a 'fruity' richness
rough, dirty, solid
very 'direct' and 'mellow'
thick, heavy on the fundamental
Precisions explode
that (Precision) wallop.
Guinness - rich and full bodied
Precisions go thumpity thump
P's kinda go VVVvvvvvv
A P goes 'Womp!"
Jazz

slightly more refined particularly in the mids
big traditional shoes
far more middy
an edgy rasp
Neck pup jazz = smooth, clean, hollow
the J has the ability to 'spread' it's tone.
Jazz's sparkle
lager & lime - cuts through nicely
Jazzes go plinky-plunk
J's kinda go Dnggggggg
A Jazz goes 'Wooomp"
13.
The proposal is to limit access to a forum that was created for the purpose of discussing Ebay links, not advertising them. I guess that hasn't really been made explicitly clear but it was the understanding behind the initial creation of the forum (which was in response to popular requests IIRC)
Thanks for the reply, Kiwi. Oops! I think I've probably misinterpreted the general thrust here for which my apologies. Not knowing the back story, I mistakenly thought the forum had been set up not only to discuss ebay stuff but also to promote members listings. Clearly, if it's about restoring it to its original discussional purpose then the proposal is entirely sound in this respect . I shall shut up now. Cheers, P.
 14. FYI Admin-posted discussion on implementing a '50 posts on BC' threshold before you can post here in Ebay links: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=118191&st=0
 15. Don't do it Is the volume of one-off's really worth worrying about? In fact, a block is counter-productive, IMHO. Here's why: * Blocks off people who might turn into useful contributors. What's wrong with people who initially join to sell? Of course their first post is going to be "Here's my X for sale". Lots of us here did just that and stuck around. * Discriminates against long-term 'readers not posters' * Links will turn up in 'for sale' anyhow * If we say there's a min of 50 posts, what sort of post should they be - and where? If OT doesn't count, then they're going to clog up the 'useful' forums with all sorts of guff to reach their threshold. So, instead of one offending post, you've got 50. That's the same as allowing 50 one-off's. Basically, let them get in and get out - clean and fast.

 17.
A case for clearer guidelines and more training for their staff perhaps?
If all else fails they should ask themselves:
 18.
If the licensing model is based on the broadcasters paying to transmit stuff to the entire listening public then it's clearly unreasonable (or anomalous at best) to double-charge a portion of that listening public just because they happen to be listening to the broadcast at their workplace.
The point is that the listening public is not double-charged by the PRS. The listening public is not charged at all by the PRS whether at their desk or in the comfort of their bijou suburban living room. Hence there is no anomaly. Who gets charged? 1. The broadcaster. This is for the benefit of using the music to build an audience. Of course, record companies could pay the broadcasters. That would be payola and has been illegal for some time. Doesn't stop them dropping off some Charlie now and then; occasional agreeable trip to the W.Indies with some nice lady mod-ells. 2. The employer / retailer, etc. This is for the benefit of promoting a cheerful (if slightly irritating) perkiness among their workforce. "No worries! Have a nice day! No problem!" And to soften up their gullible customers so they more readily part with their scratch. So nobody is being double-charged. Two separate commercial entities are each being charged once for the (differing) benefits they derive from the musical performance. The only double-charging anomaly I can think of would be if PRS charged a radio station both for playing the records and for piping their on-air output through the office / reception area. At one time I probably used to know whether they do this or not, but it's too long ago and I don't care anymore. And, afaics, no-one's proposed a detailed, workable alternative yet to the PRS. Mind you, it's the debate that counts.
 19. I've been having a good long think about this. Over the last thirty years, I've been in quite a lot of guitar / bass shops. And I can only think of three where my visits have been consistently satisfying. The good ones were Music Mart in Canterbury (dec'd afaik), Musical Exchanges in Birmingham in the 80's (def dec'd) and Peter Cook's in Hanwell (though I did once watch them sell a Marshall TSL full stack to a 12 yr old newbie and his Dad). By comparison to the sh**tiest of the sh*tt*rmost, The Bass Cellar is actually quite good. My sole visit to the Bass Gallery was shrouded by serious inebriation on my part, so I cannot comment with any accuracy.
 20.
Daily Mail: Assistant manager of the store Dale Alexander said they had been contacted by the Performing Right Society to say their business could be fined if they were caught listening to a radio without a licence, so Sandra decided to entertain the staff and customers instead. The Sun: Sandra Burt started serenading customers after the Performing Rights Society warned her bosses they would have to pay an annual fee of £80 to keep the grocery store radio on. But despite shoppers loving the 56-year-old's music, she was told she must pay live performance fees costing up to "four figures" or be hit with a huge fine.
Frankly, it's a bit silly to go after them for this. It's clearly not a performance as we know it, but I suppose it counts as a performance within the narrow confines of the law. But the PRS reversed its decision and sent her a box of chocs and a nice greetings card. So everybody's happy.
 21.
In fairness, Paul, they've moved things around a bit and it's much better these days.
Fair do's. I've not been in for a while. Strike the cramped comment
If someone told me he had 57 basses I'm not sure what my reply would be.
I'd have to ask if they'd ever worked with Heinz Whenever I'm sad, whenever I'm blue Whenever my troubles are heavy Beneath the stars I play my guitar Just like Eddie
 22. My 2p. I like that vid and the line is entirely feasible for a covers band. It grooves nicely. In the unlikely event that audience members started booing, I'd follow the advice given some time ago in another thread by a certain poster in this one.
"If someone made the point that it isn't like that on the record, I'd offer to buy them the CD and they can f*** right off "
23. Never mind the shortcomings or otherwise of the Bass Cellar's salespeople. It's just too bloody cramped. Any more than 3 punters in the shop and it's like a complicated 18th century dance. How do you try out a rig while standing in a 2 foot wide gangway? Ghastly place.
